people use their free speech n video platforms to paraphrase wrongly or pretend to know his "motives" what "he wants" instead of quotes! really shapiro said something different and smart and beneficial.

same as frequently, headlines about what trump "said" but didn't actually say. luckily they also usually bring trump words... so you can see, that he never said that thing that they criticized!

when i read what trump "said", i jump ahead looking for quote marks, some hid but some quoted, then compare to headline. not same!

headlines should be like this picture but then liberals know they can't win!

2, what shapiro actualy said, he must speak for himself in picture so go to shapiro podcast. or i quote in quotes, "BEN SHAPIRO: Let's be real about this, it's insane that we haven't raised the retirement age in the United States." that was what he actually said. but what if age caused limitations? disability, obviously that exception wouldn't lose retirement benefits. obviously!

3, some reasons to change retirement age: unless you have some sort of health problem retirement is just not a good idea. it is not justified but can be harmful. a real bad idea.

These are reasons to raise retirement age, including my own retirement until "life expectancy age minus 2" like age 78. and if you smoke... tough luck! you did that to yourself!

Almost nobody can afford to retire at 65, in around 9 years When when the Government runs out of money in the Social Security inflationary fire place, fewer still will be able to afford to retire at that age or even much younger.

It is unfortunate but if that 15% of people's income had actually been invested rather than stuffed in the goverment fireplace it might be worth 2-3 times what is now there and people might actually be able to afford to retire.

It is probably unrealistic for Republicans to fix this democrat catastrophe at this point. We are kind of forced to just let it happen and people find our democrats have been lying to them for nearly 100 years at that point.

I am 69 years old, healthy and active, and still working full time. My fiancée is 60 years old so I will probably work for at least five more years. I'm sure it will be better than staying at home and talking to the cat! And I enjoy what I do.

First, a correction.

But we HAVE raised it. What they call the full retirement age currently increases 2 months per year. For those born in 1954 or earlier, it was 66. For those born in 1955, add two months. For those born in 1956, add another two months. This continues up to birth year 1960 when the age reaches 67.

So my full retirement age was 66 and 4 months.

The minimum retirement age remains at 62. As the full retirement age increases, it means the penalty for early retirement at 62 increases.

Retirement after the full retirement age gives a bonus. So you can wait until age 70 and get a fair amount more in SS.

Both the penalty and bonus change by the month, not the year. So if you wait one more month to retire, you might get $10-20 more a month for SS.

Life expectancy doesn't work the way you might expect. The life expectancy that you always hear about is the life expectancy from birth. The calculations for SS do not use that. They use life expectancy from your current age.

It might seem counter-intuitive. We know that life expectancy is increasing. But the way SS does it, the older you are now means your life expectancy increases, not decreases.

So for example:
For someone who is now 20 years old, their life expectancy at birth was higher than mine. But today, my life expectancy is higher than someone who is 20.

To explain that, I am 47 years older than a 20 year old. There is a chance the 20 year old will die in the next 47 years. But I have already survived those years. That makes my life expectancy higher than theirs.

The life expectancy used by SS works the same way. So someone just a couple years older than me has a slightly higher life expectancy than me, because I could die in the next two years. I think it's only a month or two difference though.

SS benefits are calculated using this life expectancy. That's true for both the base amounts, and the penalties and bonuses for early or delayed retirement.

While the life expectancy from birth has increased dramatically over the years, the expectancy for someone already in their 60s, 70s or 80s has not increased nearly so much.

With better health care and better diet, it's far more common for a person to live into their 90s or even reach 100. But people are still getting pretty worn out at much the same age as before. Just because they might live to an older age, doesn't mean they can or want to work longer.

This is especially true of people doing any kind of physical work. That doesn't mean just heavy labor, but even being on their feet all day. Life expectancy is increasing. I don't know if the age when you start to lose muscle mass increases. I don't know if the age you lose stamina or lung capacity increases. My guess is that if it's increasing, it's not by much.

So what we have is a weird combination of things. People are "starting" life at an older and older age. They are spending far more years in formal education than they used to. They are moving out of their parents house later than they used to. They are getting married and having kids later than they used to.

Then on the other end, they are living longer, but not necessarily in a way that they are capable or want to keep working, especially in physically demanding jobs.

You can divide life into three main stages: preparing for life, the prime working years, retirement years. Preparing for life, and retirement years are both increasing. The increased time spent preparing for life is digging into the prime working years. I have to emphasis the word "prime".

All of this combines to mean we are spending more years not working, and less years working.

This has been known for a long long time. At least five generations of politicians and voters have known about this. But very little has been done to change it. Yes, the full retirement age is increasing a little. But that is not nearly enough.

There is one last thing. The maximum retirement age. There is not really a maximum age, but there is a maximum bonus if you delay retiring. I'm all for raising that age. It's optional, and allows people to continue working as long as they want.

Whoops, one more last thing. There are also some weird rules about IRAs and other retirement accounts. There is a minimum age that you can withdraw from those accounts. I forget the age, but it's in the late 50s. In other words, you can withdraw from retirement accounts at a younger age than you can get SS.

There is also an age when you must withdraw from those accounts. You don't hear about those two ages in political rhetoric, but they can have a HUGE impact on retirement benefits. Mostly because of federal taxes, but it also affects state and local taxes, and even property taxes.

It's quite possible that these tax consequences have more effect on net retirement benefits than SS. But it's something you don't hear much about unless you happen to be old enough to realize that you should have understood this 30 years ago and planned for it. There are a lot of weird unknown rules, some of which can seriously screw you over. The age when you must withdraw from retirement accounts is the one you really need to do some math on and know all the obscure rules. These are not high income rules, they affect average people.

You missed the point. There are at least TWO different life expectancies and you need to use the right one. Life expectancy for the purposes of retirement benefits for me is around 85. For you it's around 83. So your current life expectancy is two years less than mine.

The distinction between life expectancy at birth and the life expectancy at your current age is not playing with terminology. The difference is VERY significant when it comes to how much you will get from SS.

I have been a health nut all my life. I am planning on living a good long time and plan on being healthy in my retirement so that I can do some of the things I always wanted to do. Screw Ben Shapiro. If he had a job that he did not like or was physically challenging he would have a different opinion. Instead he has a soft touch doing a radio show.
