Now I’m sure prior to this incident, he actually must’ve been everything he appeared to be. He had no prior criminal record. He must’ve actually been an ordinary decent guy throughout most of his adult life.
Now I was discussing this matter with my Dad today. Since his arrest, he has been serving a life sentence in prison and while in jail he has been writing all sorts of people.
Some of his letters have been released publicly and the man claims to have repented for his crimes and found God.
While I was telling my Dad about this he claimed that many prisoners in the past have claimed similar reasons of “finding God” out of desperate attempts to earn the public’s sympathy.
But what if the man really does feel sorry for his crimes as he claims to? Would he then deserve a lighter sentence?
From the best of my knowledge this man only killed his family out of desperation. Apparently he was having financial troubles and didn’t want to pay child support pending his plans for divorce.
And while I am not trying to justify his actions because they are morally despicable, I do not see him as a threat to the general public.
I believe that once he has served a fair amount of time (in my view at least 30 years) he should be able to live his final days in freedom as an old man.
If everything he is saying is true about his repetance and newfound faith in God then there is a degree of sympathy that I feel for him.
