In your opinion when does the cultural appreciation crosses the line and turns into cultural appropriation?
That's Rita Pereira, a Portuguese actress and model that came under social network fire for doing the dreads you see in the second picture.
I think it's absolutely ridiculous and an half-assed political correctness attempt that borders on moronic calling it cultural appropriation, and she herself has come out saying it's appreciation for black culture.
Have we no bigger problems than what a woman, even a minor celebrity, tells her hairdresser to do? It's a hairstyle, not a Klan rally.
Grow up. And go watch "Dear White People" if you want to know what cultural appropriation actually is.03 Reply
Asker+1 yWhy are you telling me to grow up? I'm just asking a question I'm not saying it is cultural appropriation or offending anyone

+1 yDepends on how the person interacts with those cultures. If they have no respect or admiration for the cultures theyre imitating, then yes its appropriation. I dont know those 2 women so i didn't vote.

+1 yCultural appropriation only occurs at the point at which the originating peoples are no longer permitted to participate in their own culture. Some might suggest it also happens when the culture is so perverted from its origins that itβs unrecognizable. I might be persuaded by some evidence to that point. However, i would argue that if a people were deeply invested in their culture, they would be diligent about preserving the integrity of it for themselves and their descendants. You donβt get to sit back and watch someone else destroy something you love just so you can play the martyr later. I think thatβs at the heart of this debate right now. People donβt want to admit their own responsibility in the perversion of their culture, and playing the virtuous victim is very popular right now.
00 Reply 3.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. The idea of cultural appropriation is stupid.
many examples over time, 1 we associate tea drinking as a primary British thing but it came from China. 2 Kanji and Ramen we associate these things with Japan both come from again China. 3 many spices and style of dress around the Mediterranean and middle eastern countries have shared resources architectural design food spices clothing etc. the French love coffee which come from Africa. Cars and the printing press comes from Germany which has benefited people for east to west and everywhere in between. All modern day cultures have been taken from another culture and implemented in there own culture, Itβs not cultural appropriation or cultural appreciation itβs just a natural fact of the human condition

I think the comments from the Indigenous are worth reading.

+1 yCultural appropriation - black people who claim cultural appropriation is a thing speaking English.
Thatβs cultural appropriation. For those this applies to, time to learn a West African dialect and stop using English. Language is a part of culture.04 Reply- +1 y
Globalization - using American tax dollars to fund other countries.
English is a language. Language is part of culture. If youβre not English or of English decent, you have appropriated a part of someone elseβs culture by speaking English.
Speak a west African dialect and stop being a hypocrite.
You canβt do those things and not be a hypocrite if you claim cultural appropriation is a thing. - +1 y
Africa is extremely huge. You have West, East, North, South & Central. Globalization as in β Globalization refers to the spread of the flow of financial products, goods, technology, information, and jobs across national borders and cultures. In economic terms, it describes an interdependence of nations around the globe fostered through free trade.β ~ Google

+1 yCulteral appropriation only exsists by people who are jealous of others using a style they alsohave and know the other person or people looks better than them. True fact
10 Reply There is no such thing as cultural appropriation. If there was, it'd be a massive glass roof where even these militants with so much free time on their hands would be under it.
10 Reply12.1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. It doesn't.
Only Americans are anal about that sort of thing. Mainly as only Americans are insecure about having no culture, or taste of appreciation.
00 Reply18.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Dont know. I imagine a rising tide of that culture complaining will tell me. Kinda like how Injuns dont care about the Redskins football logo, but they do care about a pipeline surging through their backyard.

+1 yAccording to my Mexican friend. Cultural appropriation happens when a group profiteers off another culture. Making a product an expensive exotic luxury while giving nothing tobthe creators.
00 Reply 8.1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. They are the same thing just one is labeled as a bad thing and the other is a good thing. The line a lot of SJWs draw is the skin color of the person engaging in the act.
00 ReplyIt becomes appropriation when the cultural expression stops being a special thing.
