Nowadays when a woman looks feminine or just looks attractive it'll more than likely get hate for the developers. Ex. Tracer from Overwatch,
, Nova StarCraft 2
Maybe looking feminine is out of style now a days lol
For the record, to those people who honestly think women are oversexualised in video games, let me introduce you to a few people in popular video games.
This is Krieg from Borderlands 2:
He has the shiniest meat bycicles, and that's a pretty big asset.
This is Monkey from Enslaved: Odyssey to the West:
Oh, and he's voiced by Andy Serkis, so it's a constant ASMR when he talks.
This is Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher series:
He's an expert fighter and a playboy. Oh, and he's like 120 years old, AND is completely infertile. An experienced man AND a living vibrator?
This is Kratos from the God of War series:
He has literally killed Ares, became the Greek god of war, and then killed Zeus too.
Oh, and in the latest installment he's voiced by Christopher Judge, AKA "Teal'c" from Stargate.
This is Garrus Vakarian from the Mass Effect series:
He's in the middle of some calibrations.
Now, you might first ask - how did a weird, reptile-looking alien thing make it onto the list.
I'd like to point out that Garrus was chosen the 8th sexist male character in video games. Yup.
Why? This is why:
Apart from the clunky game design, anyone who has played Mass Effect knows Garrus is one of the best characters in the series, and certainly one of the smoothest.
Anyway, my point is - male videogame characters create the most unrealistic expectations for men out there. But nobody cares. Why? Because we understand that this is fantasy, so we don't develop complexes over it. That's probably the same for women, except for the Anita Sarkeesian types
Now let's talk about characters in YA novels for a bit!
Twilight: female lead is bland and forgettable; male leads are hunky, sexy, strong, ideal female wetdreams.
Divergent: Ditto.
Hunger Games: Ditto. Katniss is emotionally infantile, and expects the world to work things out for her, while Peeta and Gale bend over backwards to accomodate her.
Mortal Instruments: Ditto
MHO bait
There is a difference between having female characters with sex appeal and having female characters with sex appeal to cover up the fact that your game is not very good.
That isn't what my question is about, but ok.
It is kind of exactly what it is though. If you dont have a sexually appealing female character for a good reason then why exactly DO you have it in there for? Hence, controversy. If you can simply justify it with a rational explanation then we are left with some very sleazy practices.
Aside for the fact the customers don't like ugly characters for the sake of being ugly (Mass effect: Andromeda). Though I do agree with ur overall sentiment.
In the case for dungeon hunters, the gods the characters are sometimes based on are supposed to be pretty too. So why not make them all look good yeah? No one wants an old man that's on his deathbed as a warrior. I plan on asking a question related to this too.
Maybe it's because 90% of the time a woman is in a video game she's scantily clad and conventionally attractive, whereas the male counterpart is more likely to be neither. It's a bit weird for not actually reflecting reality. Nudity and sex appeal can make sense in some situations eg. bayonetta, but for situations in which the attire is not appropriate, it's a bit weird. I think Rainbow Six Siege is the perfect example of putting women in combat video games and doing it right, female operators are dressed how people in that situation would be dressed.
I personally am a female "gamer". I can only rarely agree that the sex appeal is too much- I mean, let's take a look at all these other industries. Now, is it more likely for a woman to be sexualized than a man in a game? Yes, but now with women in the community, it might become more of both.
Take Bayonetta for example. She is extremely revealing and generally seen as sex appeal, but she is a complete BAD A$$! She is honestly great and to me at least, can even be seen as a role model at some points.
Cool, usually nowadays when its brought up it's to antagonize men and the people that like attractive female characters in games. It's like people just can't enjoy the games for what they are now.
Yeah, it is actually kinda sad to see the reactions of a female not being attractive in a game at times. Some people went crazy when Moira in Overwatch was released because she wasn't attractive. But she's an intelligent scientist, and that is p great.
Woah, really? People would find anything to get mad about. The Moira skin looked great, my only gripe tho? Is that it looks like it should be called Lich rather than a Banshee. It even fits her theme.
I meant in general, when she was revealed lol
Oh, accidentally went on a tirade. xD
by the way, do you still play Overwatch?
lol yeah I do :P
I don't have anyone to group up with so if you'd like to play it some time let me know! đź‘Ť
alrighty man!
Apparently, you need to follow me so I can DM you the Battlenet#

I play video games and never had an issue with attractive female characters.
In fact, I have an issue with how all the men are overtly sexualized yet no one says anything about that.
Take Tekken for example: people get mad about the women being pretty and busty, but the whole cast of male characters (save for Ganryu) are fucking skinny and/or jacked dudes, often shirtless.
Most male leads are like that in some way.
And don't even get me started on Square Enix hair...
You nailed it there. It's like they can't enjoy gaming so they have to ruin it for others while being a hypocrite.
Yup both men and women are sexualized and it’s ok because we are sexual beings it’s in our nature to sexualize each other
I don't think they're bothered by the fact that the character has some sex appeal. The problem is when you look at a character and the sexual attributes are emphasized to the point where they're the most noticeable thing about her. In the video you posted, I think it was too much..
It's a fighting game, and she is a woman, her tits are going to exist. If it was a story game then I'd understand your point.
Females in video games are unrealistic but guys into that junk aren’t on my radar anyway.
Then it must be really hard for you on the field. It's just a video game character. xD
I’m with a man who doesn’t participate in that garbage.
Define "participate"? Cause if playing video games takes people off your radar something is wrong, and it isn't when men.
Playing mostly every day
Very few people do that, and this comment has veered way off my original question.
Ovetsexualized video game characters cater to the fantasy of what gamer guys will likely never get.
Yeah, that's the point, its called "Fantasy" for a reason. Doesn't mean that you should hate it or the people that like it.
I don’t lol
Well, your comments suggested you did. However, I'm not saying you do I'm speaking in general.
It really feels like people are trying to find stuff to be angry about.
A fanservice for game who played mostly by guys? but putting a ugly woman into a game is more progressive, and who care if the fans would not like it? :)
It's pretty stupid. I'm not sure why, but seems like feminists do target gaming for some reason. I blame that Anita Sarkeshian lady.
I wrote a blog post a while ago about why I f***ing hate video games. They appeal to this male fantasy!
I guess, because the make them have an almost unhuman body.
Most video games are stylized, and no one but feminist takes it seriously.
Wholesomely agree.
I don't know. The last video game I played was Pac Man with my daughter when she was about 6.
LOL! I know--it's hilarious! The number of people who go absolutely nuts just because Lara Croft or any other character has ginormous tits is insane.
It bothers women who have none in real life.
I honestly don't care, as a video gamer myself.
Lack of self awareness
Doesn't bother me.
