+1 yI got thrown out of my history class in 10th grade, but the history chair actually liked me and knew I had potential. It happened to be during her work period so, I got a personal tutor... 😅
She said I could pick any topic I wanted, spend the time researching it, and she wanted a college level report on it for a final grade.
I wish I still had the paper, I'd send it to you. But the short answer is it's extremely complicated. I deeply regreted choosing us and Iranian relations.
It all started back in the 70's and 80's, but most people would say the hostage crisis was what really staked us firmly against each other. Google "Iranian hostage crisis" if you want to start down the wormhole, but basically the Iranians trapped a bunch of US journalists in Iran and held them hostage for over a year, which was a huge embarrassment to the US and quite possibly lost Jimmy Carter the White House.
Since then, it's been like mean girls between our two governments. They do anything they can to hurt the other and it just escalates over time. Luckily, (or unluckily) both countries are facing so many other problems right now that it hasn't been a frontburner issue for a long time.
I've always had a certain understanding for the Iranians point of view. Our government likes to complain about their ties to Russia and China and their support for our other enemies in the middle east, but we don't give them a lot of other options. Iran is a much smaller country than the USA, but they don't like to be bullied anymore than anyone else. How could they not side with our enemies? That said, they don't really try to get along with us or de-escalate the tensions any more than we do.
Basically, it's like mean girls. It started with just having some differences, then there were some small disagreements, then it just kept going back and forth with both sides doing anything they could to hurt or embarrass the other.
So now, there is almost no chance of being Allies, and there is a lot of anger and resentment on both sides.41 Reply- +1 y

+1 yI don't hate most of the people.
I don't care for the country though.
Why? I'm from the USA. They stormed our American embassy in 1979 or 80 and took roughly 60 U. S. hostages and held them for 444 days. That's an act of war to me.
They are considered the biggest state sponsor of terrorism and funds Hamas and it is behind the killing of Americans in Iraq.
Their leasers have said they want Israel wiped off the map.
I consider Iran a hostile nation. I'm sure they think the same of the USA. I don't disliked the people. I know they are oppressed and the government often rounds up and executes those it deems to be a threat. I know many in Iran want change there.21 Reply- +1 y
Majority of Iranians actually like/are neutral about America. Pre-COVID days when we actually used to go to classes, our huge university of 8000 students had done the stupid move of drawing an American flag in front of the gate so we would step on it as we enter, and I did notice that most students would just choose to enter from the very side so they wouldn't step on it.
+1 yI’m not exactly knowledgeable about the political situation in Iran, but politics will be a huge part of it, not to mention the government itself has done bad things so that also plays a role in it I guess.
But one thing I will tell you, is do not be ashamed of who you are. Persian people are awesome and you have such a beautiful culture, and another reason why people hate Iranians is because they (people who hate Iranians) are so uneducated that they can’t differentiate between a government and individuals. They’re ignorant. Don’t let them make you hide who you are, you’re Persian and be happy about it. I know it’s difficult when you receive hatred for it, but once you learn to rise above it things become easier. :)60 Reply

I would assume that their Islamic dictatorship whose Ayatollah daily spews out hatred against the West, Jews and Christendom, secret nuclear programs, sponsoring of terrorism, their vast network of global terroist activity, the Quds who have been repsonsible for several attacks and assassination attempts for decades and who owns drug plantations in Bolivia, genocidal hostility against Israel the only democracy of the Middle East are a few things that has rubbed people the wrong way.22 Reply- +1 y

1.8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Iran and the US used to be allies, going back to world war 2. We were friends.
In 1979 the Islamic revolution took place in Iran and then the official position of the new Iranian Islamic government was "death to Israel and death to the USA."
I don't hate Iranian people. Just like I don't hate the Chinese people. But the Iranian government and the Chinese communist government want me and my family dead.
It's not the Iranian people that are the problem. It's a hostile terrorist sponsoring Iranian government that is the problem.
As you listen and communicate with people ask them specifically if they dislike all Iranians or just the current hostile government of Iran.
Is that fair?23 Reply- +1 y
I don't think they want us dead. I think think they want to live in peace but we keep building bombs and rockets, using them on their friends and supplying them to their enemies.
Iran has nothing to gain from conflict with the United States.
They just want us to stop dropping bombs on them and their neighbors. - +1 y

+1 yIran generally has a history of being hostile to quite a few nations, such as the USA, Israel and various Western nations. Moreover, they have also been accused of sponsoring suicide bombing against civilians other countries (such as in Argentina), have a proven history of financing terrorist organizations (such as Hamas, Hezbollah and more), they are very strong supporters of Assad in his civil war. And the most recent thi g is that they were accused of trying to kidnap a Iranian-American journalist back to Iran.
The irony is that right before 1979, they were quite strong allies with the West, but everything changed in 1979310 Reply- +1 y
That said, my best assumption is prejudice against Iranians because of the nation itself. It can entirely be that Iranians have a poor reputation without the nation in some places, but I don’t know

@tartaarsaus When we look at it, Europe and America also support the PKK, YPG and Peshmerga, and everyone knows that they are terrorist organizations.

The rest is a load of crap. I'd like to apologise for these guys not being decent.

11.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. The US is responsible for the hatred toward Iran. The US government believes that no country except the US (and countries it approves of) should have nuclear weapons, and Iran doesn't agree. The US has done everything it can via constant propaganda to persuade others that the Iranians are terrorists, which they are NOT. Given the disgusting record of the US in terms of intervening in the politics of many countries and destroying their governments and replacing them with puppets of the US, Iran is right to develop nuclear weapons, since the only countries that the US won't harass are the ones with nuclear weapons.
22 Reply- +1 y
And if you look into it, Iran wasn't heart set on having nukes until we decided to make things hard on them in the first place.
It's like if your crazy gun toting neighbor constantly stepped on your flowers,
So you stole his newspapers and refused to give them back,
So he started throwing rocks through your windows,
So you went out to try to buy a gun to defend yourself just in case...
And he showed up to say "no way, this guy is a Maniac" we can let him have a gun, why would he even need a gun in thr first place, he'd probably shoot me with it.
And you're just like yeah, I want it to defend myself from my psycotic neighbor who has a whole room full of guns and keeps throwing rocks at my house. - +1 y
I think nukes are bad. There is no good that can come of using them at this point. (if there ever was)
But if I were Iran I'd definitely want one and feel like I had the right to have one.
I also wonder why myself. Iranian culture is spiritual and historical Shia and open minded. Only Americans and their propaganda have made Iran evil. If American media says someone is evil then they’re evil. No attention is given to the other side of things. Americans are brainwashed.
I’m Chinese and like Iran I think they’re the most open minded middle eastern country.29 Reply- +1 y
Oh, yeah, the country forcing women to wear a hijab, where gays are frequently murdered and with an internal military force to force the ideology of the Islamic Revolution is very open-minded
- +1 y
@tartaarsaus hijab is still better to head to toe niqab that Saudis wear and yet America shakes their hand openly. Hypocrites much?
- +1 y
@Vietnemin
Eh, just because the USA doesn’t give a crap about those policies in the KSA does not in any shape or form provide any support for the argument that Iran is the most open minded there.
Should I remind you that there are also countries in the Middle East where no such religious garments are obligatory? - +1 y
Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Qatar, Bahrain, Lebanon, Turkey, Oman and Cyprus
- +1 y
@tartaarsaus half those countries are that way because of traditional Iranian influence. Even in Iran hijab is not traditional but forced into them by politics. As for Israel you guys force everyone to take military training and in my personal experience many of you are rude asholes so I don’t count that country as a symbol of open mindedness. Even if we accept clothing standards in Iran the female education rate in Iran is very high as well compared to other middle eastern countries. Of course I’ll accept it’s not the most open minded middle eastern country but it’s more open minded and humane than Israel or Saudi Arabia at least in my opinion.
- +1 y
@Vietnemin
Lol so now you’re backtracking on your original point that they are the most open minded.
And if we’re talking about Israel, there is military conscription because it is literally essential to it surviving as a nation. That’s very different from forcing clothing because of close-minded reasons. - +1 y
And I mean, if the politics forces the hijab, that sort of immediately implies it is not open minded
- +1 y
@tartaarsaus well it is the most open minded if we look at a historical perspective rather than just modern day turmoil. All the open mindedness in the region originally came from Iran. Since the time of Cyrus in 600 BC they’ve preached freedom of religion and humane rule. So my original point is correct if we consider across all time. Anyways I don’t want to argue just for the r sake of arguing so I’m about done thanks

It most certainly was the Iranian people who did that! I may have only been 9 years old when that happened but I remember seeing the news reports every night on the 6 o clock news. I remember seeing the Iranian people in the streets chanting pumping theirs fists in the air and burning the American flag. The people of that country were fully supporting the Ayatollah Khomeini who was clearly a radical muslim.
It was ordinary Iranian people who raided the US embassy and took hostages.

I don't think Trump wants to destroy Iran.
But, he did definetly make the situation a lot worse by antagonizing them further and killing their military leaders with air strikes and drones.
Trump is afraid of Iran, and he thinks violence is the answer to everything. I don't agree with his actions, but I think he is truly just trying to protect the USA.
Unfortunately, he doesn't understand that dropping bombs on people usually encourages them to retaliate more than anything.
