  Personally, I think you are making a big deal of nothing. Governess used to mean the female position of a governor, but that use has been out of fashion for a very long time. 1400-50; late Middle English governeress < Old French gouverneresse, feminine of gouverneur governor; see -ess
  There are other examples of this that are similar.
