For disclosure purposes, I'm morally pro-life and legally pro-choice.

Even though those who are strongly pro-life are happy right now with this decision, the only real winners are going to be those who are hard-core pro-abortionists, and not those who are "reasonably" pro-choice. The general public just doesn't realize that fact yet. The vast majority of abortions in this country already occur in the more liberal states of New York, Illinois, and California... and those 3 states, along with other more liberal states, are going to wind up legalizing late-term, third trimester abortions. Most of the more conservative states, other than Texas and a few other swing states, are sparsely populated and already have far less abortions than their liberal counterparts.

Then you're going to have liberal activists happily sponsoring and publicizing trips and protections for women to travel from more conservative states to more liberal states to have abortions.

For every fetus "legally" saved in more conservative states, about a dozen are going to be "legally" terminated in their third trimester in more liberal states. That's not pro-life or pro-choice. That's pro-abortion.

As a side note, expanding the Supreme Court requires a new amendment to the Constitution. That requires a 75% ratification by the states (38 out of 50). That'll never happen, and isn't the answer for any issue anyway.

I disagree. Being pro-choice is a needed legitimate legal and medical necessity. Supporting unfettered late-term third trimester abortions is not. There's a difference. Approximately 14 to 18 weeks is a reasonable demarcation. Most countries in Europe are set at 14 weeks. Other than necessary and emergency medical circumstances, there's no reason it should take a reasonable person more than 18 weeks to make a decision.

I will add one thing. The House Of Representatives can also vote to make it a national law. It doesn't have to be an added Amendment in the Constitution.

People who get late term abortions either get them because they didn't know they were pregnant, circumstances have changed with their health, a family members health or the fetuses health. It's not a decision taken lightly and it is less than 1% of all abortions. They are more likely wanted pregnancies that happened at unfortunate timing. So no you cannot be both. They contradict eachother. You are either one or the other.

The States' Rights argument works both ways. Just like you're going to have conservative states making all abortions illegal (which is insane), Liberal states are going to do the opposite and completely legalize late-term, third trimester abortions. So that less than 1% you cited (that you're completely correct about) is probably going to increase. It's a mess on both ends.

The Democrats currently have the majority in the House Of Representatives and Vice President Harris is the tiebreaker as the President Of The Senate, which is currently 50-50. Joe Biden is the current President. If they wanted to get something done, they can do it now. It'll pass the House, it'll pass the Senate (or Harris will break the tie in the Senate), and Biden would sign it into law.

However let's be realistic. We both know they're not going to do anything. They could've done something before this decision was ever handed down, once Biden was inaugurated. Anger and discord gins up political money. There's no fund raising money to be made on either side when issues are actually resolved.

I skimmed y'alls comments and a couple quick thoughts that no one cares about...

1. It's a tragedy anytime an abortion happens. No one plans for that outcome. A far greater outcome is anyone incapable of respecting the boundary between a woman & her doctor.

2. The # of Supreme Court justices has changed several times in murrrican history. The court has become just another arm of the 2-party oligarchy, with obvious political ties that are gradually eroding whatever trust might be left of America's political system, both domestically and abroad. Expand the shiz ASAP... but yes, I do understand the obvious hurdles that'll face. Repubs are cutthroat politicians willing to literally change precedent and the fabric of what's made America work to this point, while the Dems will hold hands in a circle singing kumbabya while hoping something changes.

When people let religion make decisions for a country rather than medical and legal, it’s on a slippery slope.

I guess a modern version of the Underground Railway will come in to being, clandestinely moving women who need urgent healthcare that their state will not provide.

Who pays for the support services, is it Federal government or State?

As everything connected to childcare, fostering, medical support for children born with medical issues, mental health care, early life child death, will need their funding increased.

If it’s from central government, should they pay for states who ban it, or should those states have to impose extra anti abortion taxes and central government withdraw funding?

I think we're all in shock at how something this psychotic could be happening in the 21st century. It feels like some Islamic fundamentalist-level crazy. The court isn't the way to go forward. The best way is for congress to codify abortion rights into federal law, and that would need a Democratic majority. Of course it helps if people start voting at the state level as well. Nonetheless you can expect states like Texas and Arizona to be interesting battleground states this Fall.

Good to know. In the end it will be mainly an inconvenience to go to another state. When I was growing up it was illegal to get a tattoo in the state where I live. People would drive to the next state and get inked. I see it as being similar to that.

1. Taking away someone's right to control their own bodies, is inherently traumatic.

2. Their careers are often torpedoed, and pregnant women and single mothers often get paid less than they normally would. So financially that is terrifying.

3. Their schooling is also on hold, which will fuck up their futures.

4. If it was done by rape, you again stole a victims ability to control her body, and forced her to have a daily reminder for the rest of her life, about what was done to her. And no, physical damage and alterations to the body doesn't end when you give birth.

We would have free healthcare, we would have paid maternity leave, we wouldn't have one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the developed world, kids would be safe in school.
