Guide to living with a male roommate (for women)

I’ve been living with a male roommate for a number of months now and I thought it would be a fun my take idea to do something about having a male roommate. So I also thought it would be easier to do one that was targeted to women, let me know if you think I should do one targeted to men. I’ll touch upon other reasons later in the mytake.

Don't live with someone your attracted to

So if you end up sleeping with your roommate and things don’t end well with them or one of you ends up having feelings for the other that the other person doesn’t share than you would still have to live together. Chances are you would still see them on a daily bases. Believe me it would be difficult to spend so much time with someone you’d feel like having sex whenever you want sex. Especially if they’re not interested.

Be prepared to see him shirtless or in his underwear

This will happen probably on a regular bases. Walking to and from the shower, seeing them walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night trust me this adds up. It’s their home to so they’re not going to tailor their lives to you all the time just like you’ll want to be comfortable at home so will he.

Accidentally seeing him naked is very possible

Like I said before coming in and out of the shower is a thing. You never know walking into the bathroom when he forget to lock the door or seeing him changing by accident it’s possible. Now it probably won’t happen because chances are you both plan to avoid that but it can happen.

Understand that he won't always adjust his behavior when he's around you due to the fact that you’re a women

When guys are at home they don’t always want to be extra polite and considerate. Sometimes guys want to relax. Maybe a guy has to fart or burp in the comfort of his own home. Personally I like wearing just an undershirt other guy might want to do that to and if it’s their place than why should they never do that because your around.

Costume changes

This might not happen to often but if they have a date or something they might want your opinion. Most guys would only take a few minutes to get dressed but on ocation they would want a girl opinion on how they look. My advice would be set a limit on how many changes they get like 2 or 3 times their allowed to ask.

Having girlfriends (meaning your friends that are women) over

So this would probably be the worst part about having a male roommate. It’s their house and if they want to be there and you happen have your girlfriends over without a guy would being there than it could be a major buzz kill. However you could always tell him ahead of time and workout some sort of arrangement.

You can wear casual clothes with him around

This might be an issue with some guys but you’ll probably want to wear casual clothes without having to dress nice and wear makeup, but be prepared to get a look or comment about it.

Be upfront about all concerns

If there’s an issue you have that you have say it up front. Even if you don’t thinks a big deal say it before it’s too late. Don’t assume he knows a lot about women and he’s ready for any issue that comes up. Maybe he thinks it’s okay to do one thing when it’s not.

I know you said this was geared toward women, but I think you are missing A LOT. First of all, this is your place too, so if your so called buddy has no respect for you or women in general, yes, he will continue to dance around naked or in underoos for you to see. Secondly, why would you room with a dude you are attracted to, might date, might ask out or have sex with, knowing if the shit hits the fan and all goes south, not just your lips, that you will have to keep seeing this douche after that breakup? BAD mistake. Maybe there should be rules. NO dating. NO other friends over the apartment unless you have permission from the other roommate (s.) and YES, this means dates. NO hogging the living room/tv (I had this bad experience with a really good friend (we are both straight men, ftr)) NO bringing home new pets, unless you again, have established a free for all rule, where you can do everything but burn the place down. I had to establish a rule at my parent's home when we had parties (with parental permission) NO drugs allowed inside the house. Sorry, folks, I am NOT 420 friendly. Hate me if you will, I don't give a flying f. Back to my comment, be careful. Don't do anything foolish. And what douche of a guy would complain about an all girls sleepover... well unless he is gay and wants men companions, sure. BUT, yes, definitely get permission first. It's all about respect. Remember one thing, you are ROOMMATES, not fuck buddies.

I lived with two girls after getting out of college, I traveled a lot just as they did so many times we hardly saw each other, usually around holidays and some weekends we would all be home, many times they might have a friend or relative around with them too.
I was pretty focused on my career and didn't socialize much with them, they had been friends for years and seemed to do more together, one was kind of rude in all honesty, the other was a free spirit, and liked to talk about anything including sex, she used to tease me about my lack of dating and about how I was in my room a lot, she thought I masturbated a lot more than I did. One weekend her younger sister visited, and I ended up sleeping with her sister, it wasn't planned but after a night of drinking it happened. Our other roommate was traveling and after her sister left town we were watching TV and she mentioned how her sister enjoyed her time visiting, and soon after that her and I had sex. It was nice while it lasted.

When I was at uni I lived in a unit with three other guys. (One whom I was dating). Advice I would give girls living in an all male household...
1. Don't leave your crap around in common areas. ( no one appreciates it, and let's leave some mystery)
2. Don't mind if the guys do the above rule.
3. You can on occasion add feminine touches. E. g. I added a novelty cookie jar to the kitchen. Cookies are a bonus! But don't go over board! You the female are the intruder here!
4. You will see each, and everyone of your flatmates naked at some point. Act cool, and it will be fine.
5. They will come to you for support, so be nice. One of my flatmates dyed his hair accidentally orange, and another was really crushed by a girl. I provided a shoulder and some cupcakes.
6. Be nice and volunteer to cook
7. Accept the fact that you will clean more than anyone else. Either shut up and live with the mess or clean it yourself.

I am sure that there is more, but can't think of any more advice. Overall, it was a good experience.

i can honestly say in my 3 years of living in an apartment with 5 other dudes, 4 has never happened to me... i guess some are luckier than others :D

@QooLipBite nope! That was my boyfriend problem! If I ever needed anything, they would just call to him, or look to him. So I guess they kinda did take care.

This is all true. My male roommate is like a brother to me. We’ve seen each other naked and in underwear in a no sexual way, and I’m comfortable farting, burping, peeing, and shitting in front of him. Really, I was from the start. Especially the farting and burping, that’s impossible to avoid when you’re rooming with a girl my age and girls farting and/or burping is something most guys get a laugh out of anyway. I do all of the farting for the both of us though, I’m convinced he doesn’t have bodily functions.

I live in a co-ed house (we're all in college), and the fact that we filled the upstairs with gals and the downstairs with guys helped alleviate any of those issues. It's a nice thing to spend time living with people of the opposite sex that you aren't romantically involved with. It's like reading a women's magazine because you're curious about how they think, but better.

Great take - It makes a whole lot of sense - Especially developing feelings, try to be yourself with each other and if that means slobbing out in sweats in front of the TV so be it and forewarn of any girly or guys nights, your roommate might want to avoid same probably goes for having boyfriend or girlfriend over. Costumes changes must admit never thought of that and communicate your concerns, I think as much as possible have that in every interaction.
