Women have every right men do but I'm sure it happens sometimes and I truly hate that it does. Those posts you linked to honestly sound like a bunch of people with attention issues. Hell, don't date douche bags and maybe you won't need to form a stereotypical opinion on all guys based on a couple! I can't stand the "all guys are the same" BS, I mean [rant suppressed]. Anywho, yes in some cases, SOME guys are dominant over women and like to show it and they don't have a care in the world about the poor girl they are hurting. It is quite regretful we are all compared to this...But there are guys being abused as well so its like everything else, not a one dimensional problem. Feminism is what it is. I neither support or discredit it. We're Evil Rapist? Haha I must be a rebel because there is only one thing a rapist needs in my opinion... and I dont want one ;)
In some places and ways. I do not subscribe to the point of view that absolute equality is worth the banning of words and other breaches of the freedom of speech. If feminism is the belief that "we want nothing to inhibit a person, because of his or her sex, from any opportunity that is provided to a member of the opposite sex," then I'm all on board. Too many so-called feminists have fabricated statistics or tried to control speech for me to think of it as really noble in the present time, in the United States.
I like to think of "Feminism" and "Women's Rights" as separate things. The attempt to ban the word 'bossy' was something I believe is something completely beneath the dignity of people who legitimately want the sexes to be treated equally.
Honestly, if there was a women's rights group that had a structured set of rules it would work because trying to have a movement based off of an ideology is what is causing the confusion we are in today.
Yes, it's very hard to respond to such accusations as "this character is sexist" when there isn't a universally accepted standard of what is "sexist" versus "not sexist." It isn't to the advantage of, say, a video game director to change a character's appearance when that director will likely get flak anyway for failing to meet another, nonreconcilable standard that other feminists hold sacred.
A lot of women want everyone to believe that they're oppressed by men. In some countries this is true, but in the U.S. it is entirely false. If anything women have substantially more power than men do now on average.
By controlling sex, they can manipulate men to pursue them and do many things for them in order to try and get said sex/relationships. Women hold all the cards in this regard and also have the exact same rights that men have. They also have the power to choose whether or not they have children (most of the time), and most women can wait for their ideal man that they like. Most guys have to settle for a woman they don't really like since men obviously have fewer options than women.
Women have used this power throughout the ages, particularly in noble political areas, but now it is especially prevalent because of the women's rights movement.
Feminism is still needed to an extent (sadly) because there is a lot of oppression going on in the world, specifically including America. There are a lot of women who are being oppressed and honestly, it has a huge deal to do with ignorance. Some men can’t climb out of their little box and actually see the real world for what it is today- their usually so ignorant and therefore this ignorance leads them to oppressing women.
Personally, I never let myself be oppressed by anyone, male or female alike. However, I did often find myself in situations in which I was dealing with guys who were oppressive but it was always due to their obvious ignorance and shallow-mindedness. So yes, we do need females who are strong and know how to stand for their rights without allowing themselves to be stepped on like doormats.
Sometimes this behavior roots back to cultural values- actually, it is the case a lot of times. For example, in my parents’ culture, the men are oppressive and feel like they have full rights over the women (physically, mentally, emotionally.) She does the housework, she does his bidding, and she fulfills all his sexual needs. There are a lot of men in the culture that aren’t like that, thankfully, but this is the majority case. It’s messed up, honestly… And you know what, I don’t care what the culture is. If I get married to someone from my culture, I fully intend to base our marriage on the proper rights and values that it should be based on. It’s so essential for there to be a connection and a relationship of trust and love to be established before you start having sex.. that’s what marriage is about!
Okay I kinda went off track. But this all does go back to the same topic :)
Kimmel argues that among various other flaws, the CTS is particularly vulnerable to reporting bias because it depends on asking people to accurately remember and report what happened during the past year. Men tend to underestimate their use of violence, while women tend to overestimate their use of violence. Simultaneously men tend to overestimate their partner's use of violence while women tend to underestimate their partner's use of violence. Thus, men will likely overestimate their victimization, while women tend to underestimate theirs.
*-Concerning the Fiebert list I found serious academic criticism: In a 2002 review of the research however Michael Kimmel found that violence is instrumental in maintaining control and that more than 90% of "systematic, persistent, and injurious" violence is perpetrated by men. He points out that most of the empirical studies that Fiebert reviewed used the same empirical measure of family conflict, i.e., the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) as the sole measure of domestic violence and that many of the studies noted by Fiebert discussed samples composed entirely of single people younger than 30, not married couples.
I do not understand why women want to be like men. Women have their strengths as do men. but for some reason women feel that their strengths are of less significance than men' strengths and have do things men do. My opinion agree or disagree, men are the leaders and most men have not used their responsibility wisely which has led to a society where women are exploited because men are not using their strengths in the right way. My views will most likely differ from many others because I believe in creation.
No. Women have it great right now. They can either choose to stay at home and be a housewife or have a career and make just as much if not more than a guy. America which used to be a manufacturing nation is now a service nation which benefits women more actually. And America's next president most likely will be a woman. Hillary Clinton is the favorite to become the next president. The problem with feminism is that some women have used it to gain superiority over men, when its purpose is to promote a truly equal society. True equality across the board means everything from fighting on the front line to making the first move.
I can understand when women weren't allowed to vote or if they weren't allowed to go to school or choose what job they wanted (though there should be a few exceptions now in my opinion), but what are they being oppressed on now? Honestly, I think that other stuff is oppressed-lite. They were still loved and taken care of then. People act like women were beaten and men were sitting in cushy office positions. Most jobs were laborious and they fought wars. They were chivalrous and in general tried to protect women and children which we still try to do today. Feminists try to portray our grandfathers and further back as if they were Ariel Castro, and they think of us as a couple of steps below it. They are unreasonable.
I get kind of tired of saying why women of today aren't oppressed. I could go down that list of tweets and explain why almost every one of them are dolts.
They are so over the top with some of the stuff it's not even funny.
I shouldn't have to hold my car keys in hand like a weapon & check over my shoulder every few seconds when I walk at night #YesAllWomen
I check my shoulder too and I'm a guy.
#yesallwomen because "I have a boyfriend" is more likely to get a guy to back off than "no", because they respect other men more than women
Women are generally more vulnerable than men they are smaller and weaker so of course its safer when you have a boyfriend or even just a friend with you.
The problem is women are trying to fight nature. Men were hunters and gatherers and we naturally seek out women. I'm not talking about stalking but we check them out only select few guys stalk or verbally harass women.
First of all let me say that the girls on here are going to say men are extremely oppressive. That's the internet for you. You could post a pic of your grandmother on Twitter or something and people would say "I hope that B**** dies". Or something to that extent. You have to take some issues with a grain of salt when it comes to online
As for the REAL WORLD. Media is enormous now and they cover a wide variety of things. No longer can I turn on the TV, go to ESPN, and just see a ball game and coverage of that ball game. Now you've got the media during coverage on what a athlete says on Twitter, or a fight so and so was in, or so and so is gay, etc. This is one example of tons of different media. Someone can't burp without the media knowing.
Now to slide a little bit away from that. I know rape and murder are two different things, but they are both bad. The rates of murder in America over the years have not changed a lot. It increases and decreases...continued...
...Maybe it's starting to now I don't know but one thing I do know is that we notice murders waaay more now. You hear about it everyday. The media bombards you with stories on murder all the time. I believe the same could be said for rapist stories. The media bombards us with it constantly. It seems like it has increase but maybe it hasn't.
Of course in today's society more people are more open to things that usual. You've got kids who are hitting puberty at 12 years old. You've got little girls having kids as early as 9. Sexual things that would be bizarre back in the day aren't now.
One last point. Our society due to media and other things are overly sensitive. Again you say "OMG" over someone like Michael Sam kissing his BF and your suspended from practice. Feminism and the LBGT movement is the spearhead of society's sensitivity. Now if you disagree with a gay guy your homophobic. Now if you argue with a woman your a sexist, a misogynist, a rapist. ...continued...
This is the new world we live in and it will only get worst.
In the past women have been oppressed. In some countries they are still oppressed. Women weren't (or aren't) allowed to leave the house. They have to wear certain things. They have to stay quit unless spoken to. They have to take care of kids and clean all day. They can't drive. etc. the list goes on. Yet that's just the countries who are still stuck in the old world.
Here in America? It's the opposite. If you hit me nothing happens if I hit you I'm going to jail. Me and a girl are looking for a promotion. We have virtually the same qualities job wise. Same resume split right down the middle. Both of us to well at a interview. However, the girl is a single lady around the same age as the boss and is very attractive. Who gets the job?
Maybe I'm too ambiguous for my own good, but one thing I do know is that women oppression in today's society has lessened.
The reason why women overreact is because they can. It's because of how sensitive society is now. Double standards typically work in the favor of women, because the male double standards are seen as bad. Such as guys having more job opportunities than women as opposed to me getting more jail time for sexual assault than you if you were to rape someone. Just my 2 cents.
No, there are always going to be some individuals that are sexist, but clearly women aren't being oppressed. Men have given women pretty much anything they asked for. It is just that modern feminism is based around twisting everything around to make men out to be the bad guy, even when we are the ones that have it worse. Like how some feminists are now making the claim that women at home suffer more during war than the male soldiers that are being traumatized, crippled, or killed. This twisting of the facts to always make women into the victim while ignoring male contributions, sacrifices, and plight no matter what has happened is what modern feminism is all about.
I am not from America or UK. But yes, I think feminism is still needed. Not to the extent where every man is seen as a rapist. That's just stupid. But to say that women are safe even in your first world countries is equally stupid (no offence). All those tweets are not by mythical creatures. They are those women who live in US and UK like you do and have faced oppression and fear.
If you haven't been harassed then you are really lucky. And I hope you remain so :)

Yes I agree with your statements. I wasn't trying to imply that no women are ever harrassed and that those stories were made-up. I just wanted to see how common those things are. Thanks for answering:)
I think part of the confusion on this issue is that a lot of people (myself included) view this as an issue of Crime & Punishment. Statistically, crime whether as victim or perpetrator is mostly a male experience (women are less likely to be either, in the end).
Obviously we want people regardless of gender to feel safe on the streets at any hour of the day. That's a good goal.
Pedantic, where rape is concerned, it would be incorrect to say that crime is mostly a male experience as victim. Guys get harassed too of course. But statistically everyone would agree women become the target.
For other crimes, I haven't seen the stats on them so I can't comment much on that.
what about when women falsely accuse a man of raping her and it's found out that she lied. there is no punishment for the woman and the guy's reputation is ruined rather it's true or not. what I'm getting at is both genders are oppressed.
No, I don't believe so. I think we have gender issues that need to be fixed on both sides. I don't think we are in a state of oppression, in the united states. I think we have ALL of the basic rights, however I think we really need to take a look at the "violent masculinity" that we are teaching our boys to embrace which creates a culture that allows and accepts violence against people. I believe that a lot of the violence we see today could be fixed if we raised our boys differently, but no, we are not oppressed by men.
Feminism is more about fixing issues that absolutely affect women, but also affect men! We're trying to change small things, such as, when a woman is raped not ask what she was wearing. Or if a man was raped, not ignore it because of the expectation that he "enjoyed it".
I do not think that women are oppressed in America, so I don't think there's a need for feminism. I agree with the anonymous poster who said he thinks women have a slight edge over men in most matters. Like you, I have never felt even slightly oppressed by men. And I certainly have never been harrassed like the woman in the tweet suggests. I'm certain there are plenty of females who have never been harrassed by men.
Oooh. Interesting! You and I could either be great friends or absolutely loathe each other because I can turn anything into a pro-capitalism rant, haha.
It annoys me that I see so many females bring up the wage gap. That data is so skewed usually. The real differences in salaries between a male a female in the same field is minuscule and can be attributed to things other than sex.
As far as violence against women, that's still the major issue here.
Since you specifically mentioned America, I don't think so. Not at all. In fact, women often hold a slight edge over men in most matters in America. But if you hadn't specified a particular country, I would have said that in general, women the world over are still being oppressed by men (although the degree of this oppression varies greatly).

Interesting. Yeah, I personally think there is a difference between America, and the world as a whole. That's why I specified that I wanted to know what people thought about women in America.
Yeah right! But in general, i do feel that all over the world (including America), most men still intrinsically feel that they're superior to women in some way, although they don't really 'oppress' women to get their point across. For example, when I casually mentioned to an American guy that women today can do everything that was previously considered 'men's domain', he replied "Not really, women can't pee while standing".
Thanks! I have always stood for the equality of women (not feminism). In fact, I personally feel that women are superior to men because they have the capability to bear children and develop a strong bond with them, which men can never experience or even know about! This ability of women effectively negates whatever other trivial advantages men may have over women. :)
Oppressed I don't believe is the correct word. Women are not being oppressed by men (i would say the vast majority in America there is always outlying cases of anything.) There is a big difference in being to walk down a street alone at night and fear/fear not the possibility of being raped, but that is not oppression. Women have come a long way in American society I would say where there needs to be progress is in Congressional men that try to invade and control a women's body, that is the closest thing to oppression I have seen
I grew up in a rural area with a misogynistic father. Likewise, there are still lots of guys I personally know who think it's ok to "trap" a female into sex, as long as the guy doesn't hit her.
I think we're in a transitiyional phase.
I'd also like us to work together to figure out what to do with unskilled men now that we've shipped most factory jobs overseas. Also to give people (men and women) access to better mental health treatment.
I think many women are in board with multiple causes and there is only a small minority of "evil feminists" that are exaggerated by the opposition and our ridiculously sensationalist media.
yup. I took a women studies course and hey are still being degraded and oppressed simply through magazines. so much code to decipher from a simple picture. a lot of people miss it, that's how deceptive the images are. worst part is the women modeling for the magazines don't know how they're contributing to the degradation of their gender.
Everyone could potentially think they are oppressed. Women by men. Blacks by whites. Singles in general. I could make a case that white men are being oppressed. Here in America we are all equals so if you're feeling oppressed then that's on you to handle. In some other countries I'd agree that women really are oppressed.
Men and women are not equal and that's a good thing. I don't want to see women in tuxedos and they don't want to see me in a dress.
The irony is that telling them that will cause them to hate you and call you "privileged" for not falling for their victimizing games. It's a huge thing with a lot of women now. They claim they are "strong" and "independent" but whenever an unfair issue comes their way. They turn to victimizing themselves for an advantage.
@Theguyoverthere - ironically, someone said exactly that to me recently, for exactly the same point bDizzie made about men and women not being equal being a good thing. Maybe you're on to something?

Only relevant thing you posted is the violence against women.
Yeah, and even that wasn't right:

Adam, I looked at the references you gave.
That first site (operated by a California pastor John Hamel) seems rather doubtful.
The CDC disagrees with you on domestic violence. There are more male victims. Yet, fewer women get prosecuted for their violence.
Don't forget that due to obvious differences in physical force violence by men against women tends to have REAL serious consequences.

what about when women falsely accuse a man of raping her and it's found out that she lied. there is no punishment for the woman and the guy's reputation is ruined rather it's true or not.
what I'm getting at is both genders are oppressed.
Or if a man was raped, not ignore it because of the expectation that he "enjoyed it".
how is violence not oppressive.
That's a really good point. I guess I didn't think my argument all the way through
I do not think that women are oppressed in America, so I don't think there's a need for feminism.

Yeah you have a point there. That's why I wanted to ask this. Thanks:)
Best answer in my opinion :)
aww thanks :)
Answer this please: In your own opinion what do you think is worse, physical abuse? or emotional abuse?
opression: prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control.
"
the state of being subject to unjust treatment or control.
mental pressure or distress.
Just curios..How is the word oppression, not applicable to threat of and or the act of rape.
Practically thinking of opression having a lingering feeli mg in the back of your mind hardly applies
I agree
yup. I took a women studies course and hey are still being degraded and oppressed simply through magazines. so much code to decipher from a simple picture. a lot of people miss it, that's how deceptive the images are. worst part is the women modeling for the magazines don't know how they're contributing to the degradation of their gender.
Lol how much did you spend on this magazine reading class
1 semester lol.
