Is this unnecessarily provocative?

"... unnecessarily provocative?"
Absolutely not! The US Navy regularly transits international waters with our warships, especially those other nations dispute and claim to be theirs. This isn't the first time, nor will it be the last time US warships do this.
The one time a nation attempted to start a fight over disputed international waters, Libya lost 4 of their fighter jets while the 2 US Navy F-14's returned unharmed back to their carrier.
Russia routinely sends its bombers toward Alaska in a way to purposely provoke a response. Our USAF F-22's escort them back out to international airspace. At the same time, both the Russians and US jets are taking pictures of each other's aircraft to record any changes in them.
It is, but the U. S. can't let China think it runs ish.
The Chinese regime is in a lot of social and economic trouble right now, forcing them to start shooting to preserve their own power is not something we need to do when, as communist states inevitably do, it collapses under the weight of its own incompetence.
No. If China can do what it has done in the way of threats to Taiwan, why should the US not do a bit of sabre rattling, too.
Thank you for MHG!

China has been baiting us. Sending warship through the Taiwan straight does nothing to show resolve. China knows better already. When we send an AC Carrier Group through the straight with all the AC still aboard china will know where every ship is and hypersonic missile those ships to Davy Jones’s Locker.
and they will have destroyed 20% of our naval assets.
its amateurish to think that sending a ship nearby will stop China at all. There are so many officers that should be so embarrassed by this childlike show of force knowing that we do not have the national resolve to back it up.
Biden will be a wartime Resident, but of the civil war he so desperately wants.
Time is on China’s side, which is why they did not take the bait and start a war over the recent provocations. They have reacted with limited sanctions and by unambiguously siding with Russia regarding Ukraine. It is no accident that the US just lost (by a huge margin) a UN General Assembly vote condemning Russia. Our ships are no threat given their anti-ship missile and Russia’s hypersonic missiles. Our submarines are more of a problem for them. But with time and continued de-dollarization, the US will have much more difficulty projecting force in the region.
I don't understand your view. Do you think putting warships in the South China Sea is a provocation? China has created military bases there. And again, a conflict in that region is going to have a global impact on oil prices and trade. Not to mention it will force Japan and other nations in the to re-arm.
Not provocative at all. The Taiwan Strait is considered international waters by just about every country except China. Every country has the right to sail their ships through it. The US Navy has been doing it for decades, as part of the Navy's global deployment.
This is just another “freedom of navigation” operation.
Not really, no. It's a show of force
I think it is a dangerous provocation.
