Why Feminism Is No Longer What We Should Strive For

Why feminism is no longer what we should strive for

I used to call myself a feminist. And it makes sense why, there’s tons of issues regarding women we need to discuss and solve. I still think that feminism has been very valuable throughout history. To deny that is foolish, I mean, women wouldn’t even be able to vote or work without it.

But, I don’t believe we have much use for it in the western world anymore. Not because we no longer have any issues regarding women, we do. (Hella.) But because even the term itself excludes an entire gender. It’s in human nature to want to be liked, to be accepted and most of all, to be included. The term does not imply that. Let’s break it up:

feminism: the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.

feminism is derived from french, with fem referring to femme, which means woman.

Now let’s talk definition. The public support of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. Sounds good right? Except we already have equality legally. The thing that needs changing is the social and cultural norms regarding women. But by using a term such as feminism, we cannot do that. Simply because we exclude males, while males are oftentimes the problem.

How are you going to solve an issue without including the issue?

Males should be able to participate, to talk about women’s issues, while no one disregards male issues. Because those exist too. Males get raped. Males aren’t always able to express themselves emotionally. Males are ashamed of their sexuality. Of their body.

And I know I sound like some guy screaming “WELL OUR GENDER HAS ISSUES TOO!” while you speak up about female issues. I’m sorry. That’s not what I want. No one deserves to be left unheard. Truth is, the world is a pretty shitty place to be right now for anyone, regardless of gender. Everything needs to improve, and focusing on one gender just seems wrong to me.

So what should we strive for? To be egalitarian. Not only does its definition include all genders, it includes all races and sexual orientations too, because it does not specify.

Egalitarian: believing in or based on the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities.

a person who advocates or supports the principle of equality for all people.
