Around the New Year’s countdown, an Irish channel showed a comedy sketch of God being apprehended on rape charges. Inevitably, it wasn’t well-received by the religious. However, over the last few decades, we Irish have worked hard to remove religion from having any influence over our society and media, even if it may still be there in the background.
Were RTE (the channel in question) right to apologise to the 600 snowflakes (out of a population of 5 million) who complained about mere acting, or should freedom of art continue to be practiced unapologetically in a country where blasphemy laws were abolished a few years ago anyway? Why should we appease the religious all over again? Nothing wrong with having religious communities and diversity, I’m just sick of them acting like their feelings are more important than our humourous culture!

God accused of rape on controversial tv sketch. Thoughts?
Pretty sure god already did rape mary... Just like how the greek gods did rape and many others gods have been depicted doing rape. Nevermind according to the bible if your married, the guy can have sex with you whenever even if you say no aka rape. And it's always be okay to marry 13 years old too. But hey different time, and they slowly changed details of the story and telling of it all and made things unacceptable and different to get with PC times.
So to me this is an accurate depiction as well as funny. That should never be need to apologized for. What's next? getting mad at christ been born in a cave not a stable when he was born in a cave... or the whole false picture of Christmas.
You can't say the N word, C word, F word, other F word because it's offensive, not that I would but if I DID dare to say any of these silly words I'd offend do many people that I'd lose my job and maybe worse.
And you think that ridiculing God and offending any believers is us being too sensitive?
There's one way to find out if your attitude is a good idea but it will be too late for apologies. Your time frame for mercy is now. You don't have to apologise. Just keep having fun. You're gonna die one day. I hope you make better choices before then.
Got to tread carefully, we don't want an irish jihad on our hands. There's probably still caches of bombs lying around from the troubles and as we all know when it comes to religion the irish are as easily angered as muslims. Add the Irish love of alcohol to the mix and things could turn bad.
No room for blasphemy. Why can't people respect others beliefs? You may not believe in god but is it a reasons to blasphem it and insult their faith? I do not understand why people feel entitlement to being rude and then cry after when people told them they were being rude...
Comedians poke fun at everything from rape to racism, child molestation to incest, obesity to religion, literally nothing is sacred. The more taboo something is, the funnier it can be to make a joke out of it.
of course they doesn’t prevent people from being offended. Not everyone has a sense of humor, especially when it’s about something near and dear to them. But I don’t think that’s a valid reason for censorship. The comedic intent is clear, it’s obviously not a serious accusation against an imaginary being.
Your options here sucked. I'm pro art and entertainment, but the premise of that skit is idiotic. I wouldn't have cared enough to get upset, I'd just have turned it off. Religious groups got all upset about Monty Python's "Life of Brian" because they thought it mocked Christ. It didn't - it mocked them !!

Whether the premise was idiotic or not is irrelevant. It’s about the right to broadcast something without apologizing to crybabies afterwards. If I was the head of RTE channel, I’d encourage creating another sketch mocking these complainants instead
You have the "right" to broadcast anything you want -- at least once. If you don't break any broadcasting regulations, you can continue to broadcast to do so. The "right to broadcast" and the "decision to apologize" are also not relevant to each other... whatsoever. I think they missed a real opportunity by not saying at the start of the sketch " This may offend some viewers. We apologize in advance, but actually, we don't really care that much so don't whine to us about it" !! Now THAT would have been funny !! LOL
Well the same people applauding this christianphobia are the very same who shout Islamaphobia when the gang rape of young Christian girls in Europe by Muslims is brought up.

Don't know why Christians would get mad. I mean, haven't they read the book? That's literally in there. God raped a man's wife and that's how they got Jesus.
Blasphemy should only be punishable within religious communities and the worst any religion should be allowed to do is remove you from their community.
Well technically God did rape Mary, it says so in the Bible. Personally I think it was Joseph's kid and Mary lied about the rape thing because they weren't married.
When you think about it like that it all becomes rather sordid.
That sounds hilarious! I've always enjoyed pissing off the Christian community. As an American with scandinavian blood I worship the old gods. And despise all abrohamic and non jewdaic religions!

There's always a need to apologize to the people, and ask forgiveness from God, when you make the horrible mistake of creating a sketch which mocks God, when we know that The One True God is incapable of sinning.
@wagsingle The Christion God (the trinity of Father, Son, Holy Spirit) is incapable of being where there is sin. The HOLINESS of God is immeasurable. His Word talks about this.
God created sin... And killed many people. Isn’t that a sin? Also lied to Adam and Eve, also a sin... so... like how does your mind live in denial of such obvious blantant hypocrisy? Is it easy to just blindly accept complete bullshit? how do you square your beliefs with it?
@Archerer The existence of the supernatural and the traditional view of a personal god presents many contradictions. Therefore I find the assistance of gods to be highly unlikely. However, since it is impossible to prove his non-existence, I won't commit the same logical sin as he did by making an absolute claim that no gods exist.
@Archerer Mankind committed sin, thereby starting off the whole thing. Sin is something that God has warned mankind against taking part in. I don't believe that sin is something tangible that can be "created". It's a wrongful behavior that helps to separate us from God
