Why are abusive partners/spouses hypocrites?

For example in the movie Enough with Jennifer López, the character playing the abusive husband Mitch is a total hypocrite. He wants to continue cheating and expects his wife to accept but gets jealous when she leaves and is seeing a past ex boyfriend.

He breaks into her house with full intention of choking her to death saying "If I can't have you then no one can". Luckily she had a pepper spray. He's a stalker that even hires others to follow her.

However when she breaks into his new house with Krav Maga skills and slaps him a couple times, he wants to hurt her saying "It's not self-defense when you break into my house and attack me". Yet he was doing that before when she left and wanted him to stop, wanted to be left alone. Why are abusers hypocrite. They can do whatever they want but when their victim does it back, it's not ok.
