No, it's because people back in the day were mostly peasants and had many children to help them with their farms. Urbanization made children a liability, not an asset. Women had less children, and most housework was now done by machines (ovens became easy to use, laundry machines were invented, etc) so housewives had less work to do at home. Women started getting educated and picked up part time jobs. Slowly they joined the workforce.

Being a housewife before the 1950s was a tough job. If women went to work then, there would be no one to take care of the house. It was necessary. But by the 1950s most tasks were done automatically by machines. Office work didn't require much physical strength. So women realized that they could gain their idenpendence and make money since they can do an equally good job as men in the office.
