It's smart and admirable to be more careful about who you entrust with your feelings. Most people, FAR beyond the age that they should know better, choose partners for shallow, superficial reasons and don't vet them for their morals, values, and life goals, which almost always means the relationship is going to fail. You cannot change other people, and hoping you can change someone with bad morals and values because you are attracted to them is a guarantee of failure.

That said, life is short and, especially as a woman, your leverage on the dating market is massively front-loaded. Most of your dating market leverage comes from your youth. That's great while you still have youth, but once that's gone, it's kind of like going from a CEO position to a cashier job - it's a very difficult adjustment to make, especially for those who have grown up being lied to that this doesn't really happen. It does happen. A few extremely attractive women may have a little longer window of time, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

So, I definitely encourage you to take your potential relationship partners seriously, and especially to vet their morals, values, and life goals and make sure the two of you have long term compatibility, because you are wasting your time, and likely enduring emotional trauma, if you don't. But you should also have some urgency if you hope to have a life partner. You have lots of leverage now, but the clock is ticking and that leverage will expire. For most women, it expires around their 30th birthday. So, if having a serious lifelong relationship is your goal, you will have, by far, the best options and the most leverage before you turn 30.

That doesn't mean you can't find a relationship later, but it means that, to use a car-shopping metaphor, instead of looking at new cars, you will be shopping strictly on the used car section of the lot, because you won't qualify for anything on the new car lot. And the older you get, the less value and leverage you will have, and thus the lower quality cars you will be able to drive home.

Use your time wisely and set up the rest of your life for long-term success while you have the most value to spend, and are likely to get the best return.

Not everyone is operating from fear, urgency, or a “ticking clock.”

I'm 56 - I have no illusions of becoming a professional athlete or model or movie star or pop star, because those are things that require youth (among other things, but my lack of youth alone is enough to disqualify me). That doesn't mean I don't have useful advice for someone who is in their youth who wants to follow one of those paths.

Whether you like it or not (and I'm fully aware that many women don't like it at all), women have a window of time when they have significantly more value on the dating market, and a window when they have significantly less. So do men. The difference is that men know and accept this, and many women refuse to accept it and so they squander their dating value when they have it, and that's unfortunate. I'm telling her the truth so that she has a chance to maximize her outcomes while she can. You want to frame that as instilling fear, but I am simply explaining how to have the highest likelihood of success in the reality that we all find ourselves in.

Hmm... the stage I'm at right now isn't guarded. I'm the type that believes that if you want to find love, you have to be willing to dive right in without hesitation and give that person your all without any emotional walls up. You need to treat each new person as fresh, and not be affected by the trauma of a past relationship.

In my case, it's just a pure case of laziness. Putting the time and effort into getting to know someone new. It's draining and then they're usually not the kind of girl I want to be in. If there is one out there, then they'll show clear and genuine interest in a relationship, so I'm not second guessing myself or their intentions. i don't think it's extreme. like if you have trouble accepting something that you actually want, it seems you've spent so much time convincing yourself that you just can't have it that it broke yourself in a sense. i don't think it would be "extreme" at all to see a therapist about that. like that's not maturity. that is being stuck in coping mechanisms. it's healthy to manage expectations. but if the protection of your feeling leads to you having trouble accepting a good thing that you want, i see that as a problem. i don't see going to a therapist as a extreme thing for mentally ill people. same as just cause you go to the doctor doesn't mean you have terminal cancer. there's minor things too and this is a minor thing but i do think it's worth seeing a therapist about it.
