Lawmakers in several statehouses this year want to stop lesson plans that focus on the centrality of slavery to American history.
Republican lawmakers in Arkansas, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri and South Dakota filed bills last month that, if enacted, would cut funding to K-12 schools and colleges that provide lessons derived from the award-winning project. The South Dakota bill has since been withdrawn.
Some historians say the bills are part of a larger effort by Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, to glorify a more white and patriarchal view of American history that downplays the ugly legacy of slavery and the contributions of Black people, Native Americans, women and others to the nation’s founding. What are your thoughts on this?
I personally find it very hypocritical that the same people claiming the left was erasing history for taking down statues of slave owners were “erasing history” when they’re now trying to ban the teaching of the American history in schools.
If America is ever going to grow as a country we can’t be cherry picking only the good parts we like about America’s history. By recognizing the bad parts it can prevent them from happening again.

But, not teaching something in school doesn't erase it from history. You are smart, you will see how much history they don't teach in school and you will be shocked.
Robert E. Lee was a Union General who supported the north and didn't want VA to succeed. He was actually slated to be the main commander of the Union army but when VA went South he said he couldn't invade his own home and kill his own brothers. He probably could have won the war for the south, but he chose not to and then went back to Gettysburg and gave a speech about unity, togeather, and advocated against violence.

But to be clear, I don't think anyone is saying that the schools shouldn't teach the history of slavery. I think the republicans are saying they shouldn't teach CRT which is totally not the same thing. They have always taught history, but CRT is new. It's not history, it's social manipulation.
But, here is my question. Wouldn't you rather grow up in the world MLK dreamed of and Morgan Freeman recommends where we don't teach kids to see eachother as different because of the color of their skin?
Of course slavery was awful, but realistically it wasn't about color. The slaves were black because the African tribes were more willing to sell their neighbors and Children than the Europeans were. Slavery was about economic power. It also ended 200 years ago, so nobody who saw it is still alive today.
Shouldn't we put it in the past and let it stay there instead of teaching kids they are different because of the color of their skin?
And if not, why not? What is the benefit to teaching youth that racism even exists instead of teaching that it is an outdated concept that has no legal or moral standing in America?

He also wrote the bill that sent thousands of young (almost exclusively black) men to prison and took them away from their families for first time non violent offenses. That was illegal before Joe Biden wrote his 1994 crime bill.

The idea that slavery is central to American history is absurd. It is certainly an "aspect" of American history as is segregation, the struggle for women's equal rights and workers' rights.
Contributions of Black people, Native Americans, women and others to the nation’s founding should absolutely be included in an honest portrayal of history. Critical Race Theory creates further racism and is designed to divide people. It's not a comprehensive history. It just replaces one biased curriculum with another.
History is history. It should explore both the good and the bad. History is complex and nuanced. Was Jefferson all bad because he owned slaves? Was Lincoln 100% virtuous? Was the Civil War actually about slavery? Was Robert E. Lee dishonorable? Are all "white" people racist?
History should be truthful and everything should be up for discussion. It would be great if the history of European and U. S. imperialism was honestly discussed. THAT would be a good topic for exploring racial and ethnic oppression and murder.

In regards to slavery, it has been going in since the dawn of civilization, not for 200-300 years. It wasn't invented by the U. S. It was abolished in the U. S. 82 years after the constitution was signed. I think segregation was a greater sin.
I have known and been friends with a great number of African Americans. They don't all have the same opinions as BLM activists. They're not all angry or feeling oppressed. The black community is not homogeneous. A few people don't speak for all blacks.
I was actually around to see the progress that has been made between the 60s and 70s until today. Yes, some bigotry still exists. But at least the laws have changed, and people, themselves, have come a long, LONG way since segregation. Interracial marriages are common. Blacks are ubiquitous in the entertainment industry and even in business.

They need to develop a trade so when they get out they have something to fall back on thats legal. You lose your rights once you go prison. There are two facts that I would like to bring to your attention. First of all is that American prisons do not deter or prevent future crime and secondly they were never really intended to be in the first place.
If you want to reduce victims and crime then we know how to do that. Norway is a good example of rehabilitation as a means to reduce recidivism rate (the rate of criminals committing crimes after leaving prison).
I am all for it if you want to implement their system and it will be cheaper, better for society since they will both be less likely to cause future trouble after leaving prison as well as actually have a future job and lastly, no slave labor.

i think any erasing of history is wrong from either side. Of course kids should be taught how pervasive slavery was and how oppressed each group has been/their contributions to building America.
