Why I, as a White American, Support Black Lives Matter

Self Explanitory

This goes back more generations than we can count. And I do not expect most of middle class white America to understand this. Tbh, I didn’t always.

It is disproportionate. That is a fact. And it stems from years of learned racism. White isn’t a culture it is a privilege which has been historically used to repress black people. Thus creating the Black-American culture that exists today.

Someone I knew, went to school with, was NOT A BAD PERSON OR A CRIMINAL was shot and killed in his car in front of his girlfriend and young child for literally following instructions. THAT IS NOT OK. White Americans have the luxury of living in ignorant bliss and having an experience like I did having the police come to an icy road crash and not only not write me a ticket, but take me to my medical appointment. A black American in that situation would be having an anxiety attack and fearing for their life. That is why stickers like Police Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter and All Lives matter are racist.

White Americans, as a race, did not suffer years of oppression, abuse, mistreatment, and so much worse. Everyone already fucking knows white lives matter. We do not need a sign or bumper sticker for that.

Just as “start seeing motorcycles” calls attention to inattentive drivers disproportionately hitting motorcycles; “black lives matter” calls attention to the police disproportionately killing black Americans who posed no threat and getting away with it. @doopayo kindly provided some statistical evidence for this and I am going to credit her research below: “There have been several studies done and statistics consistently showing how black men are disproportionately killed by the police.

The probability of being black, unarmed and shot by police is about 3.5 times the probability of being white, unarmed and shot by police.

These are noble sentiments, but in truth "Black Lives Matter" is really little more than a group of people following a trendy slogan masquerading as serious thought. Where it is more substantive it tends to the extreme and is not so much the pursuit of justice as the catharsis that comes with seeking vengeance.

Thus for example, Black Lives Matter's recent craze to "defund the police." This is patently self-destructive where it is not simply absurd. Indeed, it was not 30 years ago that African-American community leaders were demanding a stronger police presence in minority communities as crime rates - as a result of the 1960s/70s passion for treating the criminal as a victim rather than a perpetrator - soared.

Indeed, thus how the nation got to its' current fits of moral exhibitionism and self-pity. The increased police presence of the 1980s, 90s and early 2000s brought crime rates down to levels that had not been seen since the peaceful placid 1950s. Now relatively secure and safe, many in those communities began to take their safety for granted and found the means to such safety as intolerably oppressive and racist.

Thus the cries of institutional racism and the theatrical protests in the streets that have now conduced to violence. It is feeling substituting for facts as the data show that, by far, most crime in the African-American community is black on black, that whites are far more likely to suffer police brutality than are black and indeed that in 2019, the last year that full statistics are available, that a grand total of 10 African-Americans were shot by white police officers.

All this against a background where, until the recent pandemic, the unemployment rate among African-Americans had fallen to its' lowest level since statistics for that demographic began to be kept in 1947. This also in a country that had not so long ago elected and re-elected its' first African-American President. A thing that would have been impossible had it depended upon African-American votes alone.

No matter, particularly in a populist age where the common man is fancied the pinnacle of all virtue and where self-pity is at a premium, the conclusion has been drawn that America is irreducibly racist and African-Americans are oppressed - the latter also playing off the virtue and cachet that comes with being classified a victim. This then leading to an extremism that is profoundly silly where it is not profoundly self-destructive.

Thus Black Lives Matter recently called for the abolition of the traditional family. This ignoring the fact that African-American children are, by far, the most likely to be born out of wedlock and raised by single mothers. The social pathologies that flow from that to follow - including higher illiteracy, a greater chance of criminal activity, drug addiction and so on.

Of course, instantly it will be argued that there is racism in America, as the recent Minneapolis episode illustrates. Actually, that is slipshod language. Bigotry there is. Racism, on the other hand, is a schematic ideology and is comparatively rare.

No matter, human beings are imperfect and imperfectible and if the expectation is that there will be no justice or peace until perfect racial harmony is achieved, the wait is apt to be a very long one. Indeed, it will come at the cost of the very social stability that the African-American community needs if it is to overcome the maladies that afflict it and are, by far, the primary source of its' grievances.

So Black Lives Matter is the drivel that is left behind when slogans substitute for thought and emotion replaces analysis. It being further aggravated by a supine culture that prizes moral exhibitionism and "virtue signaling" over the hard work and inevitably imperfect outcomes that will facilitate real social improvement.

I don't call this woman "crazy" I respect everyone. and then when I use that word it doesn't have the meaning you can give it. I use these words in English as I use them in my everyday language in French, which I shouldn't do, because in English it takes on a whole new meaning.

To give an example the word "Damn" which is written in French "putain" in French when we use this word we speak of a "prostitute" but it can have another meaning as for example if you see some things which you impresses you can use for example these words in French "damn, it's crazy" Of course when you use these words in French I am not treating the person of "prostitute" and "crazy". my mistake is to use a colloquial French language that I use in my daily life whereas in English it does not mean the same thing and it can be perceived as insulting

If someone has to say "black lives matter," then implies they never really thought they mattered before, in the first place. It's like saying "I need oxygen to breathe" or "killing innocent people is bad" (when they ARE innocent that is, and not just dark-skinned criminals).

This is why so many people don't believe these movements, to begin with. Other than the obvious bait-and-switch, if you have to tell someone you're something most people already are, then it means you likely never were, to begin with. It's like constantly telling people "I'm human! I'm a human being! I breathe oxygen and come from the planet Earth! I love human things that humans love!" It doesn't really make you NOT sound like an alien when that's all you can say over and over again.

Being a "socially approved bigot" doesn't make you any less of a bigot, fam. Many people just follow these movements because they get guilt-tripped into them or don't know the difference between right and wrong, though. When they (BLM) came to my town to protest, they were politely informed that if they started being violent, the police would turn their backs if the community chose to defend its self. They were here for all of an hour, they marched down main Street, lining the sides of main Street were heavily armed counter protesters, most of them black. Suffice it to say, it was one of the VERY few non violent protests.. It's hard to be violent when you have thousands of guns pointed at you lol. One thing I noticed about the ones that came here, they were mostly white.. That right there told me a lot of what I needed to know about BLM.

Black people are killed by police disproportionately because they commit more crime and therefore have more police interactions.

If 10 black men out of 300 police interactions are killed by police while 5 white men out of 100 police interactions are killed by police then that means yes, blacks are disproportionately killed by police... but white men are still more likely to be killed by police, and that's factual. Political factions like BLM love to manipulate the numbers every which way to make blacks seem like victims no matter what. They say "Blacks are more likely to get longer sentences!" Which is true, but they completely ignore the fact that in these cases they're likely repeat offenders. It also matters how you interact with police... you can be unarmed but if you fight police there's still a good chance you're going to catch some lead. Show me a white guy who bashes a lone cop's head with a rock and doesn't get shot.

I don't know what happened with your friend. Did his family get a payout? Were you there? What did the bodycam look like? For all we know his family is bullshitting and he was alone and tried to ram police with his car. And in many of these cases of "police misconduct" there is never any actual proof of racism, it's just assumed because the victim is black. There's plenty of instances of white men being treated the same but you don't actually care enough to know them. And when a white man is killed do you think the media blows it up? Why do you know the name "George Floyd" but not "Daniel Shaver?"

Also, you can be against police brutality without joining a destructive movement that supports killing innocent cops. Not to mention it's a grift... and has a communist background... and it's not actually going to solve shit and will just sow more division.

And frankly, I suggest that if you think being white is an innate privilege then maybe it's YOU that is privileged and you lack the EMPATHY to understand that people of your race also can suffer from many things. This should point out to you just how fucked up it is your country still has this massive a race issue (which has now spilled over into others in the last two years so, thanks America): In 2016 I briefly dated this African-Canadian woman who moved from America, before then, Nigeria. She moved specifically because of Trump's election (there was an influx of this in cities near the border, which is most of this country's fuckin population, like Toronto). She remarked how much more welcoming Canada is and how many problems she had in New York.

Me being me, I didn't understand why, which was also part of the reason that didn't last long cause I, a white heterosexual male, had never encountered most of the issues or seen them in my life and just simply didn't understand what thw problem was and she failed at getting me to understand.

My son asked many honest questions about skin color so I found the book “all the colors we are” skin color is based on the amount of melanin in the skin. So we learned about the different amounts and why that is. It was very fascinating.

That's because the probability of interacting with police is much higher for blacks than whites because the commit more crimes.

The problem with this study, like almost every other one, is that it uses as its denominators the black and white populations rather than the only groups who matter, which are those who are arrested. People rarely get shot by police when they are getting a haircut or having dinner at home. It happens during attempted arrests. The vast majority of police shootings occur during arrest attempts, and blacks are arrested at a FAR higher rate per capita than whites because they generally commit crimes at a far higher rate than whites.

For example, black men, who represent about 7% of the US population account for roughly half of the murders committed every year. They also commit other violent crimes at a higher rate than whites. It's naïve to think they don't put themselves at a far greater risk of being shot by police as a result.

Add to that the fact that police "expect" blacks to commit more crime than whites (because they do), police get shot by blacks at a much higher rate than by whites, and blacks are more likely to resist arrest, and none of this should come as a surprise to anyone.

Just saying unarmed blacks are shot by police at higher rates without all the facts and context is terribly misleading.

I personally cannot support such a hypocritical organization or cause simply because of how manipulative and corrupt it is. They take events that happen, and spin it into a race baiting narrative to further push their own agenda. Obama started the whole "have no respect for law enforcement" movement. He said that the Cambridge cop "acted stupidly" when he asked a person of color for some id. the person of color refused and escalated the situation and and a big stink ensued.
As a general rule of thumb you should not resist arrest. Obama wanted people to believe the police are the enemy. People that live in high crime areas know that is false and would like more of a police presence. Obama has Secret Service protection on Marthas Vineyard. The rest of us have to take our chances.
When people believe the police are the enemy and resist arrest there can only be a bad outcome.
When you shoot at a cop, they will return fire. When you steal their taser and try to shoot them with it they will shoot you. They cannot afford to be incapacitated and lose control of their gun. Two years ago a cop that lived in my town was hit over the head with a rock, had his weapon taken away from him and not only was he killed with it but a woman watching from her house was also shot and killed. The killer was a member of a minority group yet this is never talked about. It does not fit the narrative.
The BLM movement is more complicated than just white cops killing black people who were just minding their own business. It has always been about politics and had been pushed by democrats in an attempt to pander for votes.

I agree with that but cops are here to enforce the laws whether you agree with them or not and the reality is that there are people out there that would kill you as soon as look at you. I knew a cop that told a guy to stop. The guy turned fast and the cop killed him. He was lucky that the guy had a gun in his hand that the cop couldn't see. The cop that told me the story said that anybody else would be dead but this cop shot before he even saw the gun because he had a hunch he guy was carrying, This is what cops live with on a daily basis.

This was a great MyTake, but I have a few thoughts and opinions on it. Many Indians face racism in the USA. Asians do too (yes, I know that India is a part of Asia) what do you say about that? and yes, honestly, after seeing on the news about racism in the USA, I decided never to move there. I have faced racism from a lot of Americans, and in my opinion, Canadians and Brits are far more tolerant of all races than the Americans. I'm sorry if this offended you, but I lived in the UK for a year, and I did not get discriminated against. My brother lives in England and he's never faced racism there. When one of my friends moved from India to Pennsylvania, she experienced heavy racism there. Her sister (who was at that time a sophomore) had a friend, and her mother asked her not to talk to her again, just because my friend's sister was an Indian. I was heartbroken when I heard this. My dad does not want me to move to the USA, and wants me to move somewhere else. I do not mean for this to offend you, nor am I saying that all Americans are racist, because not all are.
