Short answer to an easy question: You didn't choose your parents and family either, yet they fed you, clothed you, etc. Should you be loyal to them?

To be sure, as Burke said, "For a country to be loved it must be lovely." However, as a default position, the starting point ought be loyalty and pride. This then reflecting on both the character of the individual and providing that individual the incentive to work to make his country better.

Absent pride in one's country, one is apt to neglect its virtues and to leave its defects to fester. This then being the worst of all possible worlds. The virtues will fade, the follies will persist.

Pride, properly understood, is a motive force to cherish what we have been given and to work to care for and improve it. Add in that one's country is one's community and one's fellow man, it then should cause astonishment that beings so complex and in so many ways imperfect, have nevertheless been able to build so grand a thing as the nation that, by accident of birth, one lives in.

There are many things I dis agree with the way my country does things my government does things , but like you said we don't pick where we are born , but being born in the United States or any place else keeps me loyal and just because I don't like something doesn't mean that I'm right about it it just means that I don't like it. I strongly agree. I like my country (not the politics though), but I have more of a cosmopolitan mindset. I don't understand why some people are proud of being born somewhere, it's not an achievement but rather an accident. Every country has its beauty and history and I don't see why mine would be better than others. I see people as individuals more than members of nationalities.

Anyway, those states are full of Mexican Americans now. The Mexican govt let's the cartels control everything. Mexico has the potential to be such a great and rich country.

@Jesus_is_the_guey I'm from sonora and I don't come from aztecs but they're a part of the country's history as a whole. Just like the natives from my state. Most Mexicans don't come from aztecs, you're right, even around central Mexico they had other mesoamerican tribes but the aztec (and other advanced societies) culture is a source of pride for the whole country.

I can’t argue with that it’s just a very sad history once the Spanish came the more I learn the more I grow increasingly hateful of the Europeans which also gets confusing since I’m from the north too and I. The north we generally have more European ancestry like I have blond haired blue eyed cousins and my grandpa had blue eyes too so it’s hard to hate the Europeans when we have mixed ancestry with them and it’s hard to be proud of your culture when the pos Spanish destroyed most of it the Aztecs do have a small amount of history that survived the Spanish though and I did learn a lot about them while in college and some on YouTube and google honestly they’re one of the most intriguing cultures that had ever existed

The assumption that patriotism is foolish leads to a simple question, why have a country in the first place? Possibly because you have a culture and identity that the people living there are proud of, and want to keep. Their neighbors have a different one, so they fight some, draw a line on a natural feature like a mountain or river, lacking that an arbitrary line. Kind of like the US borders with Mexico and Canada rather than our East and West coast where there is simply sea.

People can dislike the country they live in, and try to change it, or immigrate to countries that are more to their liking.

It’s foolish to be proud of it automatically and blindly, for sure. If you think it warrants your patriotism, that’s fine. I just take issue with most countries in the sense that they’d ask you to possibly cease to exist going to war the country’s survival, but no country would risk its own existence for you to continue to live on. In other words, think long and hard about the prospect of dying for your country, because your country wouldn’t die for you. Just something to think about. Just because you are born somewhere does not mean you will have good experiences growing up in that area. The experiences you have will ultimately dictate whether or not you love and are proud of your country or not.

But you gotta keep in mind everyone should take pride in what they have and should try to fix what's broke about it and promote what's good. Pride should drive toward betterment of yourself, not pushing down of others. And the better your camp is the more you can help others up as well (if/as they want your help). I don't think there's any country that has absolutely zero good qualities or things about it.

Of course there's no shame in adoption/divorce of a country either. That happens in families although it also doesn't mean you shouldn't recognize the good aspects of the family members/relationships you have left behind, even if there weren't many. So with countries.

No I don't think so. You are born in to your country and the culture and values of the nation are a big part of how you learn about the world. Its natural to grow up respecting those values and in a closed loop you love your nation and those with similar values.

Changing your nation is going to mean a big shift of what is culturally acceptable to you. A rather sad example is Somalia. The country has been at war for over a decade and as a result violence is common and a norm. A disproportionately larger number of Somali migrants struggle with not being able to use violence as compared to other migrants.

It's one thing to be proud of those within your community or certain aspects of your country's culture that you enjoy. It's even alright to dislike the government but strive to want to improve it from the inside and be proud of that effort. But telling people to leave a country they don't like living in is incredibly ignorant of all the obstacles and resources a person would require to do so legally, and is indicative of that person's inability to have compassion.

For me, you can only be proud of something you achieved and being born in a certain place, isn't really something you achieve.

I think it's okay to be proud of the things we're born with. Some people are born with musical talent. I think it's okay to be proud of that. And with country, how are we supposed to relate to so many people around us if we aren't proud of our country? Well, there are practical things to consider. Even if we hate our country, most people will have a hard time finding citizenship elsewhere. It's like a marriage you're born into. So I think it's wise to find a way to love your wife and be proud of her, even if she's making that very difficult. And maybe we can find ways to improve that. I don't think criticism has to come from a place of hate. I think the best kind of criticism comes from a place of love.

But I do not find it in good taste ever at least on the opposing side when people burn their own flags -- not in a developed nation. Maybe North Korea is a genuine place to revolt but I think many people overexaggerate their country's problems and conflate them with their personal ones. I do not like hatred at least -- if there is an absence of pride -- unless the hatred seems genuinely warranted by the harshest conditions. I think working towards pride in "recoverable" cases helps us to better work towards something genuinely worth being proud of, even if it fell a tad short before.
