God accused of rape on controversial tv sketch. Thoughts?

Around the New Year’s countdown, an Irish channel showed a comedy sketch of God being apprehended on rape charges. Inevitably, it wasn’t well-received by the religious. However, over the last few decades, we Irish have worked hard to remove religion from having any influence over our society and media, even if it may still be there in the background.

Were RTE (the channel in question) right to apologise to the 600 snowflakes (out of a population of 5 million) who complained about mere acting, or should freedom of art continue to be practiced unapologetically in a country where blasphemy laws were abolished a few years ago anyway? Why should we appease the religious all over again? Nothing wrong with having religious communities and diversity, I’m just sick of them acting like their feelings are more important than our humourous culture!

Just like how the greek gods did rape and many others gods have been depicted doing rape. Nevermind according to the bible if your married, the guy can have sex with you whenever even if you say no aka rape. And it's always be okay to marry 13 years old too. But hey different time, and they slowly changed details of the story and telling of it all and made things unacceptable and different to get with PC times.

So to me this is an accurate depiction as well as funny. That should never be need to apologized for. What's next? getting mad at christ been born in a cave not a stable when he was born in a cave... or the whole false picture of Christmas.

You can't say the N word, C word, F word, other F word because it's offensive, not that I would but if I DID dare to say any of these silly words I'd offend do many people that I'd lose my job and maybe worse.

And you think that ridiculing God and offending any believers is us being too sensitive?

Got to tread carefully, we don't want an irish jihad on our hands. There's probably still caches of bombs lying around from the troubles and as we all know when it comes to religion the irish are as easily angered as muslims. Add the Irish love of alcohol to the mix and things could turn bad.

Comedians poke fun at everything from rape to racism, child molestation to incest, obesity to religion, literally nothing is sacred. The more taboo something is, the funnier it can be to make a joke out of it.

of course they doesn’t prevent people from being offended. Not everyone has a sense of humor, especially when it’s about something near and dear to them. But I don’t think that’s a valid reason for censorship. The comedic intent is clear, it’s obviously not a serious accusation against an imaginary being.

Your options here sucked. I'm pro art and entertainment, but the premise of that skit is idiotic. I wouldn't have cared enough to get upset, I'd just have turned it off. Religious groups got all upset about Monty Python's "Life of Brian" because they thought it mocked Christ. It didn't - it mocked them !!

Whether the premise was idiotic or not is irrelevant. It’s about the right to broadcast something without apologizing to crybabies afterwards. If I was the head of RTE channel, I’d encourage creating another sketch mocking these complainants instead

You have the "right" to broadcast anything you want -- at least once. If you don't break any broadcasting regulations, you can continue to broadcast to do so. The "right to broadcast" and the "decision to apologize" are also not relevant to each other... whatsoever. I think they missed a real opportunity by not saying at the start of the sketch " This may offend some viewers. We apologize in advance, but actually, we don't really care that much so don't whine to us about it" !! Now THAT would have been funny !! LOL

Well technically God did rape Mary, it says so in the Bible. Personally I think it was Joseph's kid and Mary lied about the rape thing because they weren't married.

There's always a need to apologize to the people, and ask forgiveness from God, when you make the horrible mistake of creating a sketch which mocks God, when we know that The One True God is incapable of sinning.

@Archerer The existence of the supernatural and the traditional view of a personal god presents many contradictions. Therefore I find the assistance of gods to be highly unlikely. However, since it is impossible to prove his non-existence, I won't commit the same logical sin as he did by making an absolute claim that no gods exist.

@Archerer Mankind committed sin, thereby starting off the whole thing. Sin is something that God has warned mankind against taking part in. I don't believe that sin is something tangible that can be "created". It's a wrongful behavior that helps to separate us from God
