For argument's sake, if you only live once and have no soul to continue on, then you should logically be a hedonist and live for your own pleasures and lusts. Why would you care how your actions affect others or even have a moral code?
Too many people think "Socialists" want to spread ALL the profits to everyone, including those who do no work at all. That's simply not true. I believe a Socialist's reward would be a world where nobody was lacking for food, clothing and shelter, and could contribute their talents to a progressive society.
By the way, taxes are a form of socialism. Capitalism is when you have enough power and capital that you can influence the government to pass laws that allow you pay less in taxes. The problem with capitalism is that human greed takes over and eventually alienates those doing the work.

I mean, I would argue that our current civilization is a product of communities sharing "a little heart" between each other rather than capitalism trying to push everyone else down to elevate themselves by comparison.
In fact, you put it very well when saying "What's their reward in the grand scheme of the very vast and large milky way galaxy?", and the answer to that would be, the very galaxy itself since socialism would be the fastest way to get to the stage where we can actually start to explore outside our solar system. It is the path towards the future, simple as that.
Socialists genocide an rob their populations. Thereās nothing nice about them. Itās an evil ideology that attempts to rape the masses so that a small handle in the party elite can live lavishly off of everyone else suffering. History is crystal clear on that. Each socialist cult believes they will be the party elite and successfully purge other party sects once they grasp power. Socialists are megalomaniacs.
Having a heart requires more than simply wanting to give away things for free, particularity things that don't belong do you. (As that is heartless for the person you took it from) You have to think about the long term picture.
Socialism is good for thee but not for me. This is what all socialists believe. Burnie sanders is a democratic socialist even though capitalism has made him rich. He has had multi-million dollar book deals and oens 3 very nice houses. Socialism is rich people trying to convince poor people that they should be happy being poor. To quote burnie ābread lines are good, that means there is breadā.
Who says a Socialist has more heart? Do socialists donate to charities? Do socialists become first responders? When was the last time you saw a socialists do anything to help anyone? I cannot think of a single instance that a socialists actually made things better for anyone besides socialism.
