Should Rainbow Crosswalks be Eliminated?

Rainbow Crosswalk in Seattle

With the Supreme Court's recent and possible future decisions, is it time to eliminate Rainbow Crosswalks? Several cities in the US have them, including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, San Antonio, San Francisco and Seattle.

By the way, some people don't like them because the paint makes it slippery in rain for both pedestrians and vehicles.

Thanks for everyone's opinions on this. I'm not taking a stance one way or the other on this topic, but find it interesting that so many people are thinking the Supreme Court's Roe v Wade decision will affect so many other things. The question of rainbow crosswalks has made the news in several cities, and I thought it might be interesting to get the opinions of G@G members.

I don't like how much they cost. Looking at the pic it should only take 6 cans of colored paint and one of white.

But one in Australia turned into $150,000 by the time local gov't got done. Thats because you need signage This Is A Rainbow crossing... (for the odd passing rainbow I suppose). Then you need signage to tell motorists they are approaching a rainbow crossing. And a sign to establish a 40 KMPH zone at the crossing. Then you need pedestrian lights so people can walk on it and admire the workmanship of the paint job. Finally you need more signage to tell motorists they are leaving a rainbow crossing zone.

So it rapidly escalates from those 6 cans.

I doubt that would happen because such crosswalks are solely under local or state jurisdiction and a rainbow crosswalk is an example of government free speech.

That said, given the record of the OT2021 Supreme Court, I could see them overturning the 2015 5-4 decision in WALKER, CHAIRMAN, TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF

No they're cool. Though I think they should always be on signaled crossings not marked crossings without a signal to walk, as they confuse guide dogs.

I just heard about this on a radio show but I forget the city they were talking about. The city council decided to get rid of four sheriff deputies to save money. They then spent $80,000 on these lgbtqrst crosswalks.

About 40 years ago, my city had an area that was used for visiting dignitaries to stand and review a parade in their honor. The paint was frequently painted with some design honoring the visitor. We saw many more accidents at that particular location when it was raining, resulting in lawsuits against the city, and the practice was eventually abandoned.

I'd like to clarify my original comments. I stated the LGBTQ community doesn't aid in the preservation of our liberties. What I meant to say was AS A COMMUNITY, they don't. What I'm trying to say is members of the community that serve in the Armed Forces, government agencies, and other government funded organizations do AS INDIVIDUALS, but not as a community like the military community. I wanted to ensure that folks understand what I'm really saying. This would apply to basically almost every group in our country, where people from other groups come together to serve, etc.

But still holding to my point in that if it isn't directly sanctioned by the government, then they have no business being involved, especially in funding.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s the gov’t itself that does this to separate people so that we’re too mad w one another that we aren’t looking at what’s really going on. But it does need to go. how individual cities and locality go for it. If your city wants to represent there cities or local governments as a gay pride city or state go for it. The federal government shouldn’t be allowed to have that power.

Also, they're paid for by tax dollars and I disagree with our tax dollars being used by the city for political statements.

It just occurred to me that the reason they were white and black striped COULD be for people that have vision problems like, maybe it helps them see where they should safely cross the roads. I never implied that I wanted them removed. Just reporting what others have said, and looking for G@G opinions. In some cases, they have been painted with latex paint and they are slippery, a few accidents have happened on them.
