Racism Isn't Always A Choice

Racism Isn't Always A Choice

This take is not written to support racism in any way and also not to justify it. I'm not racist and I do believe racism should be eliminated from this world. This take is just my logical explanation for the following concept.

While thinking about racism and it's existence, I found this logic very convincing. Although I don't support racism, I'd love to share this take with you. You might disagree with it but it is my humble request to you. Please elaborate your disagreement convincing logic.I'd love to read if you write a take a part of the disagreement. This take is logic and common knowledge-based and hence vulnerable.

Attraction isn’t a choice and so repulsion

Racism Isn't Always A Choice

It is commonly believed that we don’t control who we’re attracted to. I support this claim hence also included in my previous take “Dating preferences are NOT racist”. BUT we all know attraction and repulsion are two sides of the same coin. Both are spontaneous and subconscious. When you consider races, one can argue that “You can NOT control who you’re repulsed from” and this is true.

I’ll give you an example:

Suppose you don’t like Broccoli. Can you explain why you don’t like it? The fastest answer will be “It tastes like crap” but can you explain why it doesn’t taste good? You can’t! Your attraction or repulsion towards Broccoli is completely subconscious. You don’t choose to like it or hate it. You just hate it. But at the same time, someone can love eating broccoli and someone can just be indifferent about it. That’s how attraction/repulsion works. So if you can’t control what you like to eat then how are you supposed to control which race you find repulsive? Well, I think this is where racism begins!

Love is a feeling and so the hate

Racism Isn't Always A Choice

This point is again based on a popular opinion. “Love is a feeling and not a choice and hence subconscious” as explained in point before, love and hate are two sides of the same coin. Conditions which apply for love are true for hate as well. Hence Hate is also a feeling which can uncontrollable.

It is part of Nurture but you can’t control it

Racism Isn't Always A Choice

The intensity of racism definitely depends on nurture and people surrounding us do influence it. But for 100 percent, we don’t control people around us all the time. It can be your mother, neighbor or boss who influences your opinion and you can’t replace those people. If you tell the same lie to someone hundred times, it won’t make it true but definitely, that person will start believing it is true.

Secondly, We usually don’t like people much different than us. Take homosexuals for example. Being homosexuality wasn’t acceptable for centuries until this one. Why do people hate them? Because basically they’re different than the majority. For the same reason, a white boy living in a completely white neighborhood might dislike a black guy he sees. Discriminating against people different than us is the part of human nature and yes, exceptions are there.

Jealousy plays an important part too

The racism is mainly hate for a certain race. Jealousy can be a cause of it as well. It can be a jealousy against whites for heritage or jealousy against blacks due to masculinity or against Asians due to intelligence etc. (just some stereotypes which are not true. I used them for the sake of explanation). But once again, jealousy isn’t a choice either. You don’t control it. It is subconscious.

When is racism a choice?

Racism Isn't Always A Choice

All the points mentioned above say that racism is subconscious, not a choice. But in real life when it comes to implying it, Racism is a CHOICE. As said above, you don’t control who you’re attracted to or whom you love. But when attracted, it is a choice to pursue that person. When in love, it is a choice to stay with that person. With jealousy again, it is a CHOICE to hurt that person. With this take all I want to say is Subconscious racism isn’t really a choice. You can be racist inside deep down, you might dislike a race unintentionally but it is YOUR CHOICE to be racist consciously and discriminate against certain race. Don’t blame your subconscious for your deeds!
