Do you think you're single because of the times or do you think you would be in the same position back then?

Personally for me, I think I would be married with kids by now if it were the 1950s or 1960s. It seemed to be a lot easier to meet people and people were much more willing to stick things out than they are now.

Maybe, but you also have to consider the fact that marriage during those times didn’t happen for love. It was during a time where women weren’t independent or very few were, most of them saw marriage as a need for financial stability, rather than something done out of free will and choice.

I know the dating scene seems bad right now, but maybe it’s because it’s new for a whole generation of women to be given that choice and not accept anything less than they deserve because they have to be financially dependent on a man for their survival.

More people wanted to get married. Today with a few exceptions the only guys who want to get married are the ones who think they can’t compete in the hookup lifestyle. And older guys who are ready to settle down. Like guys in their forties.

In those days, society was geared around getting married, buying a house, and starting a family.
If two people wanted to engage in sex, they often got married first. Or if a girl got pregnant, the guy would often do the right thing and marry her just so the child wouldn't be called a bastard.

Divorce wasn't as common. Divorce was viewed as a failure. I think people took marriage vows more seriously. For those reasons, and for the sake of children, a lot of people stuck their marriages out even if they weren't happy.

Things started to change when the pill became available and women didn't have to worry about getting knocked up if they had sex.

I was 16 in 1970. Women's lib and sexual liberation was taking off. Girls still dreamed of getting married, having kids, and living happily ever after. Just like girls in earlier days, they could have boyfriends in their teens but, unlike earlier days, they could have sex with their boyfriends without worrying about getting pregnant and having to get married in high school.

So, by 1970, things were a lot like they are today, except hookup culture wasn't popular. Girls who made the rounds were considered skanks and nobody wanted one for their actual girlfriend. Yes, there were girls who slept around, and they got reputations for being easy.

Openly gold digging wasn't a thing. Guys tended to go for "girl-next-door" types. I didn't see any women who were painted up, wearing expensive clothes, and stalking guys for money. Although, I suppose most girls did hope to become housewives and be supported by their husbands like their moms and previous generations.

Because this was pre-porn and few girls had experience with lots of partners, dick size wasn't a criteria in choosing a boyfriend. They just wanted the cutest guy they could get.

Sex symbols in movies didn't display defined abs or bulging muscles. Think about the Superman TV series or the beach party/surf movies or the '50s and'60s. Only body builders like Steve Reeves, who starred in sword and sandal B movies, looked like The Hulk. The role models were teen idols, wholesome young men and father figures. So girls were looking for fit guys but not necessarily sculpted gym bods.

There was no social media and there were no dating sites., so girls couldn't search for the world's hottest, richest, most ideal partners. They had rely upon chance meetings, which meant that they had to be sociable.

There wasn't a focus on extreme wealth. Girls just wanted a guy who loved them, was motivated, competent, and could provide for a family.

There was no radical feminism or #MeToo movement. Girls were attracted to men and knew how to navigate the world of compliments, pick up lines, cat calls and even pats on the ass.

A lot of girls had been in several relationships before they found a partner to marry. There wasn't a stigma around that like there may have been in the 1950s and early '60s.

I'm married now. Of course I'd be married then. The birth control pill didn't even exist then and feminism hadn't taken hold so most women were marrying and starting families.

On line dating didn't exist, people lived in communities where most people knew each other so instead of looking at one picture and reading one paragraph of bio and deciding "nope, I don't want to date them", people actually kind of knew each other and knew personalities and people could "grow" on each other and start relationships.

The country was more unified to a degree too (even though they was turmoil over the Vietnam War) because it was mainly native born Americans white and black. The Dem led massive immigration programs from 3rd World Countries hadn't started yet to where Dearborn Michigan is all Muslim and there are Mosques and Muslim schools all over the country, Minnesota has entire regions of Somalis, huge chunks in this country cannot even speak English, you have Sikh's joining the USA military and then suing to change our dress code and standards because he wants a beard when we require clean shaven. His INDIA religion doesn't mesh with our country so our country is supposed to change to accommodate him.

You know the catch phrase they've been spouting for decades, "DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH".

Yeah, the 1950's USA. They didn't realize they needed 1,000 mosques and Islamic schools and huge neighborhoods of people that don't speak English and live and dress as if they are still in their 3rd world country, we needed to change our codes and standards for migrants who were nice enough to come over here and demand we change our culture and standards to accommodate them. Our job is to go to work to pay taxes to hand over to migrants who barge in and want housing, education and access to our healthcare while dressing like they still live in their old country, won't learn English and want to start up new religions in our country and schools of their foreign religion.

By the way, why do you think people would be single? It is the modern, promiscuous, tattooed, pierced generations of the last 30 years who abandoned marriage and became total promiscuous degenerates.

Do you mean if a modern thinking promiscuous, no kids person was just teleported to that time period would they change their ways to adapt to that time or keep their normal lifestyle? Without the pill they'd have to be celibate. Women didn't put out as much then they wanted marriage first. You weren't even alive in the 50's or 60's. How would you know what dating was like back then?
The US population was 166 million in 1955. That's about half what the population is in 2025 at 344 million. So half the potential partners spread out over the same huge 50 state area in smaller cities and towns. Fewer choices.
There was no internet and no dating apps and no social media and no pocket cameras.
You had to meet people the old school way. Face to face. Actually talk to someone. Holy shit that must be scary.
Your options were far more limited. People dated other people they met through family or friends or school, or work or bars and clubs. Again, far fewer choices. But vetted choices in a lot of cases who knew there were social consequences for bad behavior.
Wanna know what they look like. You have to meet them. No filters. No Photoshop. Just zits and awkwardness.

Today...

I think the damage to the dating pool has been done by unlimited choice delivered to your fingertips by the internet. 3,000 choices you can swipe left on all day long. Because the next one is always gonna be better.
But those profiles are half lies and the photos are all staged, filtered, and photoshopped. Or ROFL, 20 years old.
You're meeting someone who hasn't been filtered by your family, friends, workplace, or school.

I had my first kiss and I went with one boy for a month. I had two boys I went around with in the 60's. Romantic, no sex though. That probably wouldn't have happened if we had social media back then.

People were more "normal" back then. They had more morals and manners too.

I think it had to do with the ability to meet new people. If you lived in a small town you knew everyone they knew you nothing changed without people knowing so back then everything mattered more... now day you can ruin your reputation come back from it do it again and people see you as normal. In the 50s and 60s people couldn't make mistakes or it was more likely to follow them forever. Now days you can live in an apartment and never know all your neighbors 75 years ago that wasn't a thing because you didn't take for granted how special meeting a new person is. Still, if it were actually the 1950’s or 1960’s … it would be hard to say whether time period has any influence on the matter of being paired up.
