Basically they think that they're freeing it from a US/NATO imposed coup regime.

a lot of people ask why Putin called it a "special military operation". in my opinion, it's because Russia and Ukraine have a long, intertwined history so for a Russian president to say that we're going to war with Ukraine would be like the a president of the US saying that we're going to war with Canada.

The Russian people, probably not but the propaganda would have them believe that.
Truth is that Putin has walked Russia into a trap, now they are bogged down in a war that will be a pyhric victory if they win and a humiliation if they withdraw.
It's made Russia look militarily and economically look weak on the international stage and its costing them money they haven't got and of course the loss of revenue from sanctions has set them back years. Worse still is that America is making money out of the whole thing.

Also, I don't understand what you mean with long, intertwined history. Ukraine is a sovereign nation and became so in 1991.

And no, they don't think they are freeing it. They were trying to reclaim it. But when Ukraine kicked that ass, they began to re-think the strategy. I don't think they will try to make such a claim again in the near future. As for now, they are just trying to capture Donbas. Which they have basically held a majority of land since 2010.

Well... they aren't really that wrong.

If you consider the colonial and slave history of NATO states, you'll see it's more or less being repeated under the banner of "security" and "business" in modern times.

Not saying Russia and China are completely right. But the USA is not the messiah and redeemer it likes to pretend it is.

The American empire is a threat to global peace as much as the Soviet Union was. The mistake Europe made was not breaking up or counterbalancing the USA like it did the Soviets.

Talk to a Ukrainian. Ask them if they feel if Russians are just trying to make a point about the American Empire? Ask them if they feel these should be factors to consider when it comes to the thousands of Ukrainians killed, the millions displaced, and the cities that have been destroyed.

I don't think it's possible to know how Russians really feel about the war. Remember that in Russia telling the truth can get you a ticket to the gulag. Which is a forced labour camp.

You can make a fairly educated guess. So far it looks like many people have swallowed the propaganda. This is especially true since the government has shielded the people in the heartlands from the war by pushing the pain and suffering onto the people in more remote and insignificant regions.

In other words, the people who matter for Russia has been able to maintain their life as "normal" and are oblivious to the damages which makes them much easier to convince of whatever the government wants them to think.

@Soteris I imagine most Russians believe whatever lies the state media tells them. It's easier to open another bottle of vodka than to think for yourself.
