What are the buddhists thoughts on the origin of the universe and the afterlife?

No. Buddhism doesn't have a "God" like most other religions. It's about achieving Nirvana, or enlightenment. In essence, it is saying that we can all be like Siddhartha Gautama, or as he is commonly referred to, Buddha.

Buddhism doesn't necessarily state there is an actually beginning to the Universe. Instead, the Universe is a cycle of death and birth, and as far as I can understand, having only a layman's knowledge in Buddhism, it posits that the Big Bang is just the beginning of one cycle. Evolution and everything that came after the Big Bang doesn't necessitate belief in a Creator God.

As for your question regarding an afterlife, Buddhism believes in a never-ending cycle of death and rebirth. This is called Samsara. You do good in this life, you might be reborn to be a better life. You do bad in this life, you might be reborn as an insect or other creature. Escaping Samsara is to attain Nirvana, and thus escape suffering. One can do this by achieving good karma and attaining enlightenment.

I say this all as a layperson who has read superficially about Buddhism. Please feel free to correct me if I've made a mistake.

Not sure about buddhists, but buddha new the reality of universe is consciousness. Meaning the "creator" and the "created" are one and the same. I'm not sure about what afterlife you mean. There are no separate entities to have an afterlife and infinite consciousness can have any experience it wants to anytime. Well for consciousness there is no time.

Buddhism became more of a philosophy over time. Basically you won't know the answer until you're awakened and break the cycle of endless reincarnation. You just have to do good and accept things as it is.

Buddhism has been disputed because of this. It doesn't believe in a creator but rather that we are all our own gods. My girlfriend is Buddhist but I don't know exactly how devout she is.

in buddhism there is not creator but they do believe in samsara, which is basically the circle of life (death and rebirth), which i mostly disagree with. taoism doesn't have that stupid idea and taoism is the basis for buddhism so i prefer taoism.

Buddhism sounds meaningless because it doesn't believe in a creator.

Hinduism also has nearly all beliefs similar to Buddhism and it believes in a creator.

So, if I had to choose between Hinduism and Buddhism then I would choose Hinduism.

Several questions arise, which cannot be explained according to Buddhist beliefs. Hinduism is kind of better. But it is really big religion with different people believing in different things.
