u There is this myth that if you are alive in 2018 and your ancestors owned slaves, then you have benefited from slavery and you should give up some of your profits and return them to the rightful owners. That is a fundamental myth of the reparations theory.
I know my ancestry and I know that many of my maternal ancestors owned slaves. I also know that my mother's parents were poor people who lived in a shack of a house, no indoor plumbing until around 1970, one beat up old car, and they gardened and farmed to feed themselves. There were no slaves owners on my father's side of the family.
I spent my first 9 years living in a house that did have electricity and indoor plumbing but I could also see dirt between the floor boards and I could feel the wind inside when it was blowing outside. There was no automatic "privilege" because my ancestors owned slaves. We were poor. My parents both worked two jobs and saved their money and eventually bought a nicer house.
Would I owe less than a half-share because less than half of my ancestors owned slaves? If a black American was descended from an African who captured other Africans and sold them into slavery, would they get less than a full share? How would you calculate the amount for reparations? After they were paid, would there be an end to the rhetoric of racial divisiveness. . . or would this "noble" idea have merely have set back race relations?
Oh. . . and if your great-grandfather is the one who stole the car from my great-grandfather in 1922 . . . you owe me a bunch of money! Because. . . if we are responsible for the sins of our ancestors, why limit reparations to slavery? Because that fits the PC agenda, or is there a valid reason?
Lemme get this straight... i, as a white guy, (who's never owned slaves, by the way, nor ANYONE in my family going back to the late 1800's), should pay MONEY to some black people, who NEVER have been slaves, nor have their ANYONE in their family for the past 160+ years, (in the USA), right?
You must live in one of those states that have legalized marijuana, because you have to be higher than a kite to think slavery reparations have any validity!!!

1. You say the US Govt would pay that, but where does the govt get their $$? From taxpayers. Not paying for that shit.
2. How do you determine who gets these reparations? No way to accurately determine this. On top of that, there's a high potential for even MORE govt fraud. I want a smaller govt footprint, not a larger one!
3. You must feel some guilt for what happened well over 160 years ago. I do not, along with a great many people in the US.
4. Reparations is another way of socialism to transfer wealth from those who've earned it to those who've done nothing. That's NOT what this country is - some socialistic welfare state. If you want that, go live in another country that does stupid shit like that. There are plenty of them out there, most of them have more than adequately failed their people.

I agree you guys should. It's just difficult to figure out what would be best for everybody. Some people might want a lump sum while others might want access to investment portfolios and positions of power. It's definitely a complicated question.

No.
Nobody who was responsible for, or a victim of, the slave trade remains alive today, and no reparations are due.
Would the proponents of this feel less aggrieved if their ancestors had remained in West African paradises, such as Sierra Leone or Liberia, and that they were now residents and citizens of these failed states? I think not.
Even if reparations were paid, who would pay them, and why? The descendents of the slave ship captains or the descendents of the African slavers who sold the slaves to the ships?
Where does it all end?
From whom? The taxpayer as a whole? Sure, whites will be the majority of people footing the bill but the negroes themselves would be paying for it too.
Or do only white people need to pay the reparations in the form of an additional tax? In that case no, that would be racist against white people.
Systematically it would be a very complicated process, to give reparations to African slaves descendants.
What is concerning to me however, is the amount of disgust & anger that comes up,
when talking about THE most brutal, dehumanizing, cultural destructive, & systematic slavery eras of all time on this planet (in which reparations where never given once it was ended),
when my ancestors were not even recognized as people & were socially & governmentally considered subhuman,
and the idea of "right the wrong" by doing reparations now is met with such dismissive attitudes.
This type of heartless attitude towards black people as a whole, is THE source of racism in the modern era. Black people are defending themselves from the lack of humanity nonblacks have for them.
Any black person who comes off as racist,
is simply reacting defensively,
to the above attitude about many nonwhites and their thoughts about reparations. The lack of humanity for black Americans is inherently missing for many nonblacks. THAT is the problem.
I'm not saying that giving African slave ancestors reparations is a fiscally feasible... but the idea of "better late than never" for acknowledging THE most dehumanizing and brutal slavery era of our planet... shouldn't have such hate attached to it.

Any black who comes off as racist is reacting defensively? How bout when I've been called a white tonky or told that my stuff should be stolen because I'm white and they want what I earned? How bout then? I've known plenty of racist black people and saying that they can't be racist is racism in and of itself. What makes you unable to be held accountable for your actions and statements? My family never owned slaves, was here before the Germans started world war 1 or 2 and from them I learned maintained an open love and respect policy with anyone, not just white people, that everyone is equal.
I had to deal with a woman who thought this same thing. She was fired because she stole a woman's wedding ring from white woman that she pawned at a shop for less than 1/10th it's worth. Why? Because the other girl was white and she didn't feel that white people deserved anything. she wanted it, so she took it. That's not being fair, that's being a racist.
A number of people were put on probationary status, one got demoted and another was fired because she would spread rumors and get the first shift manager on her side (she was a black woman so it was natural at first). Until later, even the manager wouldn't back her because of the racist, biggotted stuff she would say. Racism has never been exclusively white, and it's wrong to think so, racist in it's own way.
Here's what I think. African Americans already have black only universities, special scholarships, chances to move up the ladder at most jobs and be less qualified (affirmative action). Now why on earth would we give them reparations? There are some African Americans out there who stay in the same neighborhoods they grew up in complaining of no way out. Hogwash there's always a way out. Besides my ancestors came over well after slavery ended. If were to give them reparations how about the Japanese Americans ancestors that were forced into camps until the end of WW2. Or how about, more currently, the millions of Military Veterans who are having a hard time readjusting to civilian life? Reparations absolutely not.

There is a famous classic philosopher named “Immanuel Kant” and everything he wrote isn’t easy-reading but he has this test, for the lack of better words, on ethics, and if you are ever confronted with an ethical question of right or wrong... what you should do, you can use this test.
All you have to do, let’s say you are thinking of cheating on an exam, and apply the test, you then imagine if everyone, faced with the same decision, made the same decision... what would be the outcome collectively? If you cheat, and everyone cheated, then it means there would be no way of determining who does well, or fails, so there is your answer.
You can apply the same test to your question. If blacks are given money for what many generations before them suffered, then what would happen? Where would it stop? What would it accomplish? Etc

I see point in providing everyone an equal (as possible) opportunity to make it in life meaning universal healthcare, mostly free education all the way to university level and overall a good social safety net (money better spent). We do have more records now than ever before but even one of my grandmothers using stuff like ancestry. com can't find everything. So if there's very few records on me what do you do? Give me a million dollars? You're going to do that with everyone without records and destroy our economy in the process? Are you going to send me a life time supply of potatoes? Are you going to kick out some whiter people on ancestral Blackfoot Indian land and give me 40 acres of the land my ancestors had? What if my ancestors weren't slaves and you did that? What if they were and you didn't give me anything? What if a black person were in the same situation but their black ancestors actually owned other black slaves (because it did happen) and then you rewarded this person even though their ancestors committed the same...
