Thanks to all that voted and posted opinions. There seems to be agreement from almost everyone that this should not be a crime (which I certainly agree with and is what I expected). Only 7% said it should be a crime. It's split almost exactly evenly between "she shouldn't do it, but it's not a crime" and "there's nothing wrong with it" which also isn't too surprising. There's very little difference in the percentages of pink and blue votes also which is a little surprising to me.

Yikes!! Never saw anything like the Utah case before. If it were a crime, my girlfriend and I would have been in jail ages ago. So put me down for an emphatic "No, there is nothing wrong with it."

For my part, I grew up in a home where dad was a doctor and tended to treat nudity as just another day at the office. So we tended to be somewhat more casual about nudity in our family then did my friend's families. A fact that only gradually dawned on me as I got older and started doing "sleepovers" at friend's homes and such.

To be sure, I tended to see dad naked only if were at the gym locker room or maybe if I went into the bathroom while he was showering. Never saw my mother naked. That said, seeing my older brother and sister and younger brother naked - and them seeing me - was not uncommon.

It was not a lifestyle or anything. Just a sort of casual attitude.

My girlfriend and I have lived together for over 12 years and have three children - boys 9 and 8, girl age 6 - together. (We don't want to be married.) I sleep in the nude, but my girlfriend sleeps in pajamas normally but for us to be around the house partially or completely naked - particularly when getting ready for the day or to call it a night, walking to or from the bathroom and such or sometimes, in the summer, sunbathing nude in our secluded backyard - is not unusual.

The kids have seen us naked and in fact my oldest - a little firecracker in any case - wants to be like dad and will go around nude himself. (Which can be a problem when we have guests. We're working on that.) No one gives it a thought.

Every family will be different and even I will allow that we are not quite average - a bit of a statistical blip in the curve by American norms. Still, it is not a matter of great moment - not at all sexual.

(Although a couple of times one of the kids caught mommy and daddy... well... you know. That we treated differently. We don't mind the kids seeing something natural and beautiful, but at the right age and with due respect for circumstances. Quite one thing to see mommy and daddy laying naked next to each other, quite another to see daddy mounting mommy and...)

So put me down for a huge no. Else my girlfriend and I will be doing 30 to life on Riker's Island.

I think in part it’s also likely a generational thing. My old man grew up in a family with 6 kids and they all were quite the nudists. They’d skinny dip in their pool and run around the house naked frequently. It seems to me that in this day and age that’s more abnormal than it is normal in the home with family. That said growing up my friends and I frequently streaked and went skinny dipping, and around the house I refuse to wear a shirt (although always wear pants/ shorts/ at least underwear). So the idea that it’s a generational issue may just be a false perception that I have.

@ladsin Well, as I believe I mentioned, I gradually realized as I got older that my family was a bit more easy going about nudity than that of my friends and their families. So I tend to think it had more to do with my dad being a doctor and he just kind of shrugged at it.

My mom somewhat less so. My younger brother and I were famous for coming downstairs to eat breakfast either in our underwear - mainly tighty-whities - or even naked. It was just easier than getting dressed, eating, then going back upstairs to shower and get ready for school.

My mother would just sigh and mumble about the price of raising boys. So I don't think it was generational. Could be, but I don't think so. Besides, it was not really a lifestyle thing with us, it was more just a casual attitude - as it is now with my girlfriend and I and our children.

@ladsin LOL - as the kids say. Honestly, I am sure my parents have a few of me sans the standard amount of clothes but I don't really recall. Certainly, if they had been taking pictures as we were all getting ready for school or if we came home from a summer job or sports practice and just opted to jump in our backyard pool, the photos would have been - ahem - revealing.

Still, as I think back - and I have not looked at family photos with my parents in a while as I live in the DC area and they live in Michigan - I don't really recall. Plenty of my brothers and I shirtless, but that is the most I remember.

Strange, children in european countries like germany and sweden, where nudity is common, this doesn't seem to be an issue. Tbh, I saw my parents naked until I was at least 10, they never did anything sexual, but they're my parents, sometimes they showered with me or I would walk in on them changing because I was a kid. Well I'm glad I don't live in European countries because to me at a certain age it can become uncomfortable for the child. I have to admit it was different with a same sex parent. My mom and I got dressed in the same room. It seem to be ok cuz we were both girls. And maybe for boys it's the same with their dads. But I've never seen my father naked and I'm thankful to him for his discretion. My step dad I did accidentally see naked when he walked by my opened room naked thinking I was asleep. Different cultures will have different rules around nakedness. The existence of the www allows us to see more in detail in the kitchen and habits of other people.

From what I read, she could be required to register as a sex offender for 10 years if she's convicted, but as far as I know she has only been charged and hasn't been convicted yet. Hopefully there will be a reasonable judge that will dismiss the case, but it is Utah which is an extremely conservative state so who knows.

I think a lot of states have ancient laws about morality that are still on the books (like prohibitions on a man and a woman living together if they're not married), but are never enforced. I suspect that's because most people think those laws are crazy, but the lawmakers can't repeal them because the religious conservatives would throw a fit and vote against them in the next election.

I agree that relationships with stepchildren could be different than with biological children depending on how old the children were at the time the new stepparent became part of their life and how long it's been.

I'm in that situation myself and while I feel that I have pretty good relationships with both I do certainly feel that I have more of a parent/child relationship with the one that was a pre-teen when I came along than the one that was in high school. I think that over time a parent/child relationship can develop between stepparents and stepchildren and in that case I don't see a lot of difference in how one would act toward them.
