I think they ought to be covered under some sort of medical plan, whatever that may be, whether it's health insurance or a public option. As it stands right now we shell out a lot of tax dollars for people that don't need it, that abuse the system, which I resent. Helping out with a few tampons isn't a big deal. I don't know why some guys would be upset about it. Where I work there a lot of female employees. Some are better off then others naturally. What they do is is they all bring in a few tampons every now and then and they have a stash of them which they keep stocked to a certain amount in the ladies washroom. So if one of them unexpectedly needs one and doesn't have one, they can get one from the stash. They've been doing this for years. I'm not supposed to know about this but being the longest serving employee I more or less know everything that goes on there. I don't let on that I know, but I think it's great. To me that's real women's solidarity, and not the shit they say they say to each other on Facebook that they don't really mean. This of course doesn't have anything to do with your question, but I just felt like sharing it.
Anyone who considers a huge yacht the same as necessary products such as menstrual product has their head on backward. Each state that has a sales tax charges it differently. And some are really weird. State of Washington citizens are required to pay sales taxes on various products. Right across the river is Oregon, with no sales tax. Washington residents are supposed to pay sales tax to their state on products they buy out of state, but there is an almost steady stream of Washingtonians crossing the river with carloads. It would make more sense using income tax, taking a percentage of what they earn,
Sales tax on necessary items is regressive but I do think hospitality sales taxes that support things like convention centers and airports that the hospitality industry relies on for business are warranted.
The convention centers charge the events that happen there and the people who park there, as well as charging the concession people. The airports get a fee from each airline using them, and I think they also get a cut of the ticket sales.
They are? The prices are outrageous! I just bought three boxes and each was over $10 now. I've heard some governments discussing offering them for free, and some men crying angrily about this. What the hell do they expect women to do, just walk around bleeding into the street? If they were born women, they would never be so unsympathetic. Being a female has costs (aka THE PINK TAX), and we have zero choice on this one. It's not luxury, nor extravagance; it's pure necessity. And they're priced like they're not paper, cotton, and plastic, but some precious metal or gem or something.

I think the UK has a special "luxury" tax on non essential items which is just higher sales tax than otherwise. For whatever reason, they have considered tampons a luxury item so it is subject to this higher tax.
I believe luxury tax is just a term used to when people are referring to essential items. For example in California cold food is not taxed (in grocery stores at least) but hot food is taxed because it’s not necessary.

Yeah I used that term to loosely but my point is that essential items sold in stores don't have a sales tax in some states. Actually now that I think about in in California there isn’t a sales tax on menstrual products at least until Jan 2022.
It's never been a luxury to menstruate if it was I would have gifted it to my boyfriend a long time ago 😂. It's crazy that condoms (which are not a need) are free and are available at relatively low prices and sanitary pads and tampons which are a need are so expensive

I once had a medical issue caused by extreme emotional trauma that set my hormones off the charts. If not for menstrual cups I would have been going through 11 tampons an hour for nearly 60 days, and was still going through back-up pads. Feminine hygiene products are necessary goods. Even on normal months.

When we got to the register, she paid for it all on her welfare card and we left. Once outside the store, I handed her $75.00 cash, and I got the $100.00 worth of groceries. Nope Without tampons/pads/etc living day to day life as a woman would essentially be impossible for 3-14 days a month. In fact, it is-- any research at all into reasons why low-income women (especially those in 3rd world countries) miss work and you'll pull up data on how few women can actually afford sanitary products.
If it’s a literal luxury tax then obviously not. I believe they may be exempt from general sales tax up here and that seems pretty fair to me as it’s an essential item and related to hygiene/health so there’s a net benefit to society if it’s more affordable as it helps keep women in the workforce.

I don't think they should be taxed. I also thing women should be provided with free reusable menstrual products. Get a like kit when you're like 8 that has period underwear, cup, reusable pads and liners. Then have the ability to order more if needed.

The white cotton based products are coming from low income workers/farmers in Asia (imported). How is the production of such items going to be sustainable, yes the items that are "improved" for better comfort design should have luxury tax. There are usually offers on brands and store discounts all the time on these, even cashback. If you don't value the improved stuff buy the economy non-branded basic tampons. Men have to buy razer blades trimmers and dick socks yet we don't complain.
It's a known fact that girls use more toilet roll than guys. I've literally put a toilet roll in the bathroom in a shared bathroom between me and a girl and she used it all up in 3days! A roll lasts me 1month!
In America your banking system is a lot different. The banking system is a lot more controlled in Canada so a lot more people have bank accounts. Pretty much everything is done by direct deposit. So we don't have this card system that's in America since so many people don't have bank accounts. I guess because there's like weird rules if you have like a record you can't have a bank account and all kinds of other things. So we don't have a card system people just usually get their money put right into their bank account.
Then tampons, pad and menstrual products shouldn't be taxed either. It's not like the world wants women to free bleed and mess every surface they sit on.

There is no luxury tax on these items in the states.. In the UK yes but not here in the US.. And it costs money to make these items. So yes you must get off off of your ass and get a job if you want them, same with basic things like toilet paper.. To say that someone is entitled to the products and services of others at no charge is slavery.. And no the government should not pay for this.

This depends on the country. In my country, menstrual products have the low 9% VAT rate instead of the high 21% VAT rate.

I like this question. Especially as a Conservative Republican with Libertarian leanings.
As a Conservative, I'd like to know all the specifics of the idea so I try to make sure I get it right. But my Libertarian point of view is always on the lookout for a tax to cut and or eliminate entirely.
