1 yPeople mistake you for Indian because they are idiots. I’m Asian and people frequently think I’m Chinese or Japanese. Their assumption is a form of racism called micro aggressions. This form of racism isn’t intentional but it’s still insulting. Things like assuming you like hot sauce because you’re Hispanic, assuming that since you’re trans you want to fuck men, assuming you own a store because you’re Korean, saying “I wish I was Asian because then I’d be good at math”, or thinking that all Brazilian women have big asses, or that all black men have large penises.
ALL of these things are racist and types of micro aggressions. All are based on social biases and cultural assumptions. And unfortunately they are things we have to deal with. But take solace in the knowledge that you are not alone in this.132 ReplyBy the way, another form of a micro aggression that is the most common is asking where you are from. As if because I’m not white I can’t be American.
www.instagram.com/.../?igsh=MWQ1ZGUxMzBkMA==No, you don't look Japanese or Chinese. You're probably Cambodian, Vietnamese or Nepalese, right?
@Walksbehindtherows did you not read what wrote? You are being racist. What you just did is a micro aggression. I’m American. I was born in America, I live in America, I’m American. Why is this so hard to understand?
No, I'm not being racist, I apologize if it came across that way. I'm a Canadian of Irish descent. There are also Americans of Cambodian and British descent.
Asker1 yThey don’t realize until it is done to them that’s why they make it out like it is no big deal. India and people who are Hispanic come from two different countries.
@Walksbehindtherows you are being racist. Micro aggressions are racist. Do you 100% of the the time tell people you’re “Canadian of Irish descent” or do you just say you’re Canadian? I should have to tell anyone “I’m American of blah blah descent”.
The micro aggression is the act of asking where I’m from. It assumes I’m not from here!!!Everyone has a different perspective. If you think that way, I respect your opinion.
@Walksbehindtherows it’s not my perspective. What you did IS a racist micro aggression!!! It’s not a perspective. Saying “everyone has a different perspective” is just a way for you to not take responsibility for your actions and to continue to be racist. It’s like when people are racist and then when they’re called out on their action the say “I was joking”. The world doesn’t change unless we realize that what we do is insensitive to others. So be adult and just own up to it. Then change it. Don’t do it. Make the world a better place by being more sensitive to others.
@Walksbehindtherows one last thing. Your apology was half assed. Apologizing IF something comes across as… is not an apology. It means “im not sorry that I was being racist, I’m sorry you took it that way” a true apology is being sorry for your actions not for the how others take your actions.
People frequently apologize that others take their racist actions as offensive. Which is to say they are not sorry for their own action and only sorry that others see it as racist.I'm still trying to figure out what part of what I said was racist. Contrary to popular belief, whites are actually the least racist race. Since the US is a cosmopolitan country, everyone in the US actually comes from somewhere. Italian Americans, African Americans, Brazilian Americans, Russian Americans, Korean Americans, etc. If I use myself as an example, people ask me what my origin is because I have red hair and I look different from the majority and I never thought it was racist.
But I understand your sensitivity and I feel really sorry, I really apologize.@Walksbehindtherows I don’t know how to explain this to you so you’ll understand. The racist part is what you’ve been taught to think. For the longest time I did this as well. People don’t realize that asking “where are you from?” Is assuming you are not from here. When we should be assuming they are from here.
Again assuming that white people are the least racist just something that white people say to make themselves feel better. In my lifetime I’d say that 80% of all the racist acts I encounter are white people assuming things about me.
As far as everyone in America coming from somewhere that’s true. However, when asked we say African American, Asian American, Mexican American, whereas when asked white people say they are simply American. They don’t say Irish American, or polish American, or Dutch American, or Italian American, they just say American.
It’s what’s called “forever foreigner”.
Asker1 yThe stuff is just weird that the only excuse on why you can’t tell the difference is because my skin is brown and ok what if my skin was light than what would I be.
Asker1 yLike you can’t define it by the features he asked me how can you tell the difference between Indian and Hispanic and I told him to go in the internet and look it up.
Asker1 y@Dargil that’s a lazy way in determining someone’s race by looking at their skin color clearly people have different features in their face to be able to tell.
Asker1 yAnd some Hispanic people are light skin not all of them are brown. Freddie Mercury wasn’t Hispanic but he is Indian that came to England and he is light skinned.
Here are some other weird micro aggressions that are very racist. Thinking that all Asians look alike. Thinking that that Japanese people eat only raw fish and sushi. Thinking that king fu is Japanese. Thinking that all Asians know the martial arts. Thinking that McDonald’s is all American food. Thinking that Indians from India aren’t Asian. Not understanding that Mexican people have part indigenous peoples culture. Thinking that Africans were the only people that were enslaved in America. That slavery ended with the 13th amendment when Asians were enslaved in the 1940s.
All of these things are micro aggressions.I'm sorry but I don't think this is racism. It's really hard to tell a Chinese person from a Korean or a Vietnamese person. Japanese restaurants always sell fish products, sushi, etc. because Japanese people eat them and it's great. Japanese culture is great. All races should love each other. I think it's wrong to claim that everything is racist.
Actually it’s not hard to tell the difference between Chinese Japanese Korean Vietnamese people. You just have to not look at their eyes. I’m able to tell and more than that it’s best just to ask what their ethnicity is. Asking what their heritage is. And the Japanese do eat a lot of seafood. But what I said is that they only eat seafood and raw fish. Kobe beef isn’t named after Kobe Bryant.
Also racism is the belief that one race is better than another. Racism falls under the umbrella term of bigotry. However because race is involved in this specific type of bigotry it’s more of a racism type of thing.
Asker1 yI'm not going to lie I am from a small town and I wouldn't be able to know the difference because I'm not around eastern Asian people. Like the only Asians I know of are the ones that work in the Chinese restaurant because not really any Asian people live in the southern part of the United States. When people get your race or ethnicity wrong that usually means that they aren't familiar with them. But I think that just looking at someone's skin color is a lazy way of identifying someone's race. Because I know Hispanic people that are fair skin and when someone tells me why they assumed what I am because I am brown is just a dumb excuse.
Why does it bother you to be mistaken for an Indian? This is racism.
Asker1 y@Walksbehindtherows so would you like for me to mistake you as Hispanic? Like for someone to mistake you as something that you're not?
Asker1 y@breanna_nonbinary if I don't know what type of Asian they are I usually to say Asian.
I'm a proud Irish Canadian but I wouldn't mind if someone thought I was Spanish.
Yup. I agree. Try doing this. Whenever you come across someone with an accent try and figure out where they are from. Listening will help you determine their country of origin. I’ve been about to determine different uk accents and even the region of the country by accent alone. Asian people are the same. You can determine their race by the subtle differences by their facial shape, hair, skin tone, eye shape, etc. every race is different and there are even subtle differences in the race itself. All of this will help you to make an educated guess and not just an assumption.
My wife’s father is Mexican but you can see the different types of Mexican in him. He has very subtle indigenous Mayan features and a skin tone that is more golden and less brown.
Asker1 y@Walksbehindtherows well that's you I find it annoying to keep having to correct people on what I am it really isn't that hard to tell the difference between an Indian from India and a Hispanic person and I'm not Mexican I have ancestry from the Caribbean islands.
@Walksbehindtherows it’s not that people mistake you for being something you’re not. It the fact that they ask in a way that suggest you don’t belong. When people ask me where I’m from I tell them I’m from earth. When they ask me where I was born I tell them california. When people ask me my ethnicity I tell them American. When people ask me what’s my heritage I tell them I’m Hmong. All these questions are very different. It’s when people assume things that’s it gets upsetting. It’s when people ask a question in a general way.

What a ridiculous argument. Forget them, my Canadian friend.
@Walksbehindtherows looks like you have compatriot that’s an idiot and racist. By the way, thank you for being understanding and open minded. Empathy is a quality that is rare in wasp men. So I’m sure since you have empathy you will find happiness 🥰

I'm not racist, I'm from Italy
@Maybeyoutoo funny how the only thing you disagree with is the racist part. As if Italians can’t be racist.
Because you brown, there is a trope about that, hope that the link would work for you.

1 yIt's not uncommon. A lot of brown ethnicities look similar to each other. There was a girl in my class I was certain was Punjabi, and she turned out to be Latina, so it's not just you.

1 yGod, it must be awful to be mistaken for an Indian from India.

Asker1 yHow do they look alike Hispanics and Indians?
Both races are not white
Asker1 ySo, your point?
People are divided into two groups: whites and non-whites.
Asker1 ySo because it isn’t white it makes it right to be ignorant? That sounds just dumb I guess we all in the same category as black people too when it is all not the same you don’t understand because it isn’t your race. Until someone else says something that is wrong towards you.
No, I don't think so.
Asker1 yJust stop talking out of your ass because india and South and Central America and the Caribbean are completely different regions compared to the continent of Asia.
Asker1 yLike India is in the continent of Asia. So south and Central America and Caribbean are all of the americas.
Yes that's true. You didn't like what I said? I said Mexicans and Indians are not the same.
Asker1 ySo why are you people dumb and think they both the same person when you see them?
When you see an Irishman and a Russian, don't you think they are of the same race? Same thing
Asker1 yNo I can tell the difference and what you are comparing is something totally different because they are both considered white. Indian and Hispanic are two different ethnic backgrounds they aren’t classified as the same race.
Asker1 yIrish people are usually lighter in skin complexion than Russians and Russians have darker features than Irish people.
Yes, that's true. So how do you physically distinguish between a Hispanic and an Indian?
Asker1 yWhy don’t you look it up?

Asker1 yI understand those two more than I do Indian from India because Hispanic are typically part Native American and Filipinos do have Spanish in their dna.
Don’t argue with him. White people tend to assume they are right all the time and are the least racist when in fact they tend to be the most racist.
Is it normal for Hispanic people to be mistaken as Indian?
