I was raised Catholic. My mom was very devout. She believed the Genesis myth but also believed in science and evolution. So, she reasoned that the 6 days that Genesis says it took God to create everything was an analogy and that each day actually represented eons. If one looks at the mythological narrative from that perspective, the order in which things came into being is fairly accurateII.
She certainly did NOT believe that God created the Grand Canyon, the Himalayas, dinosaurs and people all at once. She thought that He simply set things in motion and that, from the point of view of an eternal being, there is no difference between days and eons. Time is a human construct.
I don't believe in gods any more. But her reasoning was sound. And, who knows, maybe she was right.
