Religion is understood to be a system of beliefs and practices by which a group of people interpret and respond to what it regards as sacred and unusually supernatural. It is difficult to credit any one religion as being true when there have been many throughout human history. None appears to have any greater claim to being more credible or reliable than the other.
A lot of people find comfort in their religion and we understand that a great deal of reassurance can be found in believing that an all-knowing authority has preordained the course of our lives. We cast our troubles on our deity believing that we will be saved, we cast our sickness believing we will be cured and we live a life leading by example believing we will be blessed.
Religion and Morality.
Both are very difficult to define and the one interacts with and the other in all societies. In other words people's moral values are rooted in the prevailing or traditional religious beliefs. Religious beliefs and practices tend to differ from culture to culture. A person's religious core tends to be the major source of their sense of identity.
Morality has to do with the setting of boundaries in respect of the behavior of members of a community. Morals are particularly relevant for weaker or less powerful members of society. They are suppose to serve the purpose of restraining the behavior of those who are more powerful, in order that they do not enjoy unfair advantages over those who do not have the resources to defend themselves and their rights effectively.
Religious Concepts of Punishment and Reward.
It's like getting paid after a long day of work or running an extra mile knowing that the cold, delishous water awaits your arrival. It's the same where religion is concerned. You live a life of example, worship your deity and your reward is eternal life in the after world. You live a life disconcerting the way of life you have been taught and the punishment of burning in a forever hell awaits your arrival.
This forces people to live a life with moral and core values, selflessness, in order to receive the promise of eternal life promised. No one wants to be burned or be in the endless cycle of reincarnation for that matter.
Why the Belief in Religion is Non-existent in others.
It is quite disappointing in a sense when someone perserveres through hardship and then attributes their strength to a higher being instead of crediting themselves for their efforts. They don't want to spend their fleeting lives preparing for what may come when they die. Living without arbitrary restrictions without guilt, self-abasement or that another life awaits is liberating.
The restrictions that come along with religion can be a hardship. Living for the now can be difficult when you don't feel like you're living at all. Seeing is believing. Not everyone will take the word of an ever present spirit being beside them.
Knowing that you are responsible for your own actions and the consequences that follow, seems better than knowing you will be judged at some point in the after life for every misdemeanor. We are all different cultures, point of views and beliefs. We can't all stand for the same thing. That would be bland and boring. Expected and lacking. There are quite a few religions, each different from the other yet similar in a way or two. Similar not identical.
