Might have to do with diet. For example, the Netherlands (tallest people in the world) have an average per capita meat consumption of a whopping ~100kg/year. The US only has ~70kg/year. Mexico has only ~47kg/year. The Philippines (some of the shortest people in the world) has only ~4kg/year.

Japanese of my generation also used to be really short. Yet these days you see Japanese skyrocketing including a lot of Japanese these days over 6 feet (over 182cm) tall, and the main difference I see is growing consumption of meat and dairy. In my generation, Japanese consumed relatively little meat and dairy.

Yes, socioeconomic inequality and poverty affect height because really poor folk's malnourishment can cause them to be shorter and smaller than average.

my mom had a better childhood than I did, she is 10 cm taller than me, because she had a great diet growing up. I am 10 cm shorter because I was relatively malnourished than her.

Huge yes to this idea. I mean the Vikings were considered huge compared to the farmer types. True they grew food too, but how much can you grow in the snow? You have to eat meat. Mongols when they were shitting all over the world... horse meat and horse milk.

I mean for reals if you're a body builder, what do they tell you to get more of? Protein.

Some of those fuckers are huge. But yeah in general they tend to be short. Genetics, diet, a lazy-ass lifestyle as children... I really don't know. I'm white and my half Mexican kid turned out to be taller than me. ... still lazy though. Has to work harder than I ever did now, because he did jack shit and made stupid decisions.

It is simply a matter of genetics, the native populations of South America were very short and this caused the Hispanics to become short, later with the colonisation of the Europeans, the stature rose slightly.

I'm from Peru and 5'7 myself. My father is 5'11 and younger brother is 6ft. Then again, we got mixed with some European genes. It's genetics mainly.

The short hispanics are likely native ones without any taller relatives.

80% of them are mixed with Natives. And Natives were reputed for being as we call them in Poland, "karakans". The ones that have pure Spanish blood tend to be taller, but the Mestizos and Indigenous are usually karakans.

Many Spanish conquistadors took Native women as wives. Many of the Native Americans in Meso-America and S. America were short. The Mayans, for example were short people.
