it did not fail its mission... which wasn't the goal you wrote.
as the pope said when established it, it was to save souls by bringing them under his authority.
that goal had many wins.
people said they believed when they saw others tortured or killed.
it lasted hundreds of years saving many. so it didn't fail.
about purging, the expulsions in france n spain were for purging but not the goal of inquisition.
Technically they had no real mission and were just the Vatican's police and enforcement unit.
There is little evidence they were "catholic" and were often as bad as the people they going after. Sort of like US cops today having as many felonies as some of the perps they are catching, but the unions prop them up
