What has opened your eyes recently?

One that's opened my eyes recently is the Emancipation proclamation made by Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln has long been the most revered man ever to be president, but I firmly believe that he isn't all what he was made up to be, and a lot of the praise comes from him being viewed as a martr after John Wilkes Booth killed him in Ford's theater.

The Emancipation proclamation was issued to stop European nations from getting involved, on the side of the Confederates as they were missing their exports that the Union had blockaded. If the Union had a noble cause to right for, like ending slavery, Europe would stay out of it. So he issued the Emancipation proclamation to make the war about ending slavery, instead of just being about preserving the Union.

Buuuuut, if you read the proclamation, you'll see that in the states loyal to the union, in which slavery was legal, that being Kentucky, Delaware, Maryland, and Missouri, none of the slaves there would be freed. And union forces were pushing in Tennessee and Arkansas, none of the slaves there would be free, either, and in New Orleans, none of the slaves there would be free, either. He only declared that slaves in states which were in active rebellion, which he doesn't control, would be freed. But even then, the slaves later on would he held as contraband, and put to work.

So to recap, he issued a proclamation to change the cause of the war from preserving the union, to freeing the slaves. However
-No slaves in Northern slave states would be freed
-No slaves in southern states that have been occupied will be freed
-He can't free slaves in southern states, because he doesn't control them
-Slaves in the future, occupied territory will simply be put to work for the union's military effort

One may ask "then what the hell is he saying"?

The answer, sadly, is that the emancipation proclamation was nothing more than a dishonest political stunt. It seems doing such a thing is not a new act at all😞

I googled why teachers have a reputation for getting paid poorly. It really opened my eyes since I'm studying to be a teacher right now.

In the US, 65K is considered to be a good salary. Teachers are paid depending on the state laws, varying between 40K to 70K, with an average of around 55K.

In Australia, 90K is a good salary. Teachers start with 88K yearly and are paid upwards of 110K depending on how long they've had the job. When you factor in the amount of time off, that easily makes it a high paying job. On top of all of that, the teacher shortage in the country means the salaries will likely increase, to incentivise more people to take on the job.

It's crazy to me how the same job can be viewed in completely different lights depending on where you live 😁

Disagree. The word itself can be pretty yucky, but some people might just have more partners than others, and that's totally fine! It's all about being safe and respectful, no matter what your sex life looks like. The shaming part? That's what needs to go.

I'm a republican, too. But Abraham Lincoln isn't the angel he's made out to be, at all. He allowed awful things to go unpunished
