Nope! Unless the individual believes they did wrong and wants to be a better person
No, but its supposed to be punishment for crime, not necessarily rehabilitation. I don't know if the have a good enough psychological understanding of criminals to create programmes of rehabilitation.
No. In the US prison is a joke and criminals get celebrated while others now live in fear.
Seems like in California they do.
It could do, with a little effort. Most people, and most governments, aren't interested in rehabilitation. It's all about punishment for them.
Punishing someone can change their behaviour, but not always for the better.
Probably not too many, no. But then, that's not really the point is it? The point of prison is to 1) keep the scumbags off the street so that civilized society is a nicer place, and 2) punish people for wrongdoing. Prison does both those things well.
The US prison system is now our defacto mental health system. Inmates learn how to become better criminals inside.
Not just the American prison system, any prison system. A high school teacher of mine was chaplain of the Rebibbia prison, the second prison in Rome during the first part of the PhD, in the second he taught at school. He said that with what he learned from prisoners if he were not the priest he would be a thief, he would certainly be richer.
I mean sitting in time out made a few kids self reflect and do better so yea i can see the same working for some adults
Prison make things worse.. I mean us prison is really to kill the criminals not rehabilitation. On the contrary Sweden prison is like a hotel. They believe that if human treated with dignity and respect, they will not break the law. American prison is hell.
The problem with that is that going to prison would be no deterrent for committing crime. And then you would have every homeless committing crime to get free room and board.
Not in the US since the main goal is to punish you while keeping you away from general public. We also have privet prisons, which means prisons are used to punish prisoners while making the owners rich.
No of course not. But it keeps the general public safer when some people are locked up.
Very thoughtful discourse on the subject. It is a very complicated issue and I personally do not think it works as a rehabilitation mechanism. It is a punishment tool.
It depends on which prison system you're talking about. The US prison system doesn't try to rehabilitate, and so it doesn't.
Very few, unfortunately. Recidivism rates for felons tends to be extremely high.
Not sure about the percentages, but it also depends why they are in their, like drug traffickers, it's probably only 15% rehabilitation, and people like Ted Bundy, had no chance, just stick em into the electric chair and fry em.
I have seen and heard of men who live in Prison in and out, they say how there is uncomfortable, plus prison won’t change individuals but make them worst
Seems to look that way.
Well you can't expect prisons to rehabilitate anyone, if they're pretty much private businesses...
Well if they can't handle the prisoners then they should have their contract cancelled. For mild offences, like drugs, they should be put in minimum security prisons. Murderers and rapists get maximum security.
Prisons should be state run with money from taxes. Private businesses won't care about habilitation and you can't make them. So if you make profitability the main goal, rehabilitation and "the greater good for society" will fall off.
Sadly.
Depends on the country, but it's foremost a deterrent and punishment.
Not when prison is a for profit industry. It’s just built on a model to keep customers coming back and keeping them in for as long as possible.
I hav been hired a few times to go to prison n wht i saw was nothing nice tbh
the solution would be - follow the law, because eliminating prison or making it "better" will reduce the deterrent effect and result in more innocent victims
