Should Rainbow Crosswalks be Eliminated?

Question

With the Supreme Court's recent and possible future decisions, is it time to eliminate Rainbow Crosswalks? Several cities in the US have them, including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, San Antonio, San Francisco and Seattle. By the way, some people don't like them because the paint makes it slippery in rain for both pedestrians and vehicles.

I don't like how much they cost. Looking at the pic it should only take 6 cans of colored paint and one of white.

But one in Australia turned into $150,000 by the time local gov't got done. Thats because you need signage This Is A Rainbow crossing... (for the odd passing rainbow I suppose). Then you need signage to tell motorists they are approaching a rainbow crossing. And a sign to establish a 40 KMPH zone at the crossing. Then you need pedestrian lights so people can walk on it and admire the workmanship of the paint job. Finally you need more signage to tell motorists they are leaving a rainbow crossing zone.

So it rapidly escalates from those 6 cans.

I doubt that would happen because such crosswalks are solely under local or state jurisdiction and a rainbow crosswalk is an example of government free speech.

That said, given the record of the OT2021 Supreme Court, I could see them overturning the 2015 5-4 decision in WALKER, CHAIRMAN, TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF
MOTOR VEHICLES BOARD, ET AL. v. TEXAS

No they're cool. Though I think they should always be on signaled crossings not marked crossings without a signal to walk, as they confuse guide dogs.

I just heard about this on a radio show but I forget the city they were talking about. The city council decided to get rid of four sheriff deputies to save money. They then spent $80,000 on these lgbtqrst crosswalks.

About 40 years ago, my city had an area that was used for visiting dignitaries to stand and review a parade in their honor. The paint was frequently painted with some design honoring the visitor. We saw many more accidents at that particular location when it was raining, resulting in lawsuits against the city, and the practice was eventually abandoned.

Yes it needs to go. I don’t care what their choice is whether you like men or women or both or what but it’s gotten out of hand. Sometimes I wonder if it’s the gov’t itself that does this to separate people so that we’re too mad w one another that we aren’t looking at what’s really going on. But it does need to go. All I ever heard was they just wanted to be accepted, treated normal but than shit like this comes up which doesn’t help your case. If anything it makes a lot of people not like them more. Especially pride parades where people are practically naked, wearing leather, chains, etc. How is that helping them to be accepted w out drawing all this negative attention?

The only city I think shouldn’t be allowed to paint rainbow cross walks in Washington D. C. the rainbow flag is controversial D. C is suppose to represent our entire country if half the country disagree with homosexuality and gay marriage then the flag should be allowed to paint in on the streets.

how individual cities and locality go for it. If your city wants to represent there cities or local governments as a gay pride city or state go for it. The federal government shouldn’t be allowed to have that power.

of course the federal government is supposed to have less power then the states. The idea that the federal government isn’t allowed to set up a state religion is correct. But if Utah want to make Mormonism as the state religion that is Utahs right. Federal government can’t make Mormonism as the religion of the entire United States but Utah is allowed to have Mormonism and the religion of the state. Also, they're paid for by tax dollars and I disagree with our tax dollars being used by the city for political statements.

What would the supreme court have to do with any of that? They have no authority or interest in how a city paints its crosswalks.

If they are an actual safety hazard, then they should be done away with and replaced with a new paint (or texture) that doesn't pose a risk.
