Do you believe in ghosts and if so, what do you think they are?

For a time, I did believe in ghosts but I questioned the notion that they are "souls" in that I didn't think of them as the surviving consciousness of someone who had passed away. Based on the ghost stories I've heard, they seem to be more like "memories" in that when ghosts are seen, they are doing what they did when they died. I mean some are just like scenes from a movie, repeatedly doing what they did when they died. Granted some sightings of ghosts have them responding to a stimulus from their environment but their response seems very predictable. I mean based on the stories, animals seem to have more decision making capacity than most ghosts do. To me it's reminiscent of people who are rendered brain dead by a stroke or injury but will still respond to triggers that bring back memories with words or gestures. At the very least if ghosts are some kind of conscious entity roaming the earth, they are at the very least in a delirious state.

As a see it to believe it type of person, I find it hard to believe all the "caught on camera" sightings. I think they're mostly a result of photoshop/video editing or horror-induced hallucinations (for in-person contact). But this is just my opinion on the matter. :)

However I do believe *in more scientific terms* that the conscious energy (or "soul") survives after the death of the physical body and lingers for a while before going into something else - becomes a different form.
