When they don’t believe in an afterlife?
u +1 yIt feels better to just think of death as “bam, lights out” rather than possibility of an afterlife. When you think of the afterlife, you think of heaven and hell, and those come with conditions - you have to do really “good” in life to get into heaven. So that puts pressure on you throughout life, feeling as if you’re constantly being judged for simply being a human with natural needs and urges. So I find it a lot more freeing and less pressure to not believe in that. There’s enough pressure in life already. I don’t need the extra stress of “oh, I made a mistake here, now I’ll be punished to eternal damnation”.

Like, I don't care. I have no data for what will happen then, so why should I spend my resources on it?33 Reply- +1 y
@ShaniaWWE that's why I don't care :D can't do anything else about it. Death is imminent

+1 yatheism wrote, life needs body, so when body dies, life ends. this faith "liberated us" from fear of hell. but it is blind faith. and no hope for heaven only a body life of misery.
some say if you belive hell you go hell but if you dont believe hell you won't go there.
the parallel of that is the guy saying that about prison. does prison stop existed for him?
test switch the word jail. if you belive hell=jail you go there, but if you dont believe hell/jail you won't go there.

+1 yI think that they just accept that death is the end of everything, they don't even believe in a god or in the bible to be able to believe in an afterlife...
Thank god that i'm a believer...210 Reply- +1 y

@slatyb that's because you chose to be blinded from the whole truth which is seen in the whole human history...
There are a lot of things in life that aren't yet explored or even found but they do exists, also our understanding of the whole physics and the universe are always updated because there is always something new that we have missed in our past studies, to say i don't believe in god means that your a god yourself because you're an all knowing being who has the power to make anything possible while the truth is that we are nothing compared to the scale of everything we know 😏
At least an agnostic says maybe yes and maybe no but an atheist is so sure that it's a no without any proof...
Anyways, each person is free to believe in what they choose to believe in... - +1 y
The whole truth? Like what? There is no evidence for an afterlife -- none, zero, zip, zilch, nada. What do we know? Consciousness is a phenomenon of the living brain. Brain damage may cause a personality change. Recently this has been in the news as a number of well-known and not so well-known football players have suffered severe psychological problems from repeated traumatic brain injury. Do you think playing football is bad for the soul?

@slatyb you're talking science, while faith is a lot more than science, the soul, god and the afterlife, also the miracles are all beyond science, that's why we call them supernatural cause science has no explanation for it, it might have an explanation but we know nothing about it...
You can't submit the whole universe and beyond to our physics that we have made, there are a lot of things which makes our physics null and always reconsider the way we understand things, going as vast as the universe to supermassive black holes down to quantum mechanics...
You think that you know it all while we know nothing on the scale of the universe... - +1 y
@slatyb it's an endless list, it starts with science which can be updated at anytime because we thought that some things works in a specific way but later found out that it was wrong or needed some sort of adjustements till the things that physics and science cannot even explain or resolve...
Even in the hadron collider, everytime there are new stuff that shows up which makes scientists rethink about the current physics... - +1 y

But i do find comfort in knowing that all my sadness or fear or anger about death is only possible because I am alive. Once dead it all goes away.

+1 yI've known some atheists who are terrified of death and others who find the idea relaxing. It seems to boil down to whether you feel like you've lived a life worth living.
Then again... I'm not an Atheist, so I can only go by what I've been told.
20 ReplyIf you truly believe in an afterlife then why you don't want to die?

I have too much living left to do first.
I don't think nihilism or being stuck in the mind is a good place to be.
Listen to 'classical' music of the past 100 years. It gives you a reflection of the Western 'intellectual's' psyche. Bleak fucking stuff.
10 ReplyBecause when I die, that'll be it, I'll be dead and I won't know it.

+1 yactually i believe the idea of a finite life is better than the idea of an eternal afterlife. cause i already know "non existence". i've done that for the billions of years that lead up to my existence.
however i think anything (be it heaven or hell) will both be eternal suffering. cause anything that lasts for ever will be pure agony for a human mind.
00 Reply 2.3K opinions shared on Religion & Spirituality topic. I don’t think they do. Death should be sad for all. Even if your life is so tough that death seems like a better option, that’s nothing to be happy about. It is devastating.

"Many say" is not evidence of anything. There is an organization for religious skeptics in military service: https://www.militaryreligiousfreedom.org/

No, we wouldn't. Your comments are typical of fervent believers -- they can't imagine that some people feel and think differently, and confidently assert that no one does. But we do think and feel quite differently from you and your community of adherents. Almost all of my friends and as far as I know most of my colleagues are atheists, and none of us are going to start praying at the end of our lives.
