Could the parents have stopped the Uvalde shooting?

He turned 18 and immediately went to the gun store. Lots of times the parents give them the guns. But how much could these parents have done?

Everybody says “better parenting” without offering ideas. I still think requiring parenting courses would help a lot. I bet there’s some abandonment in his background, perhaps from working 3 jobs to put food on the table.

Should the government be spending more on parental help as well as mental health?

I think this issue is deeply cultural. You could even argue this abortion controversy plays into it…

Abortion might be a necessary procedure in some cases, and I don’t think telling people what they should and shouldn’t do with their bodies is necessarily the right approach but dammit, we need to attack the root of this issue in that people NEED to be ready to parent a child if they’re going to risk having one. People need to be more responsible with their bodies and their primal urges. I’m not saying don’t go around and have sex if you want to… that’s your business and for you to decide, but at the very least, be smart about how you’re doing it, you know? No judging here, just being practical.

But I don’t think it’s right to be carrying an unborn child and then just take the inconsequential way out and abort it because you don’t want to parent the child. The issue is that people want a way out. Just don’t create a situation where you’d need a way out…? How about that? We need to instill better morals into our children that they will carry on into adulthood. That’s how we tackle this problem, and yes better parenting is necessary.

Statistics show very clearly and convincingly that the lack of parents in a child’s upbringing is hugely detrimental to them. It starts with all of us individually. Do better for you, your future, and your future children’s future. Be smart about who you make apart of your life. That’s all.

Honestly i totally agree with parent school. Though we prob disagree on abortion.

I know Texas and the region... schools and government will do ANYTHING to leave you alone with the issue, they will give you all the pills you want for your kids to take, and they will also put you on welfare checks till your children are 18

at least here in Southern Texas, that's how it goes... you will never get the proper health from schools or the government, just stuff your kids with all the drugs possible, till they lose their senses and go numb AF... maybe it is different for other families but none that I know of

Yes she could have done more. The mom was a crackhead and the kids father flew the coop. He basically had no parenting. People aren't listing off every specific way in which he should have received better parenting because the list would be endless.

This guy was too stupid to even graduate school yet he's considered smart enough to be responsible for a gun. Even if his parents didn't care I think the gun shop owners should have been more alert and asked more questions.

i chose no, but being attentive to a child/adult/teenager is very important. i imagine being separated from the world and the only people you'd rely on is family. it's a tough issue. you can't blame them but you can.

did his parent's recognize his mental illness? probably not. did they know he was depressed and bullied? i doubt it. a lot of the blame is because people that are attacked by verbal abuse (from his grandmother) don't have anyone to talk to.

i think there were only 2 targets. the grandmother and the teacher. the kids were casualties of a demented person

Yes if I have a kid in school and I heard a shooter was attacking them I would go in with my AR-15 and kill the bastard my self. Hell I don’t have kids and I would still go in and prevent the shooter from shooting any more kids. Of course in my county there’s more guns then people

Being a parent myself I have always done my best in that every single firearm I actually own has always had a trigger lock device and securely stored with ammunition stored separately. So yes I think more lawsuits should be brought against teenagers with Absolute Idiot Parents!

Well, from what I hear they weren't the best parents. I don't know if the little guy had much of a chance growing up.

Not excusing what he did mind you. I don't know what kind of mind could conceive of doing what he did.

There should be more income support for parents and better-functioning child welfare systems. It's not easy to be a parent, so there should be counseling and other forms of support.

One thing I'd be concerned about is people being fearful that they'd lose custody of their kids if they reach out for help, so there would need to be some protection for those who need help.

Yeah. Though I've seen poor people who care about their kids and the houses are clean and they help with their homework. And I've seen trash dumps i wouldn't let my cat live in. Not sure the latter deserves to keep their kids.

What's the point of placing some level of blame at this point? I agree, some level of responsibility were initially on his immediate family, however if the parents were doing their best... what if he got it from someplace else?

A lot of these no hope cases could be mitigated by free healthcare, vocational education and a universal basic income.
