What do you think of people who put loud giant exhaust pipes on their car and disturb the neighborhood?

There's an asshole at my work who put a giant exhaust pipe on a small car and we've had multiple complaints about how loud it is. I know in my state we have laws against illegal modifications and how loud someone's car can be, but no one seems to be enforcing it.

My question though is, WHY? Is there some practical purpose of putting a giant exhaust pipe on your car or are you simply trying to compensate for something?

I thought the point of a muffler was to MUFFLE the sound, hence the name.

ObnoxiousI think those guys do this because they are loud obnoxious who feel the need to force everyone around to see them.


There may a physiological underpinning to this.
Maybe they are empty inside and feel the need to make strangers around them acknowledge their existence.


This goes for people who drive around playing loud music.

The only justifiable reason is that something like a straight pipe from the headers would be less restricting, & give out more horsepower. But if you’re not doing that on a performance or even a street tuned car then kys.

Sounds like what my Grandpa did when He was young. Personally I think it's stupid. At least back in my Grandpa's day, removing the muffler actually gave you more power.
