If men and women both get drafted who will keep our economy running if young men and women are drafted?

Typically, when men went off to war, while some women went off to war too, many women stayed back and ran the country’s companies and worked in manufacturing. They also took care and protected their children and the sick. Women still do for the most part. So who would do all of this if both able bodied young men and women were drafted?

Personally I'm not a fan of conscripting both sexes let alone the concept of conscription in general. I think a mercenary army of volunteers is superior to an army of slaves.

Yet if we're moving in this society that tries to divorce gender roles as much as possible from biology, then I suspect such a society would start to practically work towards a configuration of leaving some men and women behind who might be better suited to run the economy doing that and conscript the rest or vice versa (conscript the people best fit for military roles and leave the rest behind to run the economy).

A problem I'd see in that case is still the biological reality of the reproductive differences. If it so happens that the majority of the population conscripted are women and it's the men left behind to run the economy, that doesn't look good as far as birth rates required to sustain economies if most of those women are killed.

If you’re going to win a war- you’d either need mainly men or a mix, still dominated by men. Replacing solders with robots will take years and I mean years.

Same: conscription seems unnecessary for the most part and I find it deeply unethical. At least people involved in the military should be able to volunteer and receive an agreeable payment for their services rather than be forced to kill and possibly die against their will.

I suspect if such a society took shape though and it was at least approximating a meritocracy and not driven by gender quotas, we would still find the majority of soldiers (especially those who fight in the front lines and do the most physically demanding jobs) to be males.

Females can actually make excellent snipers from what little I understand about military (superior color perception and generally less fidgety than men) and we have the legendary Lyudmila Pavlichenko with 309 confirmed kills.


Yet I suspect there will be more roles where men excel simply due to their physiological differences than women. So we might still end up with mostly men fighting and women staying behind to run the economy.

Seniors, teens, people with exceptions etc. Basically if it gets bad enough the government steps in with work assignments, they decide how resources are allocated and what businessman are essential to the war time effort. You can't think politically correct about war just because you have been sheltered from it. It is possible for children and seniors to be the ones running our economy while the fighting age citizens are at war.

Children and the elderly cannot just switch gears and learn how to do construction or handle medicine or teach algebra or work in a factory. They can’t just shift gears. Young able bodied people can though. One of the reasons Jonestown failed was because they had to rely on the elderly and children to do most of the work. That’s just one example, too. Really very thoughtless of you. But people have to learn the hard way, unfortunately.
