I mean we use Damn, shit, hell, ass, bitch, etc... All the time on TV. Why should the F word be any different?

+1 yThat’s kind of my feeling about curse words in general. It’s all so arbitrarily arrived at. “Don’t say ‘fuck’ in public!” “Ok, but…why?” And no one can give you any rational answer, they’re just working off this weird tradition that was taught to us but never explained. ALWAYS be wary of any concept that’s taught to you but can’t be thoroughly explained to a point of sound reasoning.
These “levels” of “bad” words are exactly what I’m talking about. Some people would be offended if you said “shit”, but if you said “crap” instead, no one would care, even though the word has the exact same definition and context.
Whoever decided words could be “bad” (outside of pointed slurs developed to denigrate or dehumanize individuals or certain groups of individuals) probably came up with this stuff before any other person alive on this planet was born. Remember that “tradition” is just peer pressure from dead people, lmao. So I’d say it’s very fair to reassess this tired old custom that none of us seem to know why we started.

+1 yHell yeah!! I don't see what the point of it is!! You can say "F', "freak", "frig", "frick", "futz", "Frank", or any other word of that sort and EVERYBODY KNOWS what word you're AVOIDING saying so, if they already know it, chances are, they're saying it in their minds! So, what's the point of banning people from saying it? And, in most cases, when someone that likes to think they're holier than thou hears someone say it, they don't even say anything about it so, just let us fucking saying it and be done with it, already!! As long as it's not being over-done like a friend of mine in Erie does.
"Fuckin', I fuckin' went to the fuckin' store to fuckin' get some fucking potato chips." And, if he can't quite think of what he was gonna say for a couple seconds, he'll go, "... and fuckin' then, I fuckin', fuckin', fuckin', fuckin', got some fucking beer, too!"

+1 yThe problem I have with the F word is people use it too much, they use it as a noun, a verb, a adjective, it can be used for anything. It has lost its meaning when people use it that much.
Then I don't know what they are talking about cause I can't understand them.
I'm all for no censorship though so sure go for it.

What's funny is that in the USA, the word "cunt" is sooooooooo offensive, primarily to women. But in the UK, it's used to describe men, or a whole host of things, the same way we use the word "shit". LOL
- +1 y
@loveslongnails Yeah, I know that. (I think I've heard that about Australians, too.)
But it's still a dig or insult, just not as harsh.
They must have other words that are the equivalent, for when they really want to dig at someone.
We need a variety of words for different situations. - +1 y
I don't know, but I'll ask my Brit friends " what's worse than calling someone a cunt, in the UK". LOL
Actually, I like calling men who act like stupid bitches "cunts". There's something so right about it. - +1 y
@loveslongnails I almost never call anyone that word. Though I have a couple of girls/women, not to their face. God, it feels good to let that out every once in a while.
My sister accidentally cc'd me on a nasty email where she called me one, to her partner. It wasn't 'to my face', so that's the only time I've ever known it to be used.
I have to admit, I do like calling some men pussies once in a while. That also feels satisfying. So I get what you mean. - +1 y
Amanda... you DO realize that it's totally about conditioning in your particular language, don't you?
- +1 y
The term "cunt" is no more demeaning in one culture that the word "pussy" is in another. If EVER there were an argument for "social norms", this would be it! So don't be such a pussy. :)
- +1 y
@loveslongnails You're arguing it as if word usage is not decided by cultures.
Of course some words are harsher than others. And it changes over time. What was once considered acceptable before, may later be not. Forget about word etymology. It's the present day culture that ultimately decides.
There are always going to be every gradient of word from humorous to mildly offensive to being meant to be extremely offensive. Some people are more sensitive to others (thus, this asker's q) but it's not me, alone, who decided that word, in the West, is offensive. The 'N' word got squashed. And much later taken over by people of the community, who ultimately lessened its power. - +1 y
The "N" word is only squashed when white people use it, Amanda. I agree, offensive word acceptance comes and goes. But in Britain, their word has been around forever!
- +1 y
@loveslongnails "The "N" word is only squashed when white people use it, Amanda."
I don't know what your point is there. This doesn't make sense.
The specific words don't matter.
Point is, there will always be some.

I don't mind "fuck" because it's not 'at' someone. It's an act. For many, there are good associations with it.
Although, to tell someone to 'fuck off' is, of course, aggressive. (But some people deserve it.)
- +1 y
My point about the N word is that black people call OTHER black people the N word all the time. But you can't do that if you're a white person. Get it?
- +1 y
@loveslongnails Still don't get your point. Because that was my point. They RECLAIMED the word to nullify its power.
- +1 y
No they didn't "RE-claim" anything darling. It's always been there in their own community, just as it's always been a derogatory term when whites use it. When they use it among themselves, it's conversation. When YOU use it about a black person, it's specifically derogatory, and don't even think it isn't powerfully upsetting coming from a whitey.

Because at it's heart fuck still means have sex and we Americans are pretty weird and puritanical about that.
40 ReplyThe words you mentioned are not acceptable in many places or situations. Many companies will not allow those words to be used when talking (arguing) with their employees. They consider it abusive language. Employees are instructed to give a warning about it and if it continues to end the conversation. On a telephone call they hang up. In person they call security to have the person removed from the building.

+1 yI agree. I think people care too much about cursing in general. They’re literally just words.
I understand people being offended if you were to swear in front of their kids (personally, I swear in front of my daughter. I don’t care. Even if she were to start cursing, I would allow it.) but when grown ass adults get all bothered and offended when they hear a couple curse words, it’s like bruh 💀 what are you, 5 years old?00 Reply
+1 yMy opinion is going to be different from that of the average American Christian, but I don't believe in the notion of "swear words." What is considered one person's swear word is another person's everyday word. People say God is separate from the education system, but today's teachers are very much the same as 1950s teachers minus the overt racism. Teachers are still very sexist especially in middle school.

+1 yIt should but those old farts who run tv and YouTube are stuck in there old ways or want to be child friendly for that extra buck
00 Reply I don't think it should be uncensored. I'm not American but here in the UK swearing is used fairly freely and i feel it says a lot about a person if they can't communicate without swearing.
