Many studies have been done that show a massive decline in female happiness over the past 50-60 years (Western society), and most will in short tell you that as women become more “equal” to men, they discover life sucks.

The truth of the matter is that even though more women work than before and more are pulling away from the stable and logical gender roles of the past, women are so overwhelmingly privileged in Western society that they are simply bored and boredom leads to unhappiness.

Like spoiled entitled children, they have no challenge, no responsibility, no actual struggle. It is hard to find joy in things that are simply handed to you.

Yes, Women will be the first to tell you that they are none of these things and will point out how “wOmEn wERe oPpReSsEd” and apparently still are, and will simply call any man who points it out a “miSoGiNiSt”, because doing this is easier than accepting responsibility for themselves or admitting the truth of how easy life is for them.

Women of the past were not “oppressed”, they were “taken care of” by men as a logical and natural law of nature. Society and human nature has always been gynocentric. 99.9% of all deadly work and war deaths were and still are men. Society is built on the backs and blood of men.

Every excuse used to suggest women of the past were oppressed is either untrue or hyperbole. Women could vote in the 1800’s, women could and did work in the 1800’s, women could own land, etc. The lack thereof was more an issue of poverty over sex. But women were also held accountable for their choices, actions, and words, expected to have dignity and shame. Things which most of today’s females have completely lost.

If you compare life to a video came, Women have all the cheat codes and the game is set on easy mode.

Yes you can still play the game, do the missions, etc… but it’s not “fun”. You simply finish the game with zero effort. You get to be a witness to the story but never actually accomplish anything and therefore the game loses it’s joy.

If women stop making excuses for their choices and silencing those who point it out (as they tried with this rake the first time around) and actually take negative criticism and use it to make better choices… they will go back to becoming happier.

Most men do NOT have dangerous jobs. The percentage of men with the higly dangerous jobs the asker listed is few. Truck driving is the most dangerous occupation. Perhaps because of all those hours driving tired on the road. And it's populated predominantly by men. The others listed are dangerous, but I'd hazard to guess those occupations take up less than 10 percent of the male workforce. Someone get me a statistic that gives the correct numbers.

You simply can't throw out hazardous jobs to prove a point and then not have the facts about how many men occupy said jobs, which percentage of these men have families to support et al. It's imprecise writing which comes to an imprecise conclusion.

My opinion comes from a place where I feel equal in society and not oppressed; I've been blessed to live in a privileged country and grew up in a happy household; Im also single and have no dependants like children. Also, my opinion and values on this type of topic would align more with Jordan Peterson - im not some extreme feminist.

The paper you posted, THE PARADOX OF DECLINING FEMALE HAPPINESS, published 13 years ago, may lack some relevance today (but is still a good read with good points); it also draws off a lot of studies conducted back in the 70s-90s. It brought up potential factors impacting female happiness, such as;

* Sociologists argue that women participating in the workforce considered returning back to their family household commitments as a "second shift"
* And "life satisfaction previously meant "satisfaction at home" and has increasingly come to mean a combination of "satisfaction at home" and "satisfaction at work. Which may lead to a falling average satisfaction if difficult to achieve the same degree of satisfaction in multiple domains".

However, the paper actually doesn't end with a solid conclusion. Instead, it expressed that there isn't enough conclusive data available to do so.

In recent years, you could most certainly say men's happiness (mental health) is declining. Such as, male suicide rates have exponentially grown compared to female suicide rates. Maybe females are happier today OR have developed effective coping mechanisms due to the oppression faced in the past - the female mentality evolving from generation to generation.

Also, I hope people won't be so naive to think females have never been oppressed? Both men, women, the gender spectrum, races, cultures and religions have all faced oppression and significant hurdles at some stage - in most circumstances, resulting in a generational trauma, where today we still find ourselves having to mend.

I found your opinion piece to hold a lot of underlying resentment towards women. I am not coming from a mean place. I just feel like there is something deeply rooted in you that you need to confront and work through from a past experience - rather than having a blanket opinion about ALL women.

Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Idaho were the only states where women could vote. All of their suffrage laws were enacted AFTER 1869 to 1893. New York was the only state in the union that passed laws giving women considerable agency over property rights in marriage and that was AFTER 1848.

Other laws were very limited in scope and once married most women lost all rights to property, even if it was acquired from a deceased husband or father. Women also did not have rights to their children until later in the 19th century.

How do you arrive at these opinions? Personal experience? Are you quoting statistics? "Most" means more than 50%. You say gender roles are "logical." Which gender roles? Raising children? Ferrying them to and from school? Cooking? Cleaning house? Staying home and not working for pay?

The only possible "logical" gender role would be for a man with a high-paying job to spend most of his time working because his pay outdistances anything his spouse could make. But this would not preclude his SO from working. What if she gets great joy and satisfaction from her work? Arrangements can be made for child care while the parents are employed. And people who get joy from their work make satisfied parents.

It's a challenge to take on work responsibilities and balance them with home lives. People who contribute to the financial security of their families are not bored and have great dignity in their roles. it is a struggle to keep all these balls in the air, but it also shows your children how to create a balanced, good life. My parents did it and were great examples to my brother and I.

Nobody in my family was spoiled or privileged. We all pitched in to make our household run by the time we were teens and we had chores as younger kids.

We were also never bored. Our family life was rich. Maybe you know people who don't understand this and haven't passed it along. I've passed it to my young son (26) and one day I hope to influence his children. It's all in the manner you were raised. Some people aren't so lucky.

I did not state that the roles I mentioned are "bad" in any way. I think THEY are limiting and boring and none of them are full-time work unless you have many children. Staying home without pay PUTS a burden on a man who is the sole breadwinner to have a lucrative job that will support an entire family and a woman who is staying home.

I think with proper planning MOST modern homemaking jobs are easy. NOW, if a woman grows a family garden, interior decorates her home, covers the furniture, sews everybody's clothing, paints the interior and exterior of her home... does minor plumbing and electrical repairs, supervises workers who do major repairs, i. e. is the contractor for other such jobs, does financial planning for the couple, as well as retirement planning, THEN she's doing real home economics and THAT is a full-time job that she should earn a salary for devised by her worth. Stats say the average homemaker, NOT home economist, is worth $40K a year. I'd venture to say a home economist is worth twice that.

It's true. Men have been chosen to go to wars and for dangerous jobs. The only reason is women bear children and it only takes one man to impregnate many women. So many men can be lost in wars and the human race doesn't die out.

The reason most dangerous jobs you list are the role of men is that men have greater physical strength and have to use that strength on those jobs. Women, in general, have 30 percent less muscle mass than men, especially upper body strength. But most MEN don't perform those jobs EITHER. Those jobs represent a small percent of male occupations.

And we are talking about black WOMEN's rights since we're talking about women. Black women were prevented from voting in most Southern states well into the 20th century due to preventative voting "tests" that no white women had to take. I was raised to take care of myself and earn my own money. Menial tasks are a requirement of home life for everyone, men included, but to choose to be provided for over having your own agency and financial power seems an inferior choice to me. Fat, hairy, unattractive men have always allowed themselves to be seen in public in all levels of dress and undress: think of the beach, poolside, outdoor work, exercise. This counts the same for sex. Birth control, even the best birth control, can fail. That is why abortion was made available. There are very few women who've used abortion as a primary birth control method because it is hard on the body and has always been considered shameful to use.

Men need no birth control and often insist on urging women. to use none. And when a pregnancy occurs consider it a woman's problem, and/or disappear because their bodies are not involved or trapped in a pregnancy/birth that will affect their lives for the REST of their lives.

Being a homemaker is very light duty. Having control over finances and hovering over contractors (probably a man) doing actual work just makes you a control freak. Again not hard work. Women who bear the childbearing and most of the child-rearing responsibilities until VERY recently, are considered more precious solely because of that biological fact.

subjective quality of life measures have always been lower in females than in males as women have a higher trait neuroticism which makes them worry more (which is very usefull if your primary biological job is to rise childen) and if you add a major reccession to the mix, of course female happiness will decline more than that of men but they're both declining.

subjective quality of life measures are not globally correlated with objective measures of quality of life but in the western world, income correlates strongly with subjective qality of life measures so in the western world it is an explanation.

women indeed did get a major boost to subjective quality of life since the emancipation in the labour market.

also subjective wellbeing is U-shaped across ones individual life. being that thanks to demographic changes the average age in the usa is now 38 and older, that's approaching the bottom of the U, which additionally compounds the decline.

i took a look at the study design that you quoted. they only did a bivariate regression: Happiness= α + β Female (year)/Male (year)... this is terribly simplistic and allows for none of the conclusions you made. they basically just showed that happiness is declining. nothing else. nothing about possible reasons. it doesn't look at any of the relevant variables that pedict subjective quality of life and the fact that this paper even draws conclusion in the discussion is highly unscientific. and then they also quote a survey from 1999 where women reported more choices made them happyer... first off introducing more facts in your discussion part is not a way to do science. second off, asking people wha they think makes them happier is not how you measure what makes them happier and third off, a 10 year old survey is too old to quote in highly contemporary science.

quality of life especially if you look at individual life satisfaction is one of the best researched areas in social science. and if you do not have a good multi variate regression to figure out what correlated with your measure of "happiness" and what not, your study isn't worth the paper it's written on.

the measurement of subjective quality of life is highly complex and figuring out what has an influence and what not requires to look at all the relevant factors. not looking at 2 numbers in a statistic and then guessing what caused them... this isn't how it works.

so tl;dr: the paper you quoted is garbage, which i'm not blamin you for but the conclusion you drew are highly questionable. it is your opinion and you're entiteled to your opinion but it has nothing to do with science.

fact is, that being occupied in a job makes people more happy generally speaking. men as well ans women. plus i have personally researched the impact of female occupation on life satisfaction and more women being occupied makes men and women of a given society more satisfied with their life. but the negative effect is that it leads to less children, causing demographic change, which causes an economic decline which then makes people less happy.

If you ask me, it sounds like a lot of men are more upset and declining in happiness when it comes to dating these days. Didn't they just release that article not to long ago about men being more lonely and single these days? I'm constantly seeing or hearing men complain more about only fans and online dating.

Before women had any rights, we had to depend on our spouses. Often times women where expected to get with men who had money, power, and status in the olden times.

A woman who married a poor man was a death/poverty sentence for her and her children. If her husband got hurt and couldn't work, got suddenly ill and died, or took off on his family, left a woman with no right to work in a very vulnerable position. The "gold digging" lifestyle was accepted and pushed more than ever in those times, a man KNEW if he wanted a certain woman to be his wife he had to prove to her and the family that he was financially worthy if he wanted her hand in marriage.

This is the same expectation that are now frowned upon by men and tell us its wrong to want, but now that we have the option to work aka not be a "gold digger", men are still not happy it seems. At this point It's gotten confusing. Are we goldiggers for wanting a financial well man, a man to depend on or are we too independent spoiled children?

Online dating used to be okay back in the days, now it's just a broken system for the majority of men, this doesn't necessary mean that we are so unhappy because of it. I've been alone most of my life and I'm perfectly fine with it, I don't feel incomplete without a woman, I don't even get offended when friends or relatives asking me why I don't have a girlfriend. Those that are very frustrated and unhappy are the men that just wanted to play the good old role of a head of a house, a husband and provider, you will probably call them dinosaurs of our modern time, and they're screwed because what the system is nowadays. They're incompatible in this system.
You are right about women back in the days, but that was a long time ago and it doesn't mean that women were necessary oppressed or victims, it was just role division. The system was that way during those times.
As for now sure you can work, sure you can do whatever you like, buy whatever you like and date whoever you want, sure you can be construction workers, truck drivers or plumbers if you like, well maybe these are not the best examples when it comes to female preferences but still, you can. This is freedom and abundance alright, but doesn't necessary mean that it'll lead to happiness. Our nature is hard-coded within us and not following it leads to bitterness sooner or later for many, both women and men.

i have been a hard worker since my first grass cutting job at 7. i work an amazing job, long hours, cook, clean, have a car a home, and i worked for it soley myself at my age, i have zero family for support.

before i get into this, it is not based off any female but the few i personally know in life--

there is something to be said about your title but i can give you my perspective based off so called friends, to me nothing but acquaintances i have, that are flat out lazy, do not like to work, do not keep jobs more then a few weeks, have 3,4,5 by different men and unhappy with their situations. live in run trailers the way they live actually shows more then they think having a filthy home with bugs, trash, food, in shambles and stuff? shows you are not only lazy but have zero motivation and no self respect. jump from man to man expecting to meet some yale grad to take care of them and all their kids the rest of their lives. they are unhappy and create friction in others lives and or drama to fill that void, while sitting on a phone all day waiting for the next guy, next job etc

so i have seen the self entitlement and or the behavior you have described it does exist with a lot of females but not all of us are like that, i work my ass off and love to work and i have a lot to show for it, to me that says everything about me as a female.

It's truly a controversial and strongly biased topic from either gender. There are a plethora of factors involved and every individual focuses on the factors that she or he benefits or gets his or her motives executed from.

It makes sence that women are happier when they follow what nature tells them. (Housewife). I mean the studies don't lie. I also think there is a lot of negative stigma around women being housewives esspecially from other women that needs to change.

The myth of the “wage gap” is based on IRS reports on earnings of men vs women with NO consideration for the differences between choices men and women make in their jobs and careers. Therefore, where that misinformation suggests women make 21 cents on the dollar less than men, that ACTUALLY means women are paying AT LEAST 21% less in taxes than men. This doesn’t account for the fact that over two-thirds of people NOT paying into the system at all due to “earned income credits” are female. You have a lot of reading to do before you should feel so confident posting publicly on this issue.

Most women, not all women are bored, because they have nothing to fight for and who to fight with on most basic things, such as the bills, laundry, chores, meals and social matters. They are all independent now, which there is nothing wrong with that. It's just that, it's maybe a little too much independence turns to complacency and you resent yourself for it later. I have so many female friends and family who are always complaining and claim that they have been taken advantage of and h never treated fair, but the problems in their life are from their own poor choices. They’ve lived very good lives and were given cars in high-school, college was paid for, job opportunities, always had boyfriends, got money from their parents, free phones with their bills paid for..
Most I’ve had was my parents allowed me to stay at home after I graduated and my mom co-signed for my first used car. It didn’t bother me too much growing up because that’s how it was. But more and more I’m realized how I got screwed and it’s all somehow still my fault.

It's true that studies show women are less happy now than in the past, although to say the change is massive is an overstatement.

But regardless, yes, women are generally less happy today than their counterparts were decades ago.

Men's happiness in general is about the same, but their satisfaction with today's women is much lower.
