I mean... I was a little confused when they announced a black actress as Ariel, but then I decided that it doesn't matter. I grew up with the animated version so seeing Ariel as something other than a white girl (fish?) with red hair was off-putting initially.
But it doesn't matter because mermaids don't actually exist and yeah, technically it takes place off the cost of Denmark, a traditionally white ethnic country, but people don't go about mating with mermaids so who says that the fish people are confined in any way to the ethic makeup of the land people? What are the rules of the sea?
And Mulan isn't black because she's Chinese and Chinese people look Chinese. I'm sure there are black people in China, but Mulan is a true story, or based on a real legend or somehow rooted in history so being ethnically correct is important.

I personally appreciate Disney staying true to the stories to some extent.
The reason Mulan isn’t transgender is because there was not such a thing as transgender in her time or culture. It would be inaccurate.
Disney could make a movie about a modern trans princess. That would be historically accurate.
And the little mermaid “can be black” because mermaids don’t exist so it wouldn’t be inaccurate.
Now you could argue that there weren’t African Americans in the country in which her kind lived in the ocean under but again, she’s another species so it’s hard to have a valid argument there.
Also, I don’t know what country little mermaid takes place or what all races of people lived there. I made that comment above to stop an unreasonable argument before it starts.
Ignorant Soul
Mulan is a Human with a traditional backstory coming from. the reigon on China with a Chinese family that is very cultural and is all about honor, so how is this fictional tale could she be black with a back story like that?
Ariel the Mermaid, a FICTIONAL imaginary fish that isn't real what so ever has no backstory or regional traditional culture because Why? It's a FAKE FISH CARTOON, so guess what that leaves the page open for the color to change on this cartoon character because it's simply not real.
Now go cry in your pillow at night about how your childhood cartoon changed colors over night since you have nothing else better to worry about loser
Because although Mulan isn't black, she is at least already another minority--so Disney was able to exploit diversity marketing while still remaining faithful to the original movie in Mulan's case.
It's not exactly logical to consider Asians disenfranchised though, because they have higher IQs and (arguably, as a result of such) are on average more successful than white people--so you'd think they'd be more demonized by the left than they are (though admittedly, we are starting to see a shift on this).

You are right, neo-liberal directors are always falsifying history with so called "political correctness".
For example, in some new movies about Robin Hood, King Arthur etc, we can see "black knights", or even "black noblemen" (in medieval Britain), which is just ridiculous.Mulan is specifically Asian, I think Chinese maybe? Never seen it, but from what I know, it’d look pretty foolish to have a black woman play an Asian character.
The Little Mermaid... mermaids aren’t real, they aren’t a specific race, the only requirement is that they have a human upper body, so there’s plenty of license to cast anyone to play her.Mulan is based on a historical legend that takes place in China.
Little Mermaid is based on fictional creatures that don't exist which was taken from a fairytale that isn't actually historically accurate to Disney's rendition of it.You know... "Diversity" only applies to White people, according to Liberal cultists (🐁)
#BanLiberalsBecause Mulan being Asian, has to do with her up bringing and the culture presented within the film. The little mermaid, is literally a mermaid. Dassit.
Well, I believe it’s unknown whether or not Mulan was a real person. But the movie is based off of a Chinese legend. Watching the movie there’s a lot of cultural significance to it and it would make no sense to make Mulan anything other than Chinese.
Ariel is from the ocean, and she’s a fake mythological creature. There’s no reason why she can’t be black. How do you not see the difference?Oh shut up. The people whining about this are the main ones shouting how sensitive everyone else is when it comes to actual issues in society. U are a 28 year old man worrying about a princess movie. Get a life
The little mermaid should have been a black panromantic asexual single father of 4 that's also disabled so needs one of these
Oh also he's uncircumcised and now has a disfunctional open relationship with Larry the crabMulan is Asian because Disney wants to appeal to an Asian audience, and also get approval from the Chinese government, which is why they removed the sexually ambiguous themes present in the original movie to push forward a more nationalistic, traditional version of Mulan that the Communist Party would approve of.
Ariel is black because that sells in America. Literally everything a company does is for profit and everyone assuming otherwise is either a useful idiot or a conservative rube.Mulan is a movie based around a specific ethnicity and culture. Changing the race would ruin the story. Culture and ethncitity do not play any role in the little mermaid. Changing it does not change the story
Cause Mulan and her story is specifically Chinese.. Back in a real period.. Whereas The Little Mermaid was a loose adaptation, and they made the story to where Ariel could be any shade..
Mulan is an Asian woman
Ariel is a fantasy supernatural creature.
Ariel could be purple skinned if they wanted her to be and it would be as realistic as any other color. Why are people such sensitive snowflakes about this?
Because Disney wouldn’t want to offend Asians... but they get off making a black girl play a white girl from Scandinavia.
Because you idiot. Mulan is based on an REAL PERSON.
I don't care. You must have a really boring life to obsess over such meaningless things.
Wait, Why the fuck is the little mermaid black?
This movie just made itself garbage by checking off social justice boxes instead of just making the movie as it was... a fairy tale written by DANISH author Hans Christian Andersen.
It isn't being "sensitive" to be against bullshit political agendas ruining movies.I just love how this only pisses off republicans. Because it also exposes their cruel irony. In that they have also turned into complaining snowflakes just like the democrats.
Why not make them all transsexuals
Because she is Asian and Ariel is White
