Being an introvert in a school system designed for extroverts

Important thing to know before you continue reading this myTake:

Being an introvert in a school system designed for extroverts

Me in high school. At least now in college nobody is popular because we are all just trying to get through school and we are all broke and have tons of student debt.

I had a hard time getting letters of recommendation because so many teachers favored my extroverted students yet would complain about how loud they were.

I am really glad that my humanities teacher is an introvert and never calls on us. He is also an introvert and does not think less of the introverted students. He mentioned last class about how he asked a bunch of his colleagues if they felt their introverted students were not paying attention or if they were daydreaming because they participate less than their extroverted students and he said he was disturbed by how many said yes.

Which is probably why i had so much trouble getting letters of reccomendation for a scholarship in high school, even from teachers i felt confident would give me recommendations. The good news is, is that i did get one of the interviews, that are only for the finalists. I nailed the interview and got the scholarship.

These sentences:

All right class lets get into groups or find yourself a partner! unless I had a few friends in that class i wa fine but if i had a class with a bunch of the preps, I was screwed.

How about we go around the class and introduce ourselves? or even worse: we are going to play some fun icebreakers! Its evven worse if you can come up with something on the spot.

If nobody says the answer I will start calling names.

I hated this so much, still do. Eventually I started saying the answers to other questions that were easy so that i would not get called on because that way i have "participated enough" and the teacher would call on someone else. Almost all of my elementary school teachers had those stupid sticks. And of course I usually get picked and I either a) forget the question b) forgot my homework that day or c) say the answer but then the teacher tells me to go up and show how I got my answer

Teachers either loved me or didn't like me very much. I remember the teachers who loved me said i had "quiet intelligence" and they appreciated that, other teachers said something along the lines of this:

And then I did talk this happened:

I would always think to myself probably because you are talking! I can't help that I am naturally softspoken.

Group projects.

Being an introvert in a school system designed for extroverts

I think one of the few things high school taught me was, I dont do group projects. I am a work first, play later kind of person and when I was in high school if I had big project I got started on it right away. People i worked with were either unreliable or dont want to start on it right away and thought I was crazy for wanting to get it done so quickly. They always talked me into not starting on whatever project right away but eventually we were left scrambling trying to get it done. I prefered to work alone because I usually get a higher grade. There were few occasions I agreed to work with. people. But even then, I knew for sure they were reliable. I remember agreeing to work with a good friend of mine and thats because like me she likes to get things done quickly and she is reliable.

I used to do this a lot when I was very young. Now I will do the presentation because I dont want to sacrifice my grade for having stage fright but if I dont know what i am about to say, I will stumble over every word.

My idea of a good time in high school and in college while everyone else prefered to go to the basketball and football games

Being known as the quiet one in every class

Being an introvert in a school system designed for extroverts

It was so annoying in elementary and high school that people would make it their personal mission to break me out of my shell which never happened.

Being an introvert in a school system designed for extroverts

Use this as a reference if you know any introverts. Thank me later!

Being an introvert in a school system designed for extroverts

It never fails to piss me that people dont at the very least, try to understand. Mainly my family but classmates as well. On my last my take about introverts (different account) some people said some rude stuff about being an introvert and this all i have to say:

By the way if you are an introvert or would like to get to know them better, I highly recommend this book:
