I was raised to uphold high morals and principles

When I first became an adult I rebelled against it.
Found it to be an outdated notion that only holds a person back.

It took maturity to realize why high morals and principles are by far the most important characteristics a person could have.
And are nothing but a strength.

No matter who or where you are, you character is the first thing people see when they meet you.
Not your story or your possessions.

And a strong character is instantly magnetic in all the right ways.
It makes people far more likely to associate with you, trust you, root for you.
    And that is true power.

That’s why to some people every door seems to swing wide open and to others they are constantly denied and rejected

It means so many things. High morals and principles encompass a lot.

It means you have integrity. It means you're the same person in the dark as you are in the light. It means that you value honesty over personal gain. It means taking accountability for your actions, especially if they're wrong. It's about having the courage to stand up for what's right, even if what's right is unpopular. It means treating people based on what's right, and not how you feel. It means being empathetic and compassionate. It means having humility. And it also means being loyal to those in your life, even during the times they have it rough.

High morals or principles are just more complicated than basic shit like "Don't kill people that don't deserve it."

So for example..."Don't get financially involved with friends and family" comes from a place of experience which I would call wisdom. Those that know, know exactly why I just said that. This could attach to other moral principles like "Pretend your broke, even if you have money" which is probably worded better from the Bible or even the Quran. If you're a braggart and show off... guess what, they'll ask you for money, a loan, just let me borrow it for a week type of stuff. If you can look them in the face and say, "I was just about to ask you if I could get some money, I'm more broke than you!!!" they'll recend their request and back away from you.

You get what I'm saying so far or do I just sound like a complete retard to you? I'm trying to give an example of how a basic principle has to grow or expand, and it develops higher principles just to protect the basic principle or at least make it easier to live by. You get it right?

I mean it's hella easy for me to just say..."Don't involve financial matters with your friends and family," but that shit is easier said than done in some cases. Higher principles or what I would call "basic rules to follow" make it easy to do that. You can deflect the guilt trips they'll put on you or think you have what it takes to be cold enough to outright tell them you won't buy the medicine that can cure them just because... I mean choose your path wisely.

It means restricting yourself based on sensibilities or a personal reality. High morals means you're liable to end up a victim. High moral ones are the same people who don't bring a gun into bear country. Who refuse to kill intruders who want to rape and murder them or their family. The same ones who would rather force victims to pay for their attackers to survive, than to simply allow the attackers to die.

Like for me, mine are simple. Don't rape, show loyalty, and protect my loved ones. That's it. I don't rape anyone, I get enthusiastic consent or shit doesn't happen. If my loved ones need me, I'm there, end of discussion. If you are a danger to me or my loved ones, I will fucking kill you. If you hurt them, you'll die screaming.

Morals and principles mean absolutely nothing unless you can and will enforce them on yourself.

My 10 Commandments as they stand now.
    1. Do no purposeful harm to others, except for the physical defense of you and yours.
    2. You, and you alone are responsible for your actions.
    3. All people have the right to be treated in a respectfully dignified manner.
    4. Make your actions and words ethical and honorable. Use common sense.
    5. Accept constructive criticism and learn from your mistakes.
    6. Be tolerant. You have your morals, beliefs and practices and others have theirs.
    7. Find the even ground in what you do.
    8. Seek out pleasure.
    9. Look for facts. Truths are arbitrary.
    10. Believe in yourself first and foremost.

Having high morals or principles means having standards you don’t abandon when it’s inconvenient.

It’s knowing what you believe and living in alignment with it, even when no one’s watching.

    It’s not about being perfect.
    It’s about being consistent.

And most of all, it’s choosing integrity over advantage.

Having high morals and principles doesn't mean anything. The only thing that has meaning is standing up for your principles when it actually costs something to do so. Would you take a stand against the government? Go to jail over a point of principle? Would you allow yourself to be fed to lions or would you renounce your beliefs?

I'm afraid I'm the wrong person to offer up advice on morality, ethics, or principles since my own have been severely fluid and situational for a long long time. I'm definitely on the highway to Hell.

    Ethics.

When we try to be virtuous, its not virtue anymore. The act of trying for oneself is selfish and therefore not virtue.

Having principles is a double edged sword. It means with great power comes even greater responsibilities.

It means that morals don't get downgraded to unimportant status whenever they become inconvenient.

Just a fake way some use to feel holy. And better than others. To replace religious morality.

Being alone a lot of the time. There's only a stairway to heaven but there's an entire highway to hell. Try to remember that.
