socialism is of course a dirty word thanks to Russian communism in the 20th century. The Cold War struck fear into so many across the world (but primarily America) that the association of socialism > communism > Russia essentially made Socialism a bad word. The simple fact that a senator held hearings to weed out American celebrities who had ties to socialism is all the evidence we need of the silly fear people have of socialism... I mean our government tried to have Charlie Chaplin deported, and we all know the danger the silly silent actor posed to America's security
