Before we start, I'm mixed race. So I was scrolling through my feeds on various social media sites and I keep seeing this trend. People constantly saying, "I want mixed raced babies because they are prettier," or something else similar. I get it, mixed race babies look "exotic" and cute, but think all babies are absolutely beautiful. However, there comes a point where wishing turns a bit creepy. Some people obesse over these kids like they were collectibles. I talk in the third person because despite me being mixed, I don't "pass." I think some people get deduled and think a child that is mixed race is going to look perfectly like both parents. Sometimes, like me, we swing a lite to far to one side or another. As for me, I wouldn't mind a BABY who was as dark as my grandfather (who was dark skin but israeli) with melanin poppin' or who looked like my other grandfather (who is Italian.)
What I see on this thread is a little sickening. I thought when one has a child they wish for them to be happy and healthy. I've noticed, I'd say within the past 15 years, people are strategically seeking out partners in hopes of having "pretty" mixed babies. This is further perpetuated by the media's objectification of mixed-race people and the false narrative that they represent social progress. What it represents is social ignorance and lack of depth. I think it's ridiculous and ignorant to have a baby with someone solely for this reason and then have the audacity to go online and normalize this behavior. We, indeed, live in a very superficial society with no values to speak of. What's the difference between women and men who are seeking mixed-raced babies and those who practiced Eugenics? Is this not the same thought-process Hitler used to justify the erasure of the jews seeking to create the "perfect human"? Sounds far-fetched but it's actually not. Mixed-raced children are NOT a handbag or an accessory for your aesthetic appeal nor should they hold the burden of social progress. They are children who need to be nurtured in a loving environment as ANY child. Furthermore, when seeking out a partner SOLELY in the hopes that your child does not have your features... what does that say about your own self-worth? Low self-esteem is what that amounts to.
Omg girl yes. I am 75% black and 25% Latina (grandma is Latina) and my boyfriend is German and Polish. My "friend" saw a picture of me and my boyfriend and at first she was like "Oh girl he is cute, congratulations on the new found love you seems so happy with him." Of corse I said "Thank you :)" the next phrase that spit out her mouth "You're going to have such pretty babies." Then I asked "what do you mean?" Then in her words she said "Your babies are going to be half white. You know your babies are going to be light skinned with good hair that falls down their back and pretty eyes. Some mixed babies come out looking more like their white mom or dad so they have straight white people hair and you can't tell they are black. In fact, let me find me a white guy so I can have pretty mulatto kids. Does he have a brother or a cousin? Doesn't matter how they look as long as they are white!" I was having mixed emotions of anger, confusion and sadness :(
I'm mixed as well, black and Asian. I hear this so much and nothing makes me angrier. Mixed people are fetishized because they are different or exotic or whatever. This world is very racist so you will notice most famous or "conventionally" attractive people tend to have more Anglo features even if they aren't white. Mixed babies usually refer to being mixed with black. Colorism is a huge factor. Mixed babies are ethnic and exotic but they lack some of the distinctly black characteristics. This is somehow better? I honestly can't understand it. I get treated like an animal at the zoo with people constantly viewing me as a science project. I think people like to collect exotic and rare things and that includes people.
I know what you're talking about. It seems like some people think mixed race babies are superior. Or that being mixed makes them automatically beautiful. I disagree with this. All babies are cute and I've seen some mixed race people who are ugly. I'm fine with people who say they're okay with having mixed race children. But I don't like the ones who say they want to have them because they're prettier. It's like you're putting other children down, just because they're not mixed.
First things first, when people say "mixed race babies", they are referring to a particular kind of look. That look deemed exotic and is placed in a pedestal.
Secondly, if you don't fit that kind of look, they don't care because how you look is not what they mean when they said "mixed race babies".
Look, we all make sweeping generalisations when it comes to talking about the social construct "race". To re-emphasize, people have their preconceptions when they describe people of different races and you are just going to have to live with that.

i think many feel that the skin tone and hair of mixed babies are very desirable. perhaps it's a blending of features too. my wife is white and i'm black and people do tend to go ape over our daughter... but i tend to think she's the cutest thing in the world too
i imagine for many it may also be a sort of psychological appreciation for interracial relationships and the implications that it demonstrates the erosion of racial divides

Sadly, not all mixed race kids are blessed like that. My hair is very kinky by my sister's is very wavy. Plus, she's way better looking than me.
I agree with @RedThread. Apart from that, I just think mixed-race babies are incredibly beautiful. I have seen couples where one or both of the parents were ugly but the mixed baby was still cute. In my country, there is no obsession over mixed-race babies as there aren't many mixed-race couples yet. I happen to be in a relationship with an East Asian girl and so we will have mixed-race babies. I'm very happy about that, despite the fact that I never deliberately planned it this way.
People are more likely to want mixed babies because they:
Personally like racial diversity, and therefore wouldn't mind/would like their kids to be mixed
One or both of the child's parents have genes that they would want the child to have. If one parent has short and curly hair while the other has mid-straight hair, the results would be thick, straight hair.. which honestly looks nice on guys.
Or, they want to be petty and televise their liking to diversity or other fetishized races such as Asian women or black men.

Then it would appear that they do it just to show off their new mixed race child. Kind of like a black guy saying "hey black women! I'm dating a Latina, and we're having a baby". 😒

Truth is mixed babies can turn out in so many different ways, far more variety than two typical blonde swedes etc having a baby. There is not one specific look that mixed babies will have, and people really need to understand that. This mixed race obsession is only big because of social media I think.
I don't get it either. I know a woman who had a biracial child b/c she saw them while on vacation and found them beautiful... so, she found a white guy and had a baby... that's creepy af and reckless. As a biracial person, it's not flattering to have people fetishize my skin or say it's better than another type. That's wrong and again, creepy. People should be with people b/c they get along, attraction, etc... not to have cute babies or b/c of some creepy fetish.
Yeah, people make it weird. Mixed race people tend to be very healthy as they have a very diverse set of genes, and that translates into highly symmetrical features. White people are supposed to have the smallest gene pool (which makes sense, as white people make up less than 30% of the global population) so quite frankly they need some injection of new genes.

When people think mixed-race, they think white-black immediately. And although I am half white, half black, I don't look stereotypically mixed. I have paler skin that tans easily, green eyes and was brown/blonde curly hair (I was actually born with blonde hair that got darker). Now I really don't see the big deal about mixed kids in general even if you're a white bread person who's grown up around white bread people. Most of the world has darker skin, dark hair and eyes. Most mixed people tend to have basic, dominant black hair/black eyes like the vast majority of the planet. I got super lucky to have true rare features that white people generally have-colored eyes/hair.
It's silly really.. As if there ain't babies of what is perceived as "single raced" babies can't be pretty, or cute.. It's a big fetish really.. Many people in society have a fetish for "mixed" people.. Lol..
I'm a bit apprehensive about having children with my boyfriend because they would be mixed. First I think it's difficult for the child to identify with both cultures, then there's social acceptance (in the case we don't live in a society used to mixed people) and then I, personally, actually think many mixed people aren't that beautiful... so it's a matter of luck too, not all are beatiful, same as in every race.
Just saying that not all people are obsessed with that, it just may look like an attractive world.

A dark skinned lady I worked with has been pregnant twice since I have known her. Here first baby's father was mixed with Latino and black. While she was pregnant she and her black friends went on and on about how beautiful her mixed baby was going to be. Then her second baby's father was black. While she was pregnant... she talked about how dark her baby was going to be and how she wish it wasn't going to be. Both children are beautiful... I really dont see that much difference in them.

People want designer babies these days. Everything is about aesthetics. I personally want to adopt and am happy to adopt outside of my race, not for aesthetics but because I know those kids need a better life.
its not just eye color or skin color, its just the exotic look. I have curly hair that isn't to common with exotic face features and constantly get put on pedestals but honestly, its overrated. that stuff only gets you in the front door.
I don't have mix kids but my sisters do and I don't see nothing wrong with it. I think if anyone is in love they should have a kid from whoever they want not worrying about the persons race or color. My sisters were in love and well had kids. They are very cute kids and I think like you most kids are cute mix or not.
I agree. It's become an obsession. I'm also mixed race and lean more on the "white passing" side, even though my mom is half Asian and my dad is Mexican. So... yeah. Weird.
Because they are so damned beautiful. Even the ugliest black and white person make beautiful babies. Mixed breed dogs are the ones with the fewest genetic anomalies. Curious if that applies to humans as well. Seems that it would.
@BlueCoyote It would make sense right? Genetically "pure" dogs are the ones with the most congenital defects. Why wouldn't the evolutionary "stronger" genes surface and defects get weeded out?
Hollywood and the media are promoting race mixing to blend the white race out of existence. People who are obsessed with having mixed race babies are easily lead astray by their desire to fit in and comply to adherent new norms.

Yes a lot of mixed race people think they're better than monoracial black people because they get told all the time how superior they are to full black people. They tend to be stuck up and look down on monoracial black people particularly black women

They're cute! I know plenty of Lebanese mixed with Caucasian babies. They have the striking features of Middle Eastern people yet the softness of Caucasian people. It's simply a very nice mix.
Softness as in balance. Middle Eastern people usually have strong, striking features. Structured noses, dark and intense eyes, strong jaws. Caucasian people usually have more subtle features. Not to say either is better. I'm white. Yet I'm of Greek and English parents. My grandmother is black, half aboriginal. My Aunty is black. My brother is olive skinned with dark hair and black eyes. I'm very fair skinned with hazel eyes and fair hair. I'm the first person to know genes can get a bit wacky. I'm generally speaking.
@imhungry2234 black as in a very dark iris haha so you can't really see the pupil. You're definitely right. I just tend to know a lot of Lebanese/Caucasian couples with beautiful children. Lebanese have strong genetics so it's usually prominent.
I don't know... it's just that I come from a racially diverse family. People that are Taiwanese and white , Mexican and white, throwing in some German blood and Japanese blood... so it's not really much of a foreign concept to... but birthdays are annoying as hell when everyone gets together. Like 6 different languages before they cut the cake
Wow! That must be good. I wish I had a family like that. It's interesting. I'm not used to see mixed race people (except my mother) and mixed race couples, so when I do, it's always a new experience for me.

I mean, you do, or you wouldn't have mentioned it at all in the first place. It's okay. White people are generally very uncomfortable talking about race. It's why it ought to be talked about more and in a less confrontational manner ("white people just want to kill anyone not white!" is not productive. Making fun of trashy white girls however, is.)

That's all I'm seeing. And people don't obsess over mixed race babies. People like black features. Black people are beautiful. I never heard of someone actively preening through potential mates to get a mixed baby. I generally thought people made babies with who they fell in love with/had sex with.
