Why are people so obsessed with mixed babies/kids?

It's like the first thing people comment on about interracial couples is how beautiful their children are gonna be. I get from people all the time when I'm with my boyfriend. I see it more in social media too now. I had came across a whole page on Instagram about swirling just to make babies. I can't find it now (I wanted to link it so bad) but it was a pretty obsessive, lowkey hateful page.

I'm mixy, and interracial couples in my family go back generations (yeah had to be kept on the down low because of bullshit laws)... people are attracted to those who are the least genetically similar - natures way of preventing incest and enhancing genetic variability... I dont think people are "obsessed", but if you follow the science of attraction, stronger genetic variability can lead to stronger genes for survival, which would be innately attractive since we are programmed to seek out the strongest genes for survival... so it's not wired that people find mixed people attractive.

I've never met anyone who's obsessed with mixed-race babies. Then again, I don't have an Instagram account or Facebook or Twitter or anything like that.
I'm also not obsessed with mixed-race babies myself.

That being said, I do find them very cute and being in an interracial marriage myself, I'm very curious and excited to see what my future children will look like.

Oh, yes they do ;-).
But I've never thought of it as "obsessive". Like, we've never been in the situation that a random stranger said this to us. In that case, I would perhaps find it a little strange.
The people who have said it are my parents and siblings and our best friends. In their case, I thought it was normal because they know us very well and - in some cases - are going to be directly "affected" by the looks of our children because they're going to be the grandparents/aunt/uncle etc.

And like I said... I have to admit there's something exciting about the prospect of having interracial kids. Especially because there are very few interracial people in my country. Obviously I didn't date and marry my wife for this reason but it's a cool "side effect" if you will.
It's fun to theorize about how they're going to look like. Are they gonna look really white like me or East Asian like my wife? Or a mix of both? And if so, which parts will be from what parent? Of course you (cont.)

can do this kind of thing within a same-race relationship too but it's not quite the same. The differences are obviously much bigger for interracial kids. For example I'm very curious if my children will have my wife's "Asian" almond-shaped, one-lid eyes. I would love that because I find those type of eyes extremely pretty.

See, strangers HAVE said this to us before. I guess it just kinda rubs me the wrong way because I sometimes think that people feel like that's the only reason why I'm with my man. The people that make a big deal out of it give everyone a bad rep. Its not like I haven't thought of our future kids. But them being mixed wasn't never a big deal. Again I guess because my kids will mixed regardless because I already am. I don't know. I get what you're saying though. And I also find those type of eyes pretty.

Okay well... if strangers have said this to you two then it is indeed kind of weird and unnecessary. I mean, I wouldn't know why any stranger would make a comment to a couple about their future children in the first place, even if that couple has the same race. It's not like that's any of the stranger's business.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that you live in the US. Many Americans like being kinda chatty and don't find it hard to start convos with random people. I've also noticed this last summer when my wife and I traveled to the US for our honeymoon. For instance one time we were waiting in a line and this guy in his 40s started asking us all kinds of questions and doing smalltalk.
I first didn't even get that he was talking to us lol. Here in Switzerland this would never happen. People here are wayyy too reserved and distanced to do this kind of thing. We already get uncomfortable if we accidentally make eye contact with a stranger on the bus, let alone ask them questions ;-).

It's for sure an American thing. We have the tendency to overstep, or have you not noticed our government haha. But yes, strangers will make comments about what beautiful children we'll make. We get it walking through the mall and in restaurants and stuff.

Just out of curiosity, do you live in an area that's very multiracial or one where mostly white people live?
I'm asking this because I'd have a bit of understanding for these comments if you came from, say, rural Montana. Not that I think it's cool to make such comments to a stranger but in that case an interracial couple would of course be a bit of a sensation. Like "oh wow, this is different". If you come from a state such as Cali or NY or Florida by contrast, I'd really be confused about such comments. It's not like you'd be the only interracial couple there.

I feel like it's a well intentioned comment, but it's one of those comments where everybody is trying to like... dance around what they actually want to say. Which is good, because what they actually want to say ranges anywhere from the mindblowingly racist "dark people look best with a little lighter genetics mixed in," to the relatively tame " I wish I had the stones to have sex with someone who is a different race," and some times even "I don't approve of what you're doing, so I'm trying to find something positive to say."
