One time I told this person I have always been a fan of this celebrity I have never met before for years.
Afterwards they said to me “I have never understood why they are so popular.”

It hurt my feelings what they said to me. They said this hurtful comment to me after I told them I have always been a fan.

Mostly just thoughtless. It was your opening to explain what you admired about the celeb. If someone says "I don't get Miley Cyrus" I say "Listen to her cover of 'You're Gonna Leave Me Lonesome When You Go" or "Jolene" with Dolly Parton"

I have been racking my brain for two days trying to remember the name of the Lonesome When You Go song.
I have never been a big fan of Miley Cyrus, but only because her song choices.
Her pop phase was meh?
Give that girl a mic and an acoustic guitar, I will listen to her sing all day.
