Surely knowledge is a good thing. Why would any parent (as "God" in Christianity is referred to Father) want their child to not have complete understanding or knowledge of the world? Please do not answer with because "God" said so.

  It actually had nothing to do with the fruit, or the knowledge it would bring. They already had an abstract concept of evil, so feeling it tangibly in their flesh as well in the form of the Curse would have been redundant. And they also lived in a garden where there were countless other fruit trees to eat from.
  
  What happened to them was little more than a simple test of loyalty. One they had every reason in the universe to pass. They had to go out of their way to fail that simple test. That's the point Moses was making, and it was historical. Yet, he emphasized it as well to make a point about the human condition in general. We fail even the simplest tests of loyalty to God. We go out of our way to fail Him.
  
  Consider shortly after he wrote those words, the Golden Calf incident happened. Drunkenness, child sacrifice, promiscuity, the works (and there was no "protection" to use back then.)
