I was taught at school the myth about columbus discovering the world was round comes from a victorian comedy show. It was meant as a joke but people thought it was true and it stuck in the public mind.
There's also suggestions columbus had heard of land to the east from fishermen.
As for telling the truth, people don't like their simple childhood version corrupted, that's true with most history not just columbus.
Wow, a comedy show? It had to be old AF. Because I was taught that nonsense when I was in kindergarten. We kept being told he could tell by watching ships sail out into the ocean.
I remember being five years old and wondering. . . why couldn't anyone else see the same thing?
It was just stupid.
I remember failing American History in high school because the final exam was an essay test on something about the Revolutionary War or the Civil War, I can't even remember, straight from a textbook. I wrote on the paper " This is BS", handed it to the teacher and said "I'm done", and left.

When the truth about a thing becomes known, disproving what was previously thought of as true, this is suddenly "woke" learning - as IF that's a bad thing, huh? Plus, you're only off by about 2,000 years when it comes to thinking the Earth was round. Pythagorus first proposed this around 500 BC, and it became widely accepted by a great many thinkers, philosophers' and men of "science" during his time.
As to slavery being "accepted" at the time, it wasn't accepted everywhere in the world. Sure, the caste system existed in many different forms, but that never made it right, or humane. For one, that premise is only partially correct - that the tribes were extremely territorial, some worse than others. But eventually the Iroquois Confederacy was formed by 5 tribes who recognized the senselessness of all the killing. Jefferson and Madison incorporated many aspects of their tribal laws when forming the basis of the US Constitution. I never said anything about removing statues. But people have a right to erect any statue or remove it as long as they pay their tax dollars for their maintenance or removal. If you want to vote for some cat who promises to build more Confederate statues, that on you. Stop making that my problem.
I have no idea who Calvin Griffith was. I was never made to read anything about him. In fact, my schooling taught me painfully little about the fantasy of race or the experiences of racism.

Last time I remember learning from school, Columbus left on the intention of going to India to trade, which is why he called the natives "Indians". Meaning when he supposedly slaughtered all those natives, he intended to do it to the actual Indians instead.
